Reflection

Before I learned about Communication Design Studies, I thought that Communication Design was designing some posters or logos. But this course opens my vision, in this semester, I learned how to find a design from daily life and use the object around me as my source of inspiration.

In the first project. “hello, my question is...” guides me how to relate the relationship between objects and text. Also, I can use the objects in my daily life to create other designs, such as posters, it has transformed my perception of the object and tried to think about how to create based on the things in front of me.

In addition, during this semester, I began to think about what design is, although I believe there are many answers to this question, and maybe I will overturn the current idea in the future. For the moment, I think the design is equal to solving problems, first from functionality to aesthetics.

Overall, I enjoyed this class very much because it improved my skills and made me think about what design is.

WEEK 12

This is the sample of my final zine. I tried to print it out to see how it looks on papers. The zone contains 16 pages including the cover and back cover (I have made it at last!). The outcome was pretty good and I am going to adjust some minor problems of the layout and design. I have thought about different ways to bind my zine and I have tried these 2 ways: using stapler and using thread+needles. However, I am not sure which way to use at this moment because I do not know which way suits the final zine better.

#week 12 (zine project rationale)

In week 12 tutorial, I submitted my physical zine copy.

I had interviewed my friend who is an artist and architect in the real life. I made a list of various questions then carefully selected 5 critical questions based on his area of specialty. Compared with the last assignment, I managed my limited time more efficiently and made a lot of preparations such as doing zine layout researches, trails printing out and colour scheme tests in order to meet requirements.

In my zine design, I used bright and high-saturated colours to enhance the visual effect and deliver an intense sense of contrast on each page to viewers. At first, I tried to make my zine in Indesign, but after doing a few trails, I found that the colours appeared a distortion by using Indesign, therefore, I decided to make zine by Illustrator page by page in order to ensure the high fidelity of image colours.

I only applied sans-serif typefaces in regular and bold forms in my design because of its modern sense, which was associated with the artist’s painting style. The main design element I used was the geometric lines and shapes, by cooperating with the legible sans-serif typefaces which were arranged in a left-alignment way, forming a neat and readable layout. Additionally, for my physical zine copy, I printed it out in two different versions that one is the wire binding without cover and another is the saddle stitch with die cut cover, then I decided to submit the one with die cut because it looked more like a zine instead of a notebook.

WEEK 13

Finally! I finished the ZINE project and submitted it. In this project, I interviewed my friend - an industrial design student, I am excited to learn some industrial design knowledge in this interview, such as Isometric and perspective. In the process of making ZINE, I learned how to typeset, especially the combination of fonts and pictures.

This video goes over how to make a 8 page zine out of one piece of paper. (sorry about deleting earlier, but I noticed that some of the clips got deleted so I had to go fix that. )

In Type project, my theme is EXIT, so I made a GIF to represent the meaning of the word. In this GIF, E is a door, the letters X, I and T can pass this door. Overall, I think I successfully expressed the meaning of EXIT.

In this poster, I want to express that my inspiration comes from culture. In the middle of the word culture, I filled in some photos of Japanese attractions, which I shot when I was trave in Japan. Also, I took a picture of the Victoria market as the background, and the whole poster meant that the culture from Japan to Melbourne inspired me.

In Personal application icons project, I designed three application icons for music, video and music production. Also, I have used abstract elements for these three icons.
