Final reflective statement

Today was the project exhibition of the final assessment - Ask me anything. I really loved the way how the zines that were created by all year-1 communication design students were shown. Hanging them on the ceiling was an interesting and fresh perspective to look at.

My objectives in taking this course were to know more about design and what is good design. I did gain knowledge about the design history like the early-print, Bauhaus, postmodernism and modernism. However, I am still confused about what is good design. After this course I have unlocked skills like planning, designing layout and zine-making. I wish I could learn more about software like Photoshop and InDesign. During the workshops, I discovered material literacy. Using different materials to form letters helped me to explore my thinking. For example, I have never thought that we can create art or design by writing something with water on the floor. This is really interesting. My greatest achievement in this course was the last project (zine-making). I thought making a zine was not that complicated but I was wrong. It took me a month to do everything. I have learnt so much throughout the process.

Finally, I would like to say thank you to Andy, Karen ann and my classmates. You really helped me a lot for my projects and also my learning process.

Week 13

Look how many zine I have printed out to test and check my design….

During these two weeks, I kept printing out my zine in hardcopy in order to test and refine. I used school printer to print my trials copies. I printed in A6 firstly a few times to make sure the composition was correct, then I printed in my final size A5 to further adjust the design. Sadly, I always find some small errors in my zine and I have to go back to refine again and again…tired…

However!!! These are my final final zine!!!! After so many refinements, I finally made my three final final copies in very refined design (I think it is very refined) and printed in officeworks in good quality papers. I also add a sleeve of cover to make it look more official. I can’t wait to show my zine in the exhibition!!!

A little, short rationale/reflection-

The creative I interview is an artist I’ve been following for a while on weibo, and it was like a dream that she says yes to my interview requirement. So I have taken this zine project very serious and always trying to do the best I can while I was designing and making it. I think I really did pushed myself in this project,

Because my creative, Moonmeer, is an illustration, so my zine is mainly focused on her illustrations, trying to display how beautiful those illustrations are. I admire her work as well as her ability of painting as she is not professionally educated in any art or design, so I think she is incredibly talented in this area. The colour she used in all her works was so balanced and aesthetics that I am trying to imitate it while I was designing.

All the image I used in my zine have authorised by the creative. She was really kind to provide all the works she satisfied the most from her. During the process, I had so much fun when I played around with the design composition and making my own zine. I really appreciate Andy and Karen to have this project to give me a challenge to try to contact an artist that I admire and I really want to thank my creative to provide this opportunity to me to interview her and make this come true. It was a really awesome project and I was enjoying it.

About the magazine

Finally I finished it and printed it out with the 300 gsm uncounted paper ! In my zine I will focus on a graphic designer who works in Tomshi associates. Her name is Camelia Leung and she was born in Guangzhou, China. Initially I was attracted by her ingenious works in a graphic design exhibition in Guangzhou. She really enjoys the design process and has massive passion on expressing her perspectives with various materials and communication methods. Recently she was inspired by the Chinese folk culture and absorbed some iconic elements for creating a set of Chinese red packets. Therefore in this zine I will focus on the traditional culture theme and how does Camelia redesign and reinterpret it. In addition, Camelia thought that she had a pocket in her world in order to collect the inspirations, then I attempted to make a real pocket to express that visually.

I have tried several different layouts for my zine，and this is the final version. The front page is connected with the back page to form the letter ‘q’ and ‘A’，which tells people that this is an interview zine. I put one question and answer in each inside page with the related illustrations from my interviewee.

This is my first time to make a zine, so I feel a little bit difficult at the beginning when I use the Indesign. I also search for many examples of zine layout to learn how other people design the zine. Overall, I am satisfied with my work.

Final!

Week 13 is submission week!

It’s how my final zine looks like. I changed the title of it and put a better title. On the previous post, I mentioned that I revised some parts of the zine. Keeping the typeface was a good decision and changing the size of the typeface was the right decision. The smaller typeface was cute but it’s making the reader hard to read the pieces of information there. Also, it’s a nice balance between the text and the images of my creative’s artwork. I deleted the unnecessary parts make the zine looks much better than before. Although it’s not a very good design, I learned lots of new things just by making a zine.

WEEK 13

This is the final zine! I have changed the cover into 2 different layers: one on a clear film and the other one on 200 gsm glossy paper. I made like this because I think this looks more interesting and fresh than just printing them all on papers. I have met difficulties during the process. For example, I did not know that the printers cannot print white on the clear film and I had to print it again, so I have changed it into yellow instead. Trimming the zine was challenging for me as well because the papers are really thick together and I spent some time to do that. At last, I'm satisfied with the outcome!

WEEK 12

This is the sample of my final zine. I tried to print it out to see how it looks on papers. The zone contains 16 pages including the cover and back cover (I have made it at last!). The outcome was pretty good and I am going to adjust some minor problems of the layout and design. I have thought about different ways to bind my zine and I have tried these 2 ways: using stapler and using thread+needles. However, I am not sure which way to use at this moment because I do not know which way suits the final zine better.

Packaging for Taresso by Luminous

The method of decaffeinating, the process of extracting caffeine from coffee using purified water without added solvents, was the main inspiration for the Taresso decaf packaging design. Visualizing this process, the graphic element is based on the repetition the caffeine undergoes when it is gradually removed from the fruit stones, whilst the color palette underlines the water as a basic pillar of the procedure.

WEEK 11

Today I have experimented different ways of making a zine. This is one of the ways that I have learnt in class, which is an 8-page zine that we can put a poster or some images at the back of it. Also, I did some layout drafts as well. So that I will know which way is the best for my final zine.

This is another zine sample with layout drafts. I did it in 16 pages becoz I wanted to know what to put on the pages if I do a 16-page one. I think doing 16 pages is more interesting but I am not sure if I can do it before the deadline.

WEEK 10

Finally I have learnt how to make a zine on InDesign software. I have learnt how to edit pages and some shortcuts on the keyboard as well. Using the template of layout provided, I have made my very first zine for practice. It was quite challenging to adjust the size of the images to the right position, because I seldom use InDesign to create something. Also, when it came to the real printed version of the zine, some pages were not really fit. Now, I know how can I make a better one for the final zine. Just keep practicing!

WEEK 9

We did an interesting activity today, which is cutting letter forms out from photocopies of magazines. We had to find letters from the shapes of the images and paste them on a paper. I have done A, V, D, O, S and T and I feel great about them. It was so much fun for this collage activity. The only difficulty was some images doesn't have any letter forms and we tried our best to find them and finished the task.

After that we learnt how to make models of zines for the project. It was interesting when we opened up the folding papers and we found out that the drawings were separated on different pages.

Architectural Logos by Counter-Print

WEEK 8

After the mid semester break, we keep working on the assignment. But first, we had to find some letters or numbers around the RMIT campus. I had found some letters but numbers were hard to find because of the curves in their structures. After that we uploaded the pictures to Google drive and we made a new series of typography.
