Lionel Messi, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Carlos Alcaraz, Eileen Gu, Christian Eriksen, and Catherine DeBrunner were individual winners from Olympic and Paralympic sports at the 2023 Laureus World Sports Awards in Paris last night. The annual awards honored the 'best athletes of 2022' as well as the inspirational and unifying power of sport.

Who can forget Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe dressed as video game character 'Super Mario' to help introduce the Tokyo 2020 preview at the Rio 2016 Closing Ceremonies? The indelible image is a classic. Beyond that, he was noted as a 'valiant supporter and a dear friend of the Olympic Movement' from the International Olympic Committee.

Simone Biles and Megan Rapinoe join Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay), Michael Jordan, Pat Summit, Bill Russell, Jerry West, Dan Gable, and Babe Didrikson Zaharias as Team USA Olympic stars who have each been honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for “especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors”.

Olympic stars Michael Phelps, Michelle Kwan, Mia Hamm, Lindsey Vonn, Gretchen Fraser, Natalie Coughlin, Roger Kingdom, Pat Summit (athlete and coach), and the Montreal 1976 Women’s 4x100 Freestyle Relay Team are set to be inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall Of Fame on June 24 as the Class Of 2022. Paralympic stars Muffy Davis, David Kiley, Trischa Zorn-Hudson, and the Salt Lake 2002 Sled Hockey Team, and ‘special contributor’ Billie Jean King will join them as well.
