for garlic soup week day 3: angst/injury

archie is all hands when one of their partners is hurt. skittered fingers over blooming blood, and always the same words, a mantra, though you can’t always tell whom it’s for: “you’re okay. you’re fine. you’re good, mate. look at you, yeah? you’re okay.”

both jim and zheng are anger personified, righteous in their interrogations. who did this to you? who do i have to fight? oh, that fucker? gimme five minutes with him outside, i swear…jim is outright in their seething; zheng fumes when no one’s looking so she can strike later.

and olu is quiet consistency because of course he is, diffusing where he can and pressing a soothing hand to clammy skin or kissing the crown of a head. the blaze in his eyes is enough for them to know he’d fight to the death for them.

a ship knocked sideways by an unforgiving storm; a knife fight gone wrong; a drunken duel. the time and place never matters. it’s always this: tenderness in its kaleidoscope form. “i love you” in four languages. and in the end, doesn’t that just make the hurt worth it. (even for a pirate.)
