10/22/13 in San Francisco's Financial District.
Chris Yoder is in his third year at UC Berkeley, and reports for the student newspaper, The Daily Californian. On September 30, 2013, he was at school to report on a power outage. There was an explosion on campus, and his story changed drastically.
I found Chris through Twitter, and he told me his story of what happened that night.
(The photo attached is a picture of the grate where the explosion happened, taken about two weeks later)
Victor Silvestri is a 25 year-old student at the Academy of Art, studying film editing. He is originally from New Jersey, and has been in living in West Portal for the last three years.
I met Victor when we were roommates two years ago. Strange things tend to happen to him, and on one night when we were going to meet for a drink, he called and said he was going to be late because "something crazy had just happened."
When he finally did show up, he told me how he had been walking behind an old woman carry groceries, saw her trip, and decided to help her. This is his story of that night.

Scientists at Oxford University have found that whisky has a different taste depending on where it’s sipped.
The idea came from the experience of many travelers. Go someplace warm and sunny, and the food and drink are breathtaking, explains Charles Spence, lead author of the study. Bring some home, though, and it never tastes as good, he says.

Hello, Internet! (And specifically, Tumblr). I'm Emily, and I'm a journalism student at San Francisco State University. I created this blog for my Digital Newsgathering Class, JOUR 226, so a lot of my posts will be assignment related. There might be some photography thrown in once in a while, and some puns or reblogs of cute cat pictures, but this is mostly supposed to be professional.
As an aspiring journalist, I read a lot of news. One of the most interesting articles I've come across lately is this, a man who rigged some rafts to his bike and pedaled from Oakland to San Francisco across the bay. (I lack the engineering skills to do the same thing, but if there's another BART strike next month I might resort to swimming.)
Also, as someone who's recently started to use and appreciate Twitter, I found this article interesting, because it shows what tweets can potentially reveal about a place or how data collected from Twitter can be wrong or taken out of context.
One of the coolest things I've heard this week is a stream of my favorite band's new album, Dr. Dog's "B-Room."
And finally, this is a "self portrait" I took for a photojournalism class this summer:
