What a genius idea! Now Gangle can return to what she used to do; posting her art online and reading fanfiction!

Hello!! As stated before I am a minor, and I am also a big fan of TADC, Kirby, Pokémon, all that good stuff. I have been writing for many years, I even have a few fanfics of my own! “A…goose said that?”

[Gangle tilted her head, expression never changing.]

“I, um…didn’t think Caine would make an NPC say one of us would abstract…”

[She rubbed the side of her mask with unease, an artificial tear dropping. Hearing that Caine had his own deadly predictions was unnerving.]

[At the sound of Zooble’s voice, she immediately perked up, quick to walk over with a curious look on her face.]

“Oh..? What is it?”

“…”

[She turned away, fidgeting with her mask.]

“You guys…really like to ask personal questions, huh?”

Yo do you like space. Like astronomy stuff

“I think it’s really cool..! Planets are fun to draw, and so are starry nights…but, um, I don’t know much about space itself.”

“Well…I expected worse.”

“…I’m j-just gonna go back and block the door.”

[Gangle took the plush, tilting her head at it.]

“Aw, it’s kind of cute though..! T-thank you.”

“Hopefully there’s not one of me…probably not, that would be really difficult to do.”

[Gangle smiled at anon, holding the gifts close to herself. At least some of these people were kind!]

“And I hope you, um, are happy too..!”

[Gangle took the plush, tilting her head at it.]

“Aw, it’s kind of cute though..! T-thank you.”

[She tried not to laugh. Really, she did, but she couldn’t help it. It’s what Jax deserved, after all!]

“Hehehehe! You should give that to him, that would be funny…b-but don’t tell him I gave you the idea-!”

[Gangle wandered over, the sound of her footsteps inaudible. She held onto her notebook with a firm grip, using her free ribbon to tap Kinger and alert him to hopefully avoid startling him for the 50th time.]

“Hey, Kinger. I um…I drew you in my notebook, if you would like to see it!”

[She held it up for him to grab, a shaky smile lingering as always. Hopefully he liked it! She hadn’t talked to the chess piece much, so she was a little nervous to hear what he would say- even if it would probably be some nonsense, judging from the little she did know.]

[On the page there were a few different drawings; one of just Kinger, one with him and a bunch of butterflies in a flower field, one with him and Ragatha, and a few other smaller doodles- the only notable one being a scratched out attempt at drawing him on a chess board.]

“I- I don’t know much about butterflies, so I just drew a bunch of monarchs…maybe that’s sorta fitting? I hope you like it.”

[The poor chess piece's shoulders still tensed up as he felt the tap, at least this time he didn't scream. He turned around and his bottom eyelids lifted excitedly, being able to recognise her]

Hi Gangle! You what for me?

[He asked while doing the royal wave to her. He leaned over to look at what she's holding then paused. Shaky hands reached out to take the notebook away from her ribbon hands. Suddenly he came to his senses that Gangle had drawn him. Using his free hand, he attempted to make a shadow to cover his eyes. Of course with artificial lighting he couldn't quite get the effect.]

[Kinger's right eye attempted to space out but he squinted them, forcing himself to keep focus, despite how much it ached in his head. He finally ended up holding it with both hands, trembling at the detailed drawings and even the depiction of the butterflies. He ran a finger through the pages containing the drawings.]

Wow.. Gangle this is great. I.. wow.

[Words weren't his forte. His blue eyes scanned over the notebook multiple times. Lifting his head, he stared her in the eyes, a mixture of gratefulness and confusion.]

Thank you. Can I.. keep? It?

[He questioned her, unsure if he could get the art from her or if she was far too shy to give it to her. Kinger's pupils remained on the monarch butterflies..]

Gangle.. do you know that monarch butterflies represent resilience and the soul’s journey?

It reminds me of.. you, in a way.

[With the amount of times the poor girl had her comedy mask broken, of course she was resilient.]

[It’s safe to say the ‘hesitation’ increased her anxiety a bit, tapping her ribbon arms together as she waited for any verbal response once Kinger realized what was going on. Her big ‘empty’ eyes stared up at him, observing his reaction closely. Please like it please like it please like it…]

[Hearing his voice change to a softer one caught her off guard, seeming a little less scared at the quiet tone.]

“Y-you like it..?”

[Gangle smiled, standing up a little taller.]

“Of course you can keep it..! I made it for you. A-and I’d be happy to draw more for you in the future!- um, if you want.”

[She tilted her head at the fact. She didn’t know much about butterflies at all, much less their meanings. The ‘monarch’ butterfly meaning resilience made sense, she supposed. They’re very bright and inspirational and, well, ‘monarchs’…wait, what was that about her?]

“Huh-? Oh, n-no, I’m not really a resilient person. I-I mean, Jax pushes me around everyday so easily and I n-never fight back or anything so…I think you m-mean Pomni or Ragatha, they’re really resilient.”

[She gave a weak smile, wiping a comically large tear off her mask. She knew she was pretty weak willed, it’s why she listened to everything Jax said, isn’t it? But that’s okay! Not everyone can be strong…]

“But, um, I’m really happy you like my drawings!”

[The dazed King nodded his head towards her. There was something so meaningful to him seeing these little art pieces of himself, even the scribbled one meant plenty. It was hard to express himself when his mind was at sea.]

[He took a moment to try and get himself together again. It was difficult to tell her how hypnotic the art style was.]

GANGLE

[He shouted out of the blue, almost excited to see her, even if she was just standing there.]

I need to go to my fortress..

[Added the muddled man, as he reached to take her hand, strolling down with the notebook in his other hand to the main stage. At some point he dropped the notebook and apologised.]

[Upon arrival he basically jumped in, relief filling his body. Curling up, he held the item delicately. Now he could focus a little better.]

Oh.. about earlier. I think you're resilient.

[The chess piece began speaking then paused. It wasn't pure darkness for him to speak more freely but.. it was enough for the moment.]

Pomni is intelligent while Ragatha is emphatic but she always.. beats herself up. You, on the other hand..

[Kinger wanted to scoot closer to her but faltered. He didn’t think she was much of a physical affection type.]

You're emotional and that's okay. That means you are resilient. Have you ever thought that maybe.. the rudeness of people is just their own insecurities coming out?

[His eyes wandered away from her to the drawings. If he could smile, he would.. but the lack of mouth was evident enough that he couldn't even if he really wanted to.]

Yes I enjoy your drawings Gangle.. I'm sorry if I've forgotten if you've shown me before I'm.. not good with memories.

“EEK!”

[She flinched at the yelling, covering her eyes for just a moment before returning to normal. It wasn’t unusual for Kinger to randomly yell, but she still never got used to it…]

“Y-your fortress..? Why- oh-!”

[Gangle wasn’t hard to catch off guard, especially if Jax wasn’t around to make her worried. She quickly got over it though, following closely behind Kinger, reassuring him that dropping the notebook was fine- it wasn’t fragile. During the walk she wasn’t paying much attention, more-so thinking about Kinger’s slightly different behavior for that moment. It was nice…she should definitely draw for him more! Not that anything was wrong with this Kinger, they’re both nice to have around.]

[She sat down a few feet away from Kinger, looking around at the pillow fort. In the past she’d had the funny idea that Kinger was hiding some sort of secret lair in here since she never had gone in, but this made a lot more sense. A calm, quiet place to be alone in the chaos of the circus…she didn’t know such a place existed.]

[Once Kinger began speaking again, she listened intently, tilting her head up at him and taking mental notes of every word, idly wiping away A tear or two. He seemed so much more aware, more…intelligent? She wasn’t sure how to describe it, it was fascinating- almost like seeing an entirely new person.]

“I…I suppose. But isn’t being emotional also a bad thing..? I’m unable t-to handle the things that happen, and my mask breaks, then I’m like…this everyday.”

[She gestured to her natural tragedy mask, wiping away two more tears that seemed to constantly regenerate.]

[He was definitely much more sane in the dark. It stabilised him.. reminding him of the good memories he held dear. Despite his chubby fingers, he managed to take the pages containing himself off the notebook without ripping any of the rest. He held the artwork happily but realized what he had done suddenly]

Oh stars, I didn't even ask, I'm sorry Gangle..

[Obviously, the purple robed was quick to apologize. He didn't know why for certain he did the things he did. Handing the notebook back, he leaned against the pillowed wall, listening to the ribbon girl's sorrows attentively.]

It isn't exactly your fault you're trapped in a form like this. You can't control it.

[The oldest replied, glancing at her, a weak chuckle leaving his non-existent mouth as he stared at himself, then back at her with those blue eyes. They looked much more stable, almost like there was never haze in his pupils]

I mean, I'm a chess piece. So, no, I don't believe that it's your fault for anything.. or that you're weak, because you aren't.

[It was strange to hear a speech as strong minded and heartfelt from Kinger. Usually he was well.. respectfully, a total nutcase. Was it that he felt comfortable in smaller areas or smaller groups? The most logical being that it's a defense mechanism]

[It won't be known though. Not like the fake royalty would magically get well or the masked one tell everyone about his strange behaviour.]

Er.. would you like to draw? I mean.. I'm not much of an artist..

“I-it’s okay, I wanted you to keep it.”

[Gangle gave a nod, assuring him that he was fine once again. It was hard to express without her comedy mask, but how much Kinger seemed to like and appreciate her art made her very happy. Others liking her art always filled her with joy, it was a big part of her so she held it close. Of course, the only signs of this were her tears regenerating a bit slower and her ever-so-slightly straighter posture.]

[A few theories about the Kings sudden…lucidity did fill her mind. Maybe the craziness was a partial act to keep himself sane? If so it was certainly effective, considering how long he’d been here…or maybe all of the noise of the circus made him unable to think clearly- it was a lot at times. However, for the most part she was too fixated on his words to connect any real dots.]

“Th-thank you…”

[She perked up a bit at the mention of drawing, quickly grabbing her notebook.]

“That would be nice..! And d-don’t worry, I like seeing what people make, even if they don’t have much experience.”

[Gangle tore out a blank page from her notebook and grabbed an extra pencil from its spiral, offering them to Kinger. She was really curious what the chess piece wanted to draw…art’s an expression of the mind and self, things she apparently didn’t know much about regarding Kinger. This would be fun!]

[It is truly an incredible achievement to have Kinger be somewhat aware of his surroundings. He wasn't loud like he usually is, neither was he distracted, it almost seemed like a miracle! For sure, a miracle! Definitely rough around the edges.. nonetheless in comparison to his typical personality, he was doing so much better]

[He too felt cheery with how things were going. It wasn't common for him to interact with the crew one-on-one. Usually something happened with Kinger being paired up with another who didn't want to be with him. He didn't mind all that much, at the end of the day. Everyone knows he's not doing well mentally. They could throw in a rude comment or two but they never really hurt him.]

Haha.. drawing has never been a talent of mine- I mean, computer science does require you to be creative but not in the exact way that you are Gangle!

[Kinger shared about his life a little to the masked. He nodded his head in appreciation when the paper and pencil were given to him. It proved rather difficult to actually draw without elbows.. he was astonished how the other made of ribbons could be capable of doing such details in her art. His art of a moth ended up worse than a kindergartener's.]

Goodness, this is so bad! Look at this!

[The calmed manic laughed as he pointed at his piece, trying to understand how he messed up that badly.]

“Computer science..?”

[She echoed, glancing back at Kinger for a moment.]

“Hehe, I c-can see it.”

[She smiled, focusing on her drawing once more. Truthfully they’d look a lot better if she had a more ‘normal’ body, but in her years here she learned to make the ribbons work. Sometimes she still ended up accidentally drawing a line through her art when putting too much pressure though…]

[Gangle stayed focused on her drawing the entire time. It was of her and Zooble in a small cafe. The characters clearly had more attention to detail than the background, since it was just a small doodle, but even then it all looked great. If there’s one thing she liked about herself, it was her artistic skill.]

[She looked up at the drawing, a short, quiet laugh being all that escaped. Even if it wasn’t drawn very well, she still liked to see it! Everyone’s art had meaning, it was a piece of themselves, and that’s wonderful. Stick figures or the Mona Lisa, it’s human. A nice way to remind herself of that in this digital world.]

“H-here, I can show you how I draw bugs!”

[Gangle shifted around a bit so Kinger could see her notebook as she was drawing, flipping to a new page and sketching out moths in multiple different poses, though some ended up looking a little more like butterflies.]

“I don’t really…r-remember what moths look like, exactly, but this is probably close- right?”

[The King would nod his head along upon her questioning tone. He had studied Computer Science, the very same subject that doomed him to this eternal digital hell. He wasn't even sure if he was trapped or if he was dead in reality and this was the place that captured his soul.]

[Those thoughts were too complicated for him to continue trying to understand. His misplaced eyes focused on Gangle's wrist made of silk drawing a few attempts at a moth. He sort of nodded along, not judging that the insect looked wrong. Momentarily he reached out to tap at one of the sketches.]

This one.. it looks like the Attacus atlas..

[He calmly provided, almost expecting for the masked faced to understand what that was. His own hands started to draw the specified moth, inspired by the one that she had drawn on a whim]

Oh uhm. Sorry, I forgot that.. you probably wouldn't understand. Attacus atlas is a moth that looks like a butterfly.

[Shaky hands continued doodling, while also trying to make it more detailed. It's body was fuzzy yet their wings were wide and pretty like a butterfly's]

It's often just called the Atlas moth.. they're the largest moth in the world..

[Kinger was muttering to himself at this point. His eyes not meeting Gangle's. He was simply only showing her his own interpretation]

[She turned back to Kinger, sitting up to focus more on him than her sketchbook. Bugs weren’t something she was super interested in back in reality- honestly they were just really scary, but there were a few that weren’t so bad! Butterflies, moths, bees, and…spiders. Most people hated spiders, but she appreciated them killing the more gross bugs and usually keeping their distance.]

“That sounds pretty…”

[She leaned closer to his paper, both to see what he was drawing and hear him through the mumbling. While the drawing wasn’t very ‘clean,’ she was able to tell the details Kinger was trying to draw, memorizing them so she could replicate it later. Kinger would like that, right?]

“D-do you have a favorite bug..?”

[Surely the king of bugs had a favorite. He knew so much about them all- so which one did he see as the best? That got her curious! Whatever he thought somehow surpassed all the others he was bound to have a good reason for.]

[…This still felt bizarre to Gangle, though; having a calm, coherent chat with Kinger. She’d been here a while, she felt- and yet somehow she always missed this side of him.]

[Kinger was so immersed in his own drawing that when Gangle asked him about his favourite bug, he got surprised. Quickly he snapped out of his initial shock. This reaction was a whole lot different compared to the predictable behaviour of the purple robed. No scream or telling the person they scared him.. just acknowledging what has happened without further comments.] Oh.. uhm. I don’t actually have a favourite. In fact I really hated bugs for a while.. [He started, glancing at his hand as he pictured a centipede or a spider crawling at his palm. If it was years back, he would of screamed in absolute terror, trying to get it off.. but now it seemed like second nature to him.. it was peaceful, it was.. Queenie’s hobby. An unexplainable emotion filled his blue eyes, the type nobody in the circus had seen before on his face.. or therefore lack of?] ..It was my wife who got me to like them. She.. abstracted way before your time. I don’t.. remember her name but here she was called Queenie.. to match me. [The eyes of the royal filled with tears but he wiped them away, taking the moment to begin a new sketch, drawing what appeared to be a female and male beetle.] Queenie always claimed to not have a favourite.. though I think her favourites were beetles. She also drew a lot like you, she drew us as beetles. I on the other hand.. feel less threatened by butterflies. [He chuckled quietly, managing to do something similar to what his wife had done years ago. Out of the blue Kinger placed a hand on Gangle’s ribbon hand, too afraid to place it anywhere else due to her less-than-ideal flimsy body. A fatherly look in his eye.] With good memories Gangle, you can do anything. Don’t forget the people who cherish and care about you..

[Gangle sat up, listening attentively. Every word was fascinating- she was learning so much about someone she’d believed was simply crazy. After so many years being stuck with someone you’d think you know them but…there’s so much more here.]

[She stayed quiet, scared to interrupt his train of thought. He had a wife in the circus..? Gangle always assumed everyone who arrived here were strangers, but to have someone so close to you before this digital prison, then having to watch them lose their mind…she couldn’t imagine it. Kinger must’ve seen everything in his time here. How has he lasted this long? She felt bad seeing him cry, she didn’t mean to bring up memories but…at least it seems like they were happy ones.]

[However he’d remained after all this time, she was glad to have him here now. After today she felt like she had another person she could trust- another genuine, kind, person.]

“I…”

[She wiped a tear off her mask at his final sentence, smiling up at him.]

“You- you know, I think your wife would be happy and proud to know you’re still…here after all this time. H-helping people and being so nice…”

[She laughed softly, glancing to the side.]

“A-And it sounds to me like you have a favorite too, even if you don’t think so.”

[Kinger feeling ‘less threatened’ by butterflies technically means he thinks a little higher of them than other bugs, right? She’d keep that in mind.]

“Thank you for, um, telling me all of this.”

[Kinger couldn’t blame her for assuming he was a hoo-ha, as Jax liked to say. It was less insulting than being told he never was sane. These blue eyes have seen enough traumas to be let off the hook for his unreasonable behaviours. He wished he could improve but.. there’s nothing he could do in reality. He wasn’t sure if it was his fault entirely though to a certain degree maybe there’s truth in that.] [Gangle’s words were meaningful to him, as he closed his eyes, imagining that Queenie would be happy to see how far he has come. She would definitely be upset that he’s still.. stuck in this circus but.. he knows she wouldn’t be mad at him. That woman was far too kind-hearted, even for him. Up to this day he doesn’t believe he deserved her.. how he misses her, would she ever know?] Thank you Gangle for listening. I hope she’s happy.. where ever she may be. I do my best to be.. better, to do better.. even if my absent mind can be.. a struggle. [He sighed while looking at the dim atmosphere of the pillow fortress. This was the place Queenie last resided. with him. She didn’t question how childish it was to make a fortress out of pillows, in fact she found it.. cute. For someone who’s struggled to fit in a lot, she made him feel.. basically equal with everyone.] [Turning his head towards the teary-eyed girl, he raised a hand and gently pat her on the mask, which was supposed to be her head but.. it wasn’t really wide enough to actually be considered a head. Was that rude to think about?] Butterflies? I suppose so.. though they also have creepy factors to them.. some of them are opportunistic blood drinkers. Isn’t it odd?

“I-I think you’re doing great, if it means anything.”

[She was trying to be a little positive and reassuring, even if it wasn’t her specialty. It was the least she could do, right? Kinger’s being so nice, and one of the first sane things he said to her was that she was ‘resilient’, a huge compliment in her mind. She’d believed the exact opposite but…maybe she was wrong?]

[The pillow fort felt really nice, honestly. She felt a lot more relaxed in this darkness and the only other sound to occupy it being Kinger. Even when he was being ‘crazy’ he was one of the circus members she liked more. Aside from the sudden reactions or loud yelling, he never really did anything that bothered her. Now though..? Well, at the least she’d probably go out of her way to talk to him more.]

“Um- they can do that..? I thought they couldn’t bite that hard.”

[Gangle didn’t outwardly react very much to physical affection, but it did seem to calm her down a little. The regeneration of her tears slowed down, and she stopped fidgeting with her ribbons as much.]

[…Though the ‘fun fact’ about butterflies definitely gave her a new fear.]

[It was not like they chose the bodies they were gifted with in the digital circus. Gangle cried often because her comedy mask gets broken. If your emotions rely on a mask, of course you would think you aren’t resilient. Especially a mask made out of porcelain, how is that fair to the girl? It just isn’t. Not that things were majorly fair in this crazy place but they couldn’t really complain. They were durable enough for it, right?] Butterflies can’t actually bite as they lack the teeth or stingers necessary to break skin. The ones who drink blood usually do from pre-existing wounds when needing nutrients. Typically, they don’t do it and humans are safe from such situation. [Kinger ended up explaining, taking the time to calm the ribbon-made from a spiral of worry about blood-drinking butterflies. It was a strange feature he must agree, though they didn’t really attack humans for it. If anything, they would lick their sweat and fly away.] Although an insect that CAN drink human blood is the Calyptra Thalictra moth! Here I can illustrate it for you.. the moth, I mean! [He excitedly added on to his sentence whilst beginning to sketch the creature on his paper. Maybe he wasn’t all that sane after all, being interested in such a nightmare inducing moth didn’t seem normal for social standards. Who are they kidding though, it’s not like they had any stability in this circus.]

[It wasn’t like Gangle was one to judge. Everyone had their own interests, including her, and honestly all of these strange things about bugs were really fascinating! She was kinda surprised Kinger remembered so much about them…unless Caine was able to give them facts from the outside world? She doubted it. This was very impressive!]

“Wha-..? Butterflies can’t have teeth to bite, but moths can? I thought they were almost the same…a-aside from moths being attracted to light, I guess.”

[Gangle observed the specific details Kinger was trying to make out with his drawing, thinking of ways it could’ve looked in real life. Realism was far from her main art style, but she could try something similar to it to draw these again! She’d like to have a clear image of all these bugs Kinger liked so much…and maybe give him one too for when his memory isn’t so clear.]

[Kinger remembered these facts at random. Sometimes he forgot his own circus name, it was difficult to manage through this way of living. Maybe it was a coping mechanism from when his.. wife abstracted; somewhere deep in his subconscious, he connected that bugs were familiarity and familiarity was comfort.] [Gangle was a far better artist than he was, even with his attempt at realism he didn’t understand the study of art. Art needed to come from the soul, which drawing these creatures was but it also needs the creativity, the want to make, to draw. To be an artist is something great, even if it’s super overlooked.] Ehh, no, they are pretty similar to each other. Moths don’t have teeth either only some moths have a proboscis and feed on nectar like butterflies. [Just like the honeybees too. Life is full of wonderous really.. it’s such a shame they haven’t experienced these amazing, delightful things in a long while. Kinger especially, he’s been here for years.. he didn’t miss the expectations life weighted on him but.. he wasn’t unhappy. He doesn’t think he was unhappy.] Others have vestigial mouths, I forgot to add. But- enough of me, right? You haven’t.. talked at all, Gangle. [He mentioned, giving her a look of sincerity as he finally put down the sheet of paper filled with the dazzling designs of insects.]

“Oh- um…”

[She looked down and began fidgeting with her ribbon hands again, not expecting to have the focus on her. She was happy just listening to all of these strange facts, even if she’d probably never be fond of bugs herself. Talking wasn’t a strength of hers, far from it.]

“I just…don’t have much to say, t-that’s all.”

[She grabbed her sketchbook again and started flipping through the pages, keeping it close enough to be hard to see until she got to the one she wanted.]

“N-not anything to say, really, aside from my drawings…um, here’s the page where I tried to draw some horses for Ragatha. They’re not that bad, b-but I like drawing people more…also I didn’t have a reference.”

[Gangle looked around at the pillow fort. Maybe she could ask Kinger some questions she was curious about? He’d been here the longest, and was somehow the most mysterious of them all. And why was he sane right now? Ah…she didn’t want to ask too many questions though.]

[Kinger scooted closer to her to look at the drawings. Mostly because he was the tallest member in the circus and it was awkward having to lean over all the time to look at his fellow circus crew. He blinked at the drawings, smiling without an actual mouth at the horses. Yeah they weren't perfect, so what? Not everything can be perfect.]

I think I'd like to have one of your horses as one of my knights!

[That was perhaps one of the highest compliments anyone can get from a King chess piece.. then again, Kinger did have some obvious favourites in their digital nightmare, even if it was less strongly known or even shown. He does give Gangle a loyal wave, that matters for something, doesn't it?]

[He was quite the puzzle for everyone, it was at randomly for the empty-headed Kinger to become aware of his surroundings.. sane. It wasn't a word you connect with the chess piece often, tragic yes but the moments where he does own a light of rationality, it's all so worth it. He isn't as mad as Jax makes him out to be, he was just.. with the lack of a better word, broken.]

[His eyes grew heavy the more he stared and listened to Gangle's little ramblings. It was calming, putting him in a time better than the current. He could live with this as crazy as it sounded to everyone else. Kinger's head leaned backwards on the pillows and he dozed off even if he didn't need to sleep technically.]

“Knights..? Chess piece knights…I could work with that!”

[Gangle flipped to a new page, tapping her eraser against it as she thought out loud a few ideas for a knight that could fit in this place. Maybe with a cloak of some sort? No, that wouldn’t fit a knight very well. It could be different from the usual chess piece design, having similar patterns to one of the horses, like Kinger said! Some fictional knights had capes, if she remembered right (which was very up for debate), so something with that…]

[For a while she got to work, sketching a few different versions- most of which got scratched out- and voicing her thoughts as she made each design. Eventually she landed on one she liked: the chess piece itself had a white stripe to the nose with a few white spots on its body, similar to an earlier horse. It also had a removable helmet with an attached cape. They were made to be a bit small, saving her from overcomplicating the design.]

“I…I think this one is good! What do you thi-“

[She turned around, only then noticing Kinger had fallen asleep. She just smiled, setting the sketchbook to the side to show Kinger later. It was probably almost “night” anyway, so it was about time she left.]

[…Though outside, she could hear Jax messing with Ragatha. Now that she thought about it, Jax never touched the pillow fort, did he? Made sense, not like he’d get much of a reaction from Kinger. Maybe she could just stay in here a few hours until he went to his room…Kinger wouldn’t mind, right?]

[She adjusted to lay down on the other side of the pillow fort, making sure not to knock over any pillows or block the exit. It didn’t take long for her to fall asleep with the relative quiet and darkness making it easier.]

[She’d consider this a good day.]

[Zooble exclaiming his name got him out of his daydreams, catching him off guard thus causing him to jolt and scream] AUAHH, ZOOBLE! [He said, letting out a strange, dazed laugh. Kinger rubbed at his chess head, trying to remember where he had last seen Gangle. Was it in her room? The main stage? Which adventure were they even talking about?] I think… [The one dressed in purple began, raising a finger then absolutely losing track of their own thought. Well, it wouldn’t make sense to search for her, right? That would be hard to do, how could Kinger help in this scenario?] Ah, I can help find Gangle! [Then he, like a coo-coo, screamed her name whilst flaring his hands around @gangledraws ]

“EEK-“

[Even from a distance she managed to be startled, the sound of something shattering following her shriek. She sighed and ignored the happy mask on the floor- it’d been so fragile lately it was practically useless- and walked over to the screaming chess piece.]

[It didn’t take long for her to emerge from behind a blue wall, quietly walking over.]

“I’m…here Kinger, y-you can stop shouting. What did you need..?”

[She rubbed the side of her mask, only mildly bothered by the loud sound. She was used to it by now. Once she registered who was in front of her, she finally perked up a little.]

“Oh! Hey, Zooble..!”

[She gave them a wave and a small smile.]

[The chess piece waited expectedly, happy to see his plan had worked after all. He gave the royal wave to Gangle, as his lower eye spaced out a bit before coming back to frame]

GANGLE, there you are! Zooble was searching for you!

[He shouted her name once more but unlike the previous moment didn't scream it out. He held back, for everyone's sakes. Kinger held his hands together, happy to see them united, almost like they were separated for ages, causing him to wipe an invisible tear. Of course that wasn't true, only part of the King's nonsense.]

[Then just like that, he was out of mind, disappearing mentally on the spot. He did his part, at least he believed so? @orangepeeeeeelll ]

[my ears rang from kinger’s shouting. i should’ve asked someone else. as i saw gangle in the distance, relief washed over me.]

oh hey gangle.

[i waved at them, my antenna twitching slightly, picking up the happy mask pieces that had broken, saints we need caine again.]

uh.. why weren’t you with the others? [ @gangledraws ]

[Gangle paid Kinger’s antics no mind, glancing at him for only a moment with no surprise seeing him look “lost” again.]

“I was just drawing, nothing i-interesting.”

[She’d abandoned her sketchbook a bit ago in favor of sitting around, no ideas striking her at the moment, but it was mostly true. Not like she’d done much since then.]

“Um…did you need me for something..?”

“T-there’s plushes of us-?”

[Gangle took the plush, tilting her head at it.]

“Aw, it’s kind of cute though..! T-thank you.”

Hi Gangle! Do you want some Stupid Sauce™?

*Dumps a bucket-load of Stupid Sauce™ all over Gangle*

“Um…no, n-not really, not after seeing what happened to Ragath- WAIT-“

[The weight of just the sauce alone was enough to crush the ribbon girl to the ground, a few seconds passing before she finally got up. With a frog blink and an eye twitch, she eventually spoke:]

“Wha..? HahahaHA. Ahh nnope. Byyeee.”

[She waved the person off and turned away, only walking a few feet before falling back to the ground and grumbling, not bothering to get up.]

(Unfortunately I don’t believe stupid sauce would have the same “good” affect on Gangle that it has on the others.)

[Gangle wandered over, the sound of her footsteps inaudible. She held onto her notebook with a firm grip, using her free ribbon to tap Kinger and alert him to hopefully avoid startling him for the 50th time.]

“Hey, Kinger. I um…I drew you in my notebook, if you would like to see it!”

[She held it up for him to grab, a shaky smile lingering as always. Hopefully he liked it! She hadn’t talked to the chess piece much, so she was a little nervous to hear what he would say- even if it would probably be some nonsense, judging from the little she did know.]

[On the page there were a few different drawings; one of just Kinger, one with him and a bunch of butterflies in a flower field, one with him and Ragatha, and a few other smaller doodles- the only notable one being a scratched out attempt at drawing him on a chess board.]

“I- I don’t know much about butterflies, so I just drew a bunch of monarchs…maybe that’s sorta fitting? I hope you like it.”

[The poor chess piece's shoulders still tensed up as he felt the tap, at least this time he didn't scream. He turned around and his bottom eyelids lifted excitedly, being able to recognise her]

Hi Gangle! You what for me?

[He asked while doing the royal wave to her. He leaned over to look at what she's holding then paused. Shaky hands reached out to take the notebook away from her ribbon hands. Suddenly he came to his senses that Gangle had drawn him. Using his free hand, he attempted to make a shadow to cover his eyes. Of course with artificial lighting he couldn't quite get the effect.]

[Kinger's right eye attempted to space out but he squinted them, forcing himself to keep focus, despite how much it ached in his head. He finally ended up holding it with both hands, trembling at the detailed drawings and even the depiction of the butterflies. He ran a finger through the pages containing the drawings.]

Wow.. Gangle this is great. I.. wow.

[Words weren't his forte. His blue eyes scanned over the notebook multiple times. Lifting his head, he stared her in the eyes, a mixture of gratefulness and confusion.]

Thank you. Can I.. keep? It?

[He questioned her, unsure if he could get the art from her or if she was far too shy to give it to her. Kinger's pupils remained on the monarch butterflies..]

Gangle.. do you know that monarch butterflies represent resilience and the soul’s journey?

It reminds me of.. you, in a way.

[With the amount of times the poor girl had her comedy mask broken, of course she was resilient.]

[It’s safe to say the ‘hesitation’ increased her anxiety a bit, tapping her ribbon arms together as she waited for any verbal response once Kinger realized what was going on. Her big ‘empty’ eyes stared up at him, observing his reaction closely. Please like it please like it please like it…]

[Hearing his voice change to a softer one caught her off guard, seeming a little less scared at the quiet tone.]

“Y-you like it..?”

[Gangle smiled, standing up a little taller.]

“Of course you can keep it..! I made it for you. A-and I’d be happy to draw more for you in the future!- um, if you want.”

[She tilted her head at the fact. She didn’t know much about butterflies at all, much less their meanings. The ‘monarch’ butterfly meaning resilience made sense, she supposed. They’re very bright and inspirational and, well, ‘monarchs’…wait, what was that about her?]

“Huh-? Oh, n-no, I’m not really a resilient person. I-I mean, Jax pushes me around everyday so easily and I n-never fight back or anything so…I think you m-mean Pomni or Ragatha, they’re really resilient.”

[She gave a weak smile, wiping a comically large tear off her mask. She knew she was pretty weak willed, it’s why she listened to everything Jax said, isn’t it? But that’s okay! Not everyone can be strong…]

“But, um, I’m really happy you like my drawings!”

[The dazed King nodded his head towards her. There was something so meaningful to him seeing these little art pieces of himself, even the scribbled one meant plenty. It was hard to express himself when his mind was at sea.]

[He took a moment to try and get himself together again. It was difficult to tell her how hypnotic the art style was.]

GANGLE

[He shouted out of the blue, almost excited to see her, even if she was just standing there.]

I need to go to my fortress..

[Added the muddled man, as he reached to take her hand, strolling down with the notebook in his other hand to the main stage. At some point he dropped the notebook and apologised.]

[Upon arrival he basically jumped in, relief filling his body. Curling up, he held the item delicately. Now he could focus a little better.]

Oh.. about earlier. I think you're resilient.

[The chess piece began speaking then paused. It wasn't pure darkness for him to speak more freely but.. it was enough for the moment.]

Pomni is intelligent while Ragatha is emphatic but she always.. beats herself up. You, on the other hand..

[Kinger wanted to scoot closer to her but faltered. He didn’t think she was much of a physical affection type.]

You're emotional and that's okay. That means you are resilient. Have you ever thought that maybe.. the rudeness of people is just their own insecurities coming out?

[His eyes wandered away from her to the drawings. If he could smile, he would.. but the lack of mouth was evident enough that he couldn't even if he really wanted to.]

Yes I enjoy your drawings Gangle.. I'm sorry if I've forgotten if you've shown me before I'm.. not good with memories.

“EEK!”

[She flinched at the yelling, covering her eyes for just a moment before returning to normal. It wasn’t unusual for Kinger to randomly yell, but she still never got used to it…]

“Y-your fortress..? Why- oh-!”

[Gangle wasn’t hard to catch off guard, especially if Jax wasn’t around to make her worried. She quickly got over it though, following closely behind Kinger, reassuring him that dropping the notebook was fine- it wasn’t fragile. During the walk she wasn’t paying much attention, more-so thinking about Kinger’s slightly different behavior for that moment. It was nice…she should definitely draw for him more! Not that anything was wrong with this Kinger, they’re both nice to have around.]

[She sat down a few feet away from Kinger, looking around at the pillow fort. In the past she’d had the funny idea that Kinger was hiding some sort of secret lair in here since she never had gone in, but this made a lot more sense. A calm, quiet place to be alone in the chaos of the circus…she didn’t know such a place existed.]

[Once Kinger began speaking again, she listened intently, tilting her head up at him and taking mental notes of every word, idly wiping away A tear or two. He seemed so much more aware, more…intelligent? She wasn’t sure how to describe it, it was fascinating- almost like seeing an entirely new person.]

“I…I suppose. But isn’t being emotional also a bad thing..? I’m unable t-to handle the things that happen, and my mask breaks, then I’m like…this everyday.”

[She gestured to her natural tragedy mask, wiping away two more tears that seemed to constantly regenerate.]

[He was definitely much more sane in the dark. It stabilised him.. reminding him of the good memories he held dear. Despite his chubby fingers, he managed to take the pages containing himself off the notebook without ripping any of the rest. He held the artwork happily but realized what he had done suddenly]

Oh stars, I didn't even ask, I'm sorry Gangle..

[Obviously, the purple robed was quick to apologize. He didn't know why for certain he did the things he did. Handing the notebook back, he leaned against the pillowed wall, listening to the ribbon girl's sorrows attentively.]

It isn't exactly your fault you're trapped in a form like this. You can't control it.

[The oldest replied, glancing at her, a weak chuckle leaving his non-existent mouth as he stared at himself, then back at her with those blue eyes. They looked much more stable, almost like there was never haze in his pupils]

I mean, I'm a chess piece. So, no, I don't believe that it's your fault for anything.. or that you're weak, because you aren't.

[It was strange to hear a speech as strong minded and heartfelt from Kinger. Usually he was well.. respectfully, a total nutcase. Was it that he felt comfortable in smaller areas or smaller groups? The most logical being that it's a defense mechanism]

[It won't be known though. Not like the fake royalty would magically get well or the masked one tell everyone about his strange behaviour.]

Er.. would you like to draw? I mean.. I'm not much of an artist..

“I-it’s okay, I wanted you to keep it.”

[Gangle gave a nod, assuring him that he was fine once again. It was hard to express without her comedy mask, but how much Kinger seemed to like and appreciate her art made her very happy. Others liking her art always filled her with joy, it was a big part of her so she held it close. Of course, the only signs of this were her tears regenerating a bit slower and her ever-so-slightly straighter posture.]

[A few theories about the Kings sudden…lucidity did fill her mind. Maybe the craziness was a partial act to keep himself sane? If so it was certainly effective, considering how long he’d been here…or maybe all of the noise of the circus made him unable to think clearly- it was a lot at times. However, for the most part she was too fixated on his words to connect any real dots.]

“Th-thank you…”

[She perked up a bit at the mention of drawing, quickly grabbing her notebook.]

“That would be nice..! And d-don’t worry, I like seeing what people make, even if they don’t have much experience.”

[Gangle tore out a blank page from her notebook and grabbed an extra pencil from its spiral, offering them to Kinger. She was really curious what the chess piece wanted to draw…art’s an expression of the mind and self, things she apparently didn’t know much about regarding Kinger. This would be fun!]

[It is truly an incredible achievement to have Kinger be somewhat aware of his surroundings. He wasn't loud like he usually is, neither was he distracted, it almost seemed like a miracle! For sure, a miracle! Definitely rough around the edges.. nonetheless in comparison to his typical personality, he was doing so much better]

[He too felt cheery with how things were going. It wasn't common for him to interact with the crew one-on-one. Usually something happened with Kinger being paired up with another who didn't want to be with him. He didn't mind all that much, at the end of the day. Everyone knows he's not doing well mentally. They could throw in a rude comment or two but they never really hurt him.]

Haha.. drawing has never been a talent of mine- I mean, computer science does require you to be creative but not in the exact way that you are Gangle!

[Kinger shared about his life a little to the masked. He nodded his head in appreciation when the paper and pencil were given to him. It proved rather difficult to actually draw without elbows.. he was astonished how the other made of ribbons could be capable of doing such details in her art. His art of a moth ended up worse than a kindergartener's.]

Goodness, this is so bad! Look at this!

[The calmed manic laughed as he pointed at his piece, trying to understand how he messed up that badly.]

“Computer science..?”

[She echoed, glancing back at Kinger for a moment.]

“Hehe, I c-can see it.”

[She smiled, focusing on her drawing once more. Truthfully they’d look a lot better if she had a more ‘normal’ body, but in her years here she learned to make the ribbons work. Sometimes she still ended up accidentally drawing a line through her art when putting too much pressure though…]

[Gangle stayed focused on her drawing the entire time. It was of her and Zooble in a small cafe. The characters clearly had more attention to detail than the background, since it was just a small doodle, but even then it all looked great. If there’s one thing she liked about herself, it was her artistic skill.]

[She looked up at the drawing, a short, quiet laugh being all that escaped. Even if it wasn’t drawn very well, she still liked to see it! Everyone’s art had meaning, it was a piece of themselves, and that’s wonderful. Stick figures or the Mona Lisa, it’s human. A nice way to remind herself of that in this digital world.]

“H-here, I can show you how I draw bugs!”

[Gangle shifted around a bit so Kinger could see her notebook as she was drawing, flipping to a new page and sketching out moths in multiple different poses, though some ended up looking a little more like butterflies.]

“I don’t really…r-remember what moths look like, exactly, but this is probably close- right?”

[The King would nod his head along upon her questioning tone. He had studied Computer Science, the very same subject that doomed him to this eternal digital hell. He wasn't even sure if he was trapped or if he was dead in reality and this was the place that captured his soul.]

[Those thoughts were too complicated for him to continue trying to understand. His misplaced eyes focused on Gangle's wrist made of silk drawing a few attempts at a moth. He sort of nodded along, not judging that the insect looked wrong. Momentarily he reached out to tap at one of the sketches.]

This one.. it looks like the Attacus atlas..

[He calmly provided, almost expecting for the masked faced to understand what that was. His own hands started to draw the specified moth, inspired by the one that she had drawn on a whim]

Oh uhm. Sorry, I forgot that.. you probably wouldn't understand. Attacus atlas is a moth that looks like a butterfly.

[Shaky hands continued doodling, while also trying to make it more detailed. It's body was fuzzy yet their wings were wide and pretty like a butterfly's]

It's often just called the Atlas moth.. they're the largest moth in the world..

[Kinger was muttering to himself at this point. His eyes not meeting Gangle's. He was simply only showing her his own interpretation]

[She turned back to Kinger, sitting up to focus more on him than her sketchbook. Bugs weren’t something she was super interested in back in reality- honestly they were just really scary, but there were a few that weren’t so bad! Butterflies, moths, bees, and…spiders. Most people hated spiders, but she appreciated them killing the more gross bugs and usually keeping their distance.]

“That sounds pretty…”

[She leaned closer to his paper, both to see what he was drawing and hear him through the mumbling. While the drawing wasn’t very ‘clean,’ she was able to tell the details Kinger was trying to draw, memorizing them so she could replicate it later. Kinger would like that, right?]

“D-do you have a favorite bug..?”

[Surely the king of bugs had a favorite. He knew so much about them all- so which one did he see as the best? That got her curious! Whatever he thought somehow surpassed all the others he was bound to have a good reason for.]

[…This still felt bizarre to Gangle, though; having a calm, coherent chat with Kinger. She’d been here a while, she felt- and yet somehow she always missed this side of him.]

[Kinger was so immersed in his own drawing that when Gangle asked him about his favourite bug, he got surprised. Quickly he snapped out of his initial shock. This reaction was a whole lot different compared to the predictable behaviour of the purple robed. No scream or telling the person they scared him.. just acknowledging what has happened without further comments.] Oh.. uhm. I don’t actually have a favourite. In fact I really hated bugs for a while.. [He started, glancing at his hand as he pictured a centipede or a spider crawling at his palm. If it was years back, he would of screamed in absolute terror, trying to get it off.. but now it seemed like second nature to him.. it was peaceful, it was.. Queenie’s hobby. An unexplainable emotion filled his blue eyes, the type nobody in the circus had seen before on his face.. or therefore lack of?] ..It was my wife who got me to like them. She.. abstracted way before your time. I don’t.. remember her name but here she was called Queenie.. to match me. [The eyes of the royal filled with tears but he wiped them away, taking the moment to begin a new sketch, drawing what appeared to be a female and male beetle.] Queenie always claimed to not have a favourite.. though I think her favourites were beetles. She also drew a lot like you, she drew us as beetles. I on the other hand.. feel less threatened by butterflies. [He chuckled quietly, managing to do something similar to what his wife had done years ago. Out of the blue Kinger placed a hand on Gangle’s ribbon hand, too afraid to place it anywhere else due to her less-than-ideal flimsy body. A fatherly look in his eye.] With good memories Gangle, you can do anything. Don’t forget the people who cherish and care about you..

[Gangle sat up, listening attentively. Every word was fascinating- she was learning so much about someone she’d believed was simply crazy. After so many years being stuck with someone you’d think you know them but…there’s so much more here.]

[She stayed quiet, scared to interrupt his train of thought. He had a wife in the circus..? Gangle always assumed everyone who arrived here were strangers, but to have someone so close to you before this digital prison, then having to watch them lose their mind…she couldn’t imagine it. Kinger must’ve seen everything in his time here. How has he lasted this long? She felt bad seeing him cry, she didn’t mean to bring up memories but…at least it seems like they were happy ones.]

[However he’d remained after all this time, she was glad to have him here now. After today she felt like she had another person she could trust- another genuine, kind, person.]

“I…”

[She wiped a tear off her mask at his final sentence, smiling up at him.]

“You- you know, I think your wife would be happy and proud to know you’re still…here after all this time. H-helping people and being so nice…”

[She laughed softly, glancing to the side.]

“A-And it sounds to me like you have a favorite too, even if you don’t think so.”

[Kinger feeling ‘less threatened’ by butterflies technically means he thinks a little higher of them than other bugs, right? She’d keep that in mind.]

“Thank you for, um, telling me all of this.”

[Kinger couldn’t blame her for assuming he was a hoo-ha, as Jax liked to say. It was less insulting than being told he never was sane. These blue eyes have seen enough traumas to be let off the hook for his unreasonable behaviours. He wished he could improve but.. there’s nothing he could do in reality. He wasn’t sure if it was his fault entirely though to a certain degree maybe there’s truth in that.] [Gangle’s words were meaningful to him, as he closed his eyes, imagining that Queenie would be happy to see how far he has come. She would definitely be upset that he’s still.. stuck in this circus but.. he knows she wouldn’t be mad at him. That woman was far too kind-hearted, even for him. Up to this day he doesn’t believe he deserved her.. how he misses her, would she ever know?] Thank you Gangle for listening. I hope she’s happy.. where ever she may be. I do my best to be.. better, to do better.. even if my absent mind can be.. a struggle. [He sighed while looking at the dim atmosphere of the pillow fortress. This was the place Queenie last resided. with him. She didn’t question how childish it was to make a fortress out of pillows, in fact she found it.. cute. For someone who’s struggled to fit in a lot, she made him feel.. basically equal with everyone.] [Turning his head towards the teary-eyed girl, he raised a hand and gently pat her on the mask, which was supposed to be her head but.. it wasn’t really wide enough to actually be considered a head. Was that rude to think about?] Butterflies? I suppose so.. though they also have creepy factors to them.. some of them are opportunistic blood drinkers. Isn’t it odd?

“I-I think you’re doing great, if it means anything.”

[She was trying to be a little positive and reassuring, even if it wasn’t her specialty. It was the least she could do, right? Kinger’s being so nice, and one of the first sane things he said to her was that she was ‘resilient’, a huge compliment in her mind. She’d believed the exact opposite but…maybe she was wrong?]

[The pillow fort felt really nice, honestly. She felt a lot more relaxed in this darkness and the only other sound to occupy it being Kinger. Even when he was being ‘crazy’ he was one of the circus members she liked more. Aside from the sudden reactions or loud yelling, he never really did anything that bothered her. Now though..? Well, at the least she’d probably go out of her way to talk to him more.]

“Um- they can do that..? I thought they couldn’t bite that hard.”

[Gangle didn’t outwardly react very much to physical affection, but it did seem to calm her down a little. The regeneration of her tears slowed down, and she stopped fidgeting with her ribbons as much.]

[…Though the ‘fun fact’ about butterflies definitely gave her a new fear.]

[It was not like they chose the bodies they were gifted with in the digital circus. Gangle cried often because her comedy mask gets broken. If your emotions rely on a mask, of course you would think you aren’t resilient. Especially a mask made out of porcelain, how is that fair to the girl? It just isn’t. Not that things were majorly fair in this crazy place but they couldn’t really complain. They were durable enough for it, right?] Butterflies can’t actually bite as they lack the teeth or stingers necessary to break skin. The ones who drink blood usually do from pre-existing wounds when needing nutrients. Typically, they don’t do it and humans are safe from such situation. [Kinger ended up explaining, taking the time to calm the ribbon-made from a spiral of worry about blood-drinking butterflies. It was a strange feature he must agree, though they didn’t really attack humans for it. If anything, they would lick their sweat and fly away.] Although an insect that CAN drink human blood is the Calyptra Thalictra moth! Here I can illustrate it for you.. the moth, I mean! [He excitedly added on to his sentence whilst beginning to sketch the creature on his paper. Maybe he wasn’t all that sane after all, being interested in such a nightmare inducing moth didn’t seem normal for social standards. Who are they kidding though, it’s not like they had any stability in this circus.]

[It wasn’t like Gangle was one to judge. Everyone had their own interests, including her, and honestly all of these strange things about bugs were really fascinating! She was kinda surprised Kinger remembered so much about them…unless Caine was able to give them facts from the outside world? She doubted it. This was very impressive!]

“Wha-..? Butterflies can’t have teeth to bite, but moths can? I thought they were almost the same…a-aside from moths being attracted to light, I guess.”

[Gangle observed the specific details Kinger was trying to make out with his drawing, thinking of ways it could’ve looked in real life. Realism was far from her main art style, but she could try something similar to it to draw these again! She’d like to have a clear image of all these bugs Kinger liked so much…and maybe give him one too for when his memory isn’t so clear.]

[Kinger remembered these facts at random. Sometimes he forgot his own circus name, it was difficult to manage through this way of living. Maybe it was a coping mechanism from when his.. wife abstracted; somewhere deep in his subconscious, he connected that bugs were familiarity and familiarity was comfort.] [Gangle was a far better artist than he was, even with his attempt at realism he didn’t understand the study of art. Art needed to come from the soul, which drawing these creatures was but it also needs the creativity, the want to make, to draw. To be an artist is something great, even if it’s super overlooked.] Ehh, no, they are pretty similar to each other. Moths don’t have teeth either only some moths have a proboscis and feed on nectar like butterflies. [Just like the honeybees too. Life is full of wonderous really.. it’s such a shame they haven’t experienced these amazing, delightful things in a long while. Kinger especially, he’s been here for years.. he didn’t miss the expectations life weighted on him but.. he wasn’t unhappy. He doesn’t think he was unhappy.] Others have vestigial mouths, I forgot to add. But- enough of me, right? You haven’t.. talked at all, Gangle. [He mentioned, giving her a look of sincerity as he finally put down the sheet of paper filled with the dazzling designs of insects.]

“Oh- um…”

[She looked down and began fidgeting with her ribbon hands again, not expecting to have the focus on her. She was happy just listening to all of these strange facts, even if she’d probably never be fond of bugs herself. Talking wasn’t a strength of hers, far from it.]

“I just…don’t have much to say, t-that’s all.”

[She grabbed her sketchbook again and started flipping through the pages, keeping it close enough to be hard to see until she got to the one she wanted.]

“N-not anything to say, really, aside from my drawings…um, here’s the page where I tried to draw some horses for Ragatha. They’re not that bad, b-but I like drawing people more…also I didn’t have a reference.”

[Gangle looked around at the pillow fort. Maybe she could ask Kinger some questions she was curious about? He’d been here the longest, and was somehow the most mysterious of them all. And why was he sane right now? Ah…she didn’t want to ask too many questions though.]

kinger! have you seen gangle? she hasn’t been.. well since the spudsy adventure..

[Zooble exclaiming his name got him out of his daydreams, catching him off guard thus causing him to jolt and scream] AUAHH, ZOOBLE! [He said, letting out a strange, dazed laugh. Kinger rubbed at his chess head, trying to remember where he had last seen Gangle. Was it in her room? The main stage? Which adventure were they even talking about?] I think… [The one dressed in purple began, raising a finger then absolutely losing track of their own thought. Well, it wouldn’t make sense to search for her, right? That would be hard to do, how could Kinger help in this scenario?] Ah, I can help find Gangle! [Then he, like a coo-coo, screamed her name whilst flaring his hands around @gangledraws ]

“EEK-“

[Even from a distance she managed to be startled, the sound of something shattering following her shriek. She sighed and ignored the happy mask on the floor- it’d been so fragile lately it was practically useless- and walked over to the screaming chess piece.]

[It didn’t take long for her to emerge from behind a blue wall, quietly walking over.]

“I’m…here Kinger, y-you can stop shouting. What did you need..?”

[She rubbed the side of her mask, only mildly bothered by the loud sound. She was used to it by now. Once she registered who was in front of her, she finally perked up a little.]

“Oh! Hey, Zooble..!”

[She gave them a wave and a small smile.]

[Gangle wandered over, the sound of her footsteps inaudible. She held onto her notebook with a firm grip, using her free ribbon to tap Kinger and alert him to hopefully avoid startling him for the 50th time.]

“Hey, Kinger. I um…I drew you in my notebook, if you would like to see it!”

[She held it up for him to grab, a shaky smile lingering as always. Hopefully he liked it! She hadn’t talked to the chess piece much, so she was a little nervous to hear what he would say- even if it would probably be some nonsense, judging from the little she did know.]

[On the page there were a few different drawings; one of just Kinger, one with him and a bunch of butterflies in a flower field, one with him and Ragatha, and a few other smaller doodles- the only notable one being a scratched out attempt at drawing him on a chess board.]

“I- I don’t know much about butterflies, so I just drew a bunch of monarchs…maybe that’s sorta fitting? I hope you like it.”

[The poor chess piece's shoulders still tensed up as he felt the tap, at least this time he didn't scream. He turned around and his bottom eyelids lifted excitedly, being able to recognise her]

Hi Gangle! You what for me?

[He asked while doing the royal wave to her. He leaned over to look at what she's holding then paused. Shaky hands reached out to take the notebook away from her ribbon hands. Suddenly he came to his senses that Gangle had drawn him. Using his free hand, he attempted to make a shadow to cover his eyes. Of course with artificial lighting he couldn't quite get the effect.]

[Kinger's right eye attempted to space out but he squinted them, forcing himself to keep focus, despite how much it ached in his head. He finally ended up holding it with both hands, trembling at the detailed drawings and even the depiction of the butterflies. He ran a finger through the pages containing the drawings.]

Wow.. Gangle this is great. I.. wow.

[Words weren't his forte. His blue eyes scanned over the notebook multiple times. Lifting his head, he stared her in the eyes, a mixture of gratefulness and confusion.]

Thank you. Can I.. keep? It?

[He questioned her, unsure if he could get the art from her or if she was far too shy to give it to her. Kinger's pupils remained on the monarch butterflies..]

Gangle.. do you know that monarch butterflies represent resilience and the soul’s journey?

It reminds me of.. you, in a way.

[With the amount of times the poor girl had her comedy mask broken, of course she was resilient.]

[It’s safe to say the ‘hesitation’ increased her anxiety a bit, tapping her ribbon arms together as she waited for any verbal response once Kinger realized what was going on. Her big ‘empty’ eyes stared up at him, observing his reaction closely. Please like it please like it please like it…]

[Hearing his voice change to a softer one caught her off guard, seeming a little less scared at the quiet tone.]

“Y-you like it..?”

[Gangle smiled, standing up a little taller.]

“Of course you can keep it..! I made it for you. A-and I’d be happy to draw more for you in the future!- um, if you want.”

[She tilted her head at the fact. She didn’t know much about butterflies at all, much less their meanings. The ‘monarch’ butterfly meaning resilience made sense, she supposed. They’re very bright and inspirational and, well, ‘monarchs’…wait, what was that about her?]

“Huh-? Oh, n-no, I’m not really a resilient person. I-I mean, Jax pushes me around everyday so easily and I n-never fight back or anything so…I think you m-mean Pomni or Ragatha, they’re really resilient.”

[She gave a weak smile, wiping a comically large tear off her mask. She knew she was pretty weak willed, it’s why she listened to everything Jax said, isn’t it? But that’s okay! Not everyone can be strong…]

“But, um, I’m really happy you like my drawings!”

[The dazed King nodded his head towards her. There was something so meaningful to him seeing these little art pieces of himself, even the scribbled one meant plenty. It was hard to express himself when his mind was at sea.]

[He took a moment to try and get himself together again. It was difficult to tell her how hypnotic the art style was.]

GANGLE

[He shouted out of the blue, almost excited to see her, even if she was just standing there.]

I need to go to my fortress..

[Added the muddled man, as he reached to take her hand, strolling down with the notebook in his other hand to the main stage. At some point he dropped the notebook and apologised.]

[Upon arrival he basically jumped in, relief filling his body. Curling up, he held the item delicately. Now he could focus a little better.]

Oh.. about earlier. I think you're resilient.

[The chess piece began speaking then paused. It wasn't pure darkness for him to speak more freely but.. it was enough for the moment.]

Pomni is intelligent while Ragatha is emphatic but she always.. beats herself up. You, on the other hand..

[Kinger wanted to scoot closer to her but faltered. He didn’t think she was much of a physical affection type.]

You're emotional and that's okay. That means you are resilient. Have you ever thought that maybe.. the rudeness of people is just their own insecurities coming out?

[His eyes wandered away from her to the drawings. If he could smile, he would.. but the lack of mouth was evident enough that he couldn't even if he really wanted to.]

Yes I enjoy your drawings Gangle.. I'm sorry if I've forgotten if you've shown me before I'm.. not good with memories.

“EEK!”

[She flinched at the yelling, covering her eyes for just a moment before returning to normal. It wasn’t unusual for Kinger to randomly yell, but she still never got used to it…]

“Y-your fortress..? Why- oh-!”

[Gangle wasn’t hard to catch off guard, especially if Jax wasn’t around to make her worried. She quickly got over it though, following closely behind Kinger, reassuring him that dropping the notebook was fine- it wasn’t fragile. During the walk she wasn’t paying much attention, more-so thinking about Kinger’s slightly different behavior for that moment. It was nice…she should definitely draw for him more! Not that anything was wrong with this Kinger, they’re both nice to have around.]

[She sat down a few feet away from Kinger, looking around at the pillow fort. In the past she’d had the funny idea that Kinger was hiding some sort of secret lair in here since she never had gone in, but this made a lot more sense. A calm, quiet place to be alone in the chaos of the circus…she didn’t know such a place existed.]

[Once Kinger began speaking again, she listened intently, tilting her head up at him and taking mental notes of every word, idly wiping away A tear or two. He seemed so much more aware, more…intelligent? She wasn’t sure how to describe it, it was fascinating- almost like seeing an entirely new person.]

“I…I suppose. But isn’t being emotional also a bad thing..? I’m unable t-to handle the things that happen, and my mask breaks, then I’m like…this everyday.”

[She gestured to her natural tragedy mask, wiping away two more tears that seemed to constantly regenerate.]

[He was definitely much more sane in the dark. It stabilised him.. reminding him of the good memories he held dear. Despite his chubby fingers, he managed to take the pages containing himself off the notebook without ripping any of the rest. He held the artwork happily but realized what he had done suddenly]

Oh stars, I didn't even ask, I'm sorry Gangle..

[Obviously, the purple robed was quick to apologize. He didn't know why for certain he did the things he did. Handing the notebook back, he leaned against the pillowed wall, listening to the ribbon girl's sorrows attentively.]

It isn't exactly your fault you're trapped in a form like this. You can't control it.

[The oldest replied, glancing at her, a weak chuckle leaving his non-existent mouth as he stared at himself, then back at her with those blue eyes. They looked much more stable, almost like there was never haze in his pupils]

I mean, I'm a chess piece. So, no, I don't believe that it's your fault for anything.. or that you're weak, because you aren't.

[It was strange to hear a speech as strong minded and heartfelt from Kinger. Usually he was well.. respectfully, a total nutcase. Was it that he felt comfortable in smaller areas or smaller groups? The most logical being that it's a defense mechanism]

[It won't be known though. Not like the fake royalty would magically get well or the masked one tell everyone about his strange behaviour.]

Er.. would you like to draw? I mean.. I'm not much of an artist..

“I-it’s okay, I wanted you to keep it.”

[Gangle gave a nod, assuring him that he was fine once again. It was hard to express without her comedy mask, but how much Kinger seemed to like and appreciate her art made her very happy. Others liking her art always filled her with joy, it was a big part of her so she held it close. Of course, the only signs of this were her tears regenerating a bit slower and her ever-so-slightly straighter posture.]

[A few theories about the Kings sudden…lucidity did fill her mind. Maybe the craziness was a partial act to keep himself sane? If so it was certainly effective, considering how long he’d been here…or maybe all of the noise of the circus made him unable to think clearly- it was a lot at times. However, for the most part she was too fixated on his words to connect any real dots.]

“Th-thank you…”

[She perked up a bit at the mention of drawing, quickly grabbing her notebook.]

“That would be nice..! And d-don’t worry, I like seeing what people make, even if they don’t have much experience.”

[Gangle tore out a blank page from her notebook and grabbed an extra pencil from its spiral, offering them to Kinger. She was really curious what the chess piece wanted to draw…art’s an expression of the mind and self, things she apparently didn’t know much about regarding Kinger. This would be fun!]

[It is truly an incredible achievement to have Kinger be somewhat aware of his surroundings. He wasn't loud like he usually is, neither was he distracted, it almost seemed like a miracle! For sure, a miracle! Definitely rough around the edges.. nonetheless in comparison to his typical personality, he was doing so much better]

[He too felt cheery with how things were going. It wasn't common for him to interact with the crew one-on-one. Usually something happened with Kinger being paired up with another who didn't want to be with him. He didn't mind all that much, at the end of the day. Everyone knows he's not doing well mentally. They could throw in a rude comment or two but they never really hurt him.]

Haha.. drawing has never been a talent of mine- I mean, computer science does require you to be creative but not in the exact way that you are Gangle!

[Kinger shared about his life a little to the masked. He nodded his head in appreciation when the paper and pencil were given to him. It proved rather difficult to actually draw without elbows.. he was astonished how the other made of ribbons could be capable of doing such details in her art. His art of a moth ended up worse than a kindergartener's.]

Goodness, this is so bad! Look at this!

[The calmed manic laughed as he pointed at his piece, trying to understand how he messed up that badly.]

“Computer science..?”

[She echoed, glancing back at Kinger for a moment.]

“Hehe, I c-can see it.”

[She smiled, focusing on her drawing once more. Truthfully they’d look a lot better if she had a more ‘normal’ body, but in her years here she learned to make the ribbons work. Sometimes she still ended up accidentally drawing a line through her art when putting too much pressure though…]

[Gangle stayed focused on her drawing the entire time. It was of her and Zooble in a small cafe. The characters clearly had more attention to detail than the background, since it was just a small doodle, but even then it all looked great. If there’s one thing she liked about herself, it was her artistic skill.]

[She looked up at the drawing, a short, quiet laugh being all that escaped. Even if it wasn’t drawn very well, she still liked to see it! Everyone’s art had meaning, it was a piece of themselves, and that’s wonderful. Stick figures or the Mona Lisa, it’s human. A nice way to remind herself of that in this digital world.]

“H-here, I can show you how I draw bugs!”

[Gangle shifted around a bit so Kinger could see her notebook as she was drawing, flipping to a new page and sketching out moths in multiple different poses, though some ended up looking a little more like butterflies.]

“I don’t really…r-remember what moths look like, exactly, but this is probably close- right?”

[The King would nod his head along upon her questioning tone. He had studied Computer Science, the very same subject that doomed him to this eternal digital hell. He wasn't even sure if he was trapped or if he was dead in reality and this was the place that captured his soul.]

[Those thoughts were too complicated for him to continue trying to understand. His misplaced eyes focused on Gangle's wrist made of silk drawing a few attempts at a moth. He sort of nodded along, not judging that the insect looked wrong. Momentarily he reached out to tap at one of the sketches.]

This one.. it looks like the Attacus atlas..

[He calmly provided, almost expecting for the masked faced to understand what that was. His own hands started to draw the specified moth, inspired by the one that she had drawn on a whim]

Oh uhm. Sorry, I forgot that.. you probably wouldn't understand. Attacus atlas is a moth that looks like a butterfly.

[Shaky hands continued doodling, while also trying to make it more detailed. It's body was fuzzy yet their wings were wide and pretty like a butterfly's]

It's often just called the Atlas moth.. they're the largest moth in the world..

[Kinger was muttering to himself at this point. His eyes not meeting Gangle's. He was simply only showing her his own interpretation]

[She turned back to Kinger, sitting up to focus more on him than her sketchbook. Bugs weren’t something she was super interested in back in reality- honestly they were just really scary, but there were a few that weren’t so bad! Butterflies, moths, bees, and…spiders. Most people hated spiders, but she appreciated them killing the more gross bugs and usually keeping their distance.]

“That sounds pretty…”

[She leaned closer to his paper, both to see what he was drawing and hear him through the mumbling. While the drawing wasn’t very ‘clean,’ she was able to tell the details Kinger was trying to draw, memorizing them so she could replicate it later. Kinger would like that, right?]

“D-do you have a favorite bug..?”

[Surely the king of bugs had a favorite. He knew so much about them all- so which one did he see as the best? That got her curious! Whatever he thought somehow surpassed all the others he was bound to have a good reason for.]

[…This still felt bizarre to Gangle, though; having a calm, coherent chat with Kinger. She’d been here a while, she felt- and yet somehow she always missed this side of him.]

[Kinger was so immersed in his own drawing that when Gangle asked him about his favourite bug, he got surprised. Quickly he snapped out of his initial shock. This reaction was a whole lot different compared to the predictable behaviour of the purple robed. No scream or telling the person they scared him.. just acknowledging what has happened without further comments.] Oh.. uhm. I don’t actually have a favourite. In fact I really hated bugs for a while.. [He started, glancing at his hand as he pictured a centipede or a spider crawling at his palm. If it was years back, he would of screamed in absolute terror, trying to get it off.. but now it seemed like second nature to him.. it was peaceful, it was.. Queenie’s hobby. An unexplainable emotion filled his blue eyes, the type nobody in the circus had seen before on his face.. or therefore lack of?] ..It was my wife who got me to like them. She.. abstracted way before your time. I don’t.. remember her name but here she was called Queenie.. to match me. [The eyes of the royal filled with tears but he wiped them away, taking the moment to begin a new sketch, drawing what appeared to be a female and male beetle.] Queenie always claimed to not have a favourite.. though I think her favourites were beetles. She also drew a lot like you, she drew us as beetles. I on the other hand.. feel less threatened by butterflies. [He chuckled quietly, managing to do something similar to what his wife had done years ago. Out of the blue Kinger placed a hand on Gangle’s ribbon hand, too afraid to place it anywhere else due to her less-than-ideal flimsy body. A fatherly look in his eye.] With good memories Gangle, you can do anything. Don’t forget the people who cherish and care about you..

[Gangle sat up, listening attentively. Every word was fascinating- she was learning so much about someone she’d believed was simply crazy. After so many years being stuck with someone you’d think you know them but…there’s so much more here.]

[She stayed quiet, scared to interrupt his train of thought. He had a wife in the circus..? Gangle always assumed everyone who arrived here were strangers, but to have someone so close to you before this digital prison, then having to watch them lose their mind…she couldn’t imagine it. Kinger must’ve seen everything in his time here. How has he lasted this long? She felt bad seeing him cry, she didn’t mean to bring up memories but…at least it seems like they were happy ones.]

[However he’d remained after all this time, she was glad to have him here now. After today she felt like she had another person she could trust- another genuine, kind, person.]

“I…”

[She wiped a tear off her mask at his final sentence, smiling up at him.]

“You- you know, I think your wife would be happy and proud to know you’re still…here after all this time. H-helping people and being so nice…”

[She laughed softly, glancing to the side.]

“A-And it sounds to me like you have a favorite too, even if you don’t think so.”

[Kinger feeling ‘less threatened’ by butterflies technically means he thinks a little higher of them than other bugs, right? She’d keep that in mind.]

“Thank you for, um, telling me all of this.”

[Kinger couldn’t blame her for assuming he was a hoo-ha, as Jax liked to say. It was less insulting than being told he never was sane. These blue eyes have seen enough traumas to be let off the hook for his unreasonable behaviours. He wished he could improve but.. there’s nothing he could do in reality. He wasn’t sure if it was his fault entirely though to a certain degree maybe there’s truth in that.] [Gangle’s words were meaningful to him, as he closed his eyes, imagining that Queenie would be happy to see how far he has come. She would definitely be upset that he’s still.. stuck in this circus but.. he knows she wouldn’t be mad at him. That woman was far too kind-hearted, even for him. Up to this day he doesn’t believe he deserved her.. how he misses her, would she ever know?] Thank you Gangle for listening. I hope she’s happy.. where ever she may be. I do my best to be.. better, to do better.. even if my absent mind can be.. a struggle. [He sighed while looking at the dim atmosphere of the pillow fortress. This was the place Queenie last resided. with him. She didn’t question how childish it was to make a fortress out of pillows, in fact she found it.. cute. For someone who’s struggled to fit in a lot, she made him feel.. basically equal with everyone.] [Turning his head towards the teary-eyed girl, he raised a hand and gently pat her on the mask, which was supposed to be her head but.. it wasn’t really wide enough to actually be considered a head. Was that rude to think about?] Butterflies? I suppose so.. though they also have creepy factors to them.. some of them are opportunistic blood drinkers. Isn’t it odd?

“I-I think you’re doing great, if it means anything.”

[She was trying to be a little positive and reassuring, even if it wasn’t her specialty. It was the least she could do, right? [It was not like they chose the bodies they were gifted with in the digital circus. Gangle cried often because her comedy mask gets broken. If your emotions rely on a mask, of course you would think you aren’t resilient. Especially a mask made out of porcelain, how is that fair to the girl? It just isn’t. Not that things were majorly fair in this crazy place but they couldn’t really complain. They were durable enough for it, right?] Butterflies can’t actually bite as they lack the teeth or stingers necessary to break skin. The ones who drink blood usually do from pre-existing wounds when needing nutrients. Typically, they don’t do it and humans are safe from such situation. [Kinger ended up explaining, taking the time to calm the ribbon-made from a spiral of worry about blood-drinking butterflies. It was a strange feature he must agree, though they didn’t really attack humans for it. If anything, they would lick their sweat and fly away.] Although an insect that CAN drink human blood is the Calyptra Thalictra moth! Here I can illustrate it for you.. the moth, I mean! [He excitedly added on to his sentence whilst beginning to sketch the creature on his paper. Maybe he wasn’t all that sane after all, being interested in such a nightmare inducing moth didn’t seem normal for social standards. Who are they kidding though, it’s not like they had any stability in this circus.]

[It wasn’t like Gangle was one to judge. Everyone had their own interests, including her, and honestly all of these strange things about bugs were really fascinating! She was kinda surprised Kinger remembered so much about them…unless Caine was able to give them facts from the outside world? She doubted it. This was very impressive!]

“Wha-..? Butterflies can’t have teeth to bite, but moths can? I thought they were almost the same…a-aside from moths being attracted to light, I guess.”

[Gangle observed the specific details Kinger was trying to make out with his drawing, thinking of ways it could’ve looked in real life. Realism was far from her main art style, but she could try something similar to it to draw these again! She’d like to have a clear image of all these bugs Kinger liked so much…and maybe give him one too for when his memory isn’t so clear.]
