fun phenomenon
something about Toy Story toys is so strange to me. versions of animated characters based on real world toys, turned back into toys that are slightly different than the actual toys. slinky dog with a rubber spiral instead of a classic metal slinky. the porcelain bo peep and cloth woody turned into jointed plastic action figures. when toy story 4 came out and i saw a $30 talking action figure of forky, a character made out of a spork and a pipe cleaner, i stood in the walmart toy aisle staring at it like cameron from ferris bueller's day off staring at that painting in the art museum

like many people have said this better than me but no it IS odd that we've come to think of potatoes as so quintessentially european that their presence in historical fantasy where they're anachronistic doesn't jar. and yes people are trying to have the trappings of post-colonial europe without engaging w the icky colonialism part and yes people are neglecting to imagine what a european cuisine without potatoes would be like.
im fully in favour of 'let people have fun w their fantasy world' but is considering how the potatoes got there in the absence of colonialism not a fun exercise? maybe every year the dragon riders go on a great transatlantic potato pilgrimage
perhaps a good way to sum up the issue here is:
if you put potatoes in your medieval european style fantasy world people will by and large not find it jarring and accept it as a normal fantasy trope
if you put, say, black people in your medieval european style fantasy world a whole demographic of people will get very angry and accuse you of breaking their immersion
this is in spite of the fact that black people were a lot more common in medieval europe than potatoes.
the magic growing dinosaur and the housefly (happy make a terrible comic day!)
The apple they fed to snow white wasnt poision at all it was just a red delicious
My beautiful horse.
I love the three different ways that I’ve talked up kcd to people because I’m either like
1. It’s this really intense historical medieval open would rpg
2. It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking story about the cycle of violence and trauma and either breaking it or reinforcing it
Or
3. You can be a bisexual disaster queer enemies to friends to lovers with the lord that you’re the page/bodyguard for and it’s one of the most beautiful relationships I’ve seen played out in a video game (queer or not)
And usually it’s the third one that gets people going “ah yes I’ll play this”
No, seriously,
dress up is one of the most important pillars of gameplay that is often ignored by game developers to disasterous results
