"This, this thing between us has been going on for a while and I know we never actually talked about it. We didn’t need to. But uh… lately I feel like I do. Need to, that is,” Bruce paused in his speech. He’d already taken off his glasses and was fiddling with them. A nervous tick, Loki knew, barely registering the thought over the roaring in his ears.
Was this the moment he had been dreading since whatever this thing with Bruce began? Was the quiet certainty ticking away in the back of his mind finally going to be put at rest, however much he dreaded it? Loki took in a deep breath, readying himself to cut Bruce off, to spare him from speaking the words. Pathetic. Even now, as he was going to be rejected once again, Loki felt the need to protect the man from himself. He could do nothing else. Because…because he -
"What I mean, what I want to say is - I love you," Bruce said the last so quickly Loki almost did not register it. His mind blanked.
Was that what this feeling was? This hope and warmth blooming in his chest? That his own unnamed feelings would be reciprocated, not shunted into the back of his mind to try to save him from the sting of rejection and falseness (not that he had ever succeeded).
It was all he could say, still processing Bruce’s words. (Did he love Bruce?)
Bruce ducked his head, slipping his glasses back on as a barrier against the world (against him and no, that would just not do).
"It’s fine if you don’t want - can’t say it yet, I just… I just wanted you to know-"
A rush of affection filled him. Yes, of course he did, he had just not seen it til now. Too much of a coward to properly define what he was feeling (too wary of being hurt once more).
"Yes," Loki said, smile blooming across his face. It was his moment to flummox Bruce.
"Er, just to be clear, yes what?" The shy look on Bruce’s face only made the warmth in Loki’s chest grow, pulsing with his racing heart.
"Yes, of course I feel the same way."
Bruce returned his smile, looking away.
"Well, how about that," he murmured. He glanced back at Loki, only to startle at finding him so close. Loki’s own smile widened.
"I do not know about you," Loki began, voice low and throaty (and smug at Bruce’s shiver in response to it), “but I think this requires some celebration.”
He whisked them away before Bruce could reply.
