Watercolor painting of a sky scene. So this is a picture of Beppu bay in Oita Prefecture, Japan. It is painted with four colors. I am quite happy with this painting. But I want to make the light even more powerful. I really like the blue and gray clouds and even the orange color is good. But maybe I need to show more yellow ocher. I am really happy with this painting. I was just playing around. It is painted with just three colors and three brushes. It is really amazing to see the kind of paintings you can produce with just a few colors. I painted this sea scene with just three brushes and three colors. I am really amazed by the kind of paintings you can produce with just three colors. I have now done about seven or eight paintings of different scenes using just three colors it has been a really educational experience. And I hope it is improving my ability as an artist. I am so happy with how this particular painting turned out. Perhaps I overdid the sky a bit and a slightly simpler one would have been more beautiful. Another reason that using three colors has been a good idea is that it has made my paintings I think much lighter and brighter. This is version number three. I am really happy with this painting. I can really feel something dramatic and deep in the sky and I love the texture of the road. No doubt at some point I will come back to this scene and paint it again. My only problem is a title. I have no idea what to call this painting. In July of 2019 I was browsing the photos on my cellphone and one image caught my eye. I liked it so much I couldn't resist attempting a painting of it.

And here is another attempt. I am very happy with the sky in this painting. I wanted to make it much more powerful and brighter and I think I have achieved that in this one. I also like the use of colors for the shadowy buildings such as the use of a warm orange and a cool blue That said I still think the first one, which was super simple, is the best one. I am though very happy with this painting and it has been really fun painting this scene. I think the buildings in Japan sometimes look very interesting because each building is so different to the one next to it unlike the western world where the buildings can just be copies of one another. Although that irregular pattern of the buildings in Japan is not always beautiful sometimes it can at the very least create an interesting skyline which I think happened with this painting. https://www.instagram.com/p/BzGI51KHIS2/?igshid=ni16d6cvh06m

So I decided to have another go and I wanted to have more little highlights in the shadowy buildings and a little bit more variety of color in the shadows. But I think the previous painting, which is much simpler is better, it just seems to be far more powerful and effective. Also I don’t think the sky is powerful enough in this painting.
