PROD 200 - Film 3 Analysis
Lookbook: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5XAxNq6mBlUTElLcnJyWmV4Nnc/view?usp=sharing
After finishing the rough cut of this third film, I feel as though I was able to push myself harder with this project than with the first two films. I wanted to do something with locations more interesting than my on-campus apartment and found a couple locations that seemed to work well with my story. I also chose to try filming underwater seeing as one of my close friends that happens to be certified as a life guard and a professional diver has a scuba rig that he frequently uses. This posed some clear issues with direction but I think we got a great variety of shots in this unusual setting.
I did experience a tremendous amount of logistic issues regarding scheduling of the shooting. Between actors and locations, it took a great deal of maneuvering to find times that were able to work with everyone necessary. I had issues getting extras for the party scene but consulting with my DP, we simply decided to shoot everything much tighter than previously expected to accommodate for this. I definitely would like to reshoot that sequence if possible in the near future but we will see what comes.
I think I learned a great deal working on this project and look forward to re-editing it with a much more patient eye.

PROD 200 - Short #2
I had some difficulties with my second short, but I’m relatively happy with my final product. While conceptually what I wanted to do with gravity effects weren’t necessarily going to be able to work without prosthetics or industrial grade fans, I feel like the project instead became more of a tonal piece about a fever dream.
Shooting went surprisingly well, with the most time consuming elements being the setting up of the room and the other set dressing we needed to put in place. Editing was the bigger challenge, but I felt like it went in a completely different direction than originally intended afterwards. I felt like actually hearing the song with the picture called for a more contemplative cut with much more focus on the inserts.
After editing and reshoots I hope to have a nicely contained little abstract piece.

PROD 200 - Short #1
I feel as though my first short went far smoother than expected. I wanted to keep the concept as something simple, but I also wanted to play around with the idea of doing some sort of horror short as that’s not something I’ve tried before.
My initial shot list was set for 29 shots, however through quick thinking during the shoot, myself and the DP were able to cut it down to less than half of that to what I would consider better better quality shots. I would have liked to spend more time on lighting, but I will try and focus more so on elements of lighting and the set design in my later projects this semester.
On the whole, I’m happy with how this first cut turned out. Some of the shots are clearly awkward and too long, however once I can start traditionally editing, I can easily (and rightfully) cut about a minute from the run time. Instead of a traditional music track, I ended up going in and out of a longer drone track for this cut to keep it simple. For the final cut, the addition of more subtle cues should help increase the tension. I am excited to see how the rest of the semester plays out.
