The people involved in making Pier 1 a success
From the demolition of the old pier to the construction of the new one, the opening of Pier 1 was a huge project made possible by our staff’s large range of expertise. We hear from the people involved just how they made it happen…

I was responsible for all aspects of commercial management including budget, cost, risk and pricing of change and commercial reporting. It was so important to have a joined-up approach and that every member of the team and their expertise was intrinsically linked. We could not have delivered what we have with a silo mentality.

My responsibilities on site were to ensure the works were carried out in a safe manner. I worked with technical leaders to arrange for benchmark progress and ensure expectations were being met at different stages of the project. This was my first job in construction since leaving university and I’m proud to have been part of it.

I’ve worked on the project since 2011, ensuring the design and engineering met both the brief and business requirements. One of
the biggest challenges was
the footprint, which was
constrained on all four sides, as
well as the height of the roof. In
the end we literally built
within millimetres of
the maximum size
that could actually
be accommodated in
the footprint. I was
so proud to witness
the first passengers
arrive.

I oversaw the construction of civil and structural elements of the new pier and made sure that what was being built was done safely and to airport standards. There have been many interesting challenges on the project – I helped coordinate a structural load transfer over a live sub station, for example. It’s great to see the finished building and passengers using the facility.

I was responsible for everything outside the Pier 1 building. The work required was completed
thanks to detailed planning, design and construction.
There are five new aircraft stands linked to the new pier by air bridges. We had to construct them and build the new taxiways while ensuring Pier 2 stayed operational throughout.

I oversaw all construction aspects, which included health and safety, quality, production, resolving issues and feeding back to
the designers about areas where the design didn’t work with the constructed
structure. The South Terminal has been my building project for the past 20 years and this is just the latest project with my thumbprint on – one I’m very proud of.

The dedication and determination of my team is what set this project apart. There was a collective will to succeed. It is hugely satisfying to see the pier, airfield and baggage system in operation.

My role involved schedule management and meant I had to be close to
all aspects of project delivery including time, cost, risk, change and engineering. I’m grateful that we had a great team with extensive new and old experience that helped drive delivery and maintained focus despite the overrunning of works.

I was responsible for managing the construction contracts on the Pier 1 project. Contract change has been relatively small given the size of the project, meaning the majority of the project was delivered as planned.
The outcome is a modern, very user-friendly facility that passengers will enjoy using for years to come.

I was there representing the passengers, the airlines, the handling agents and all other operational aspects. I ensured that the building worked for everyone and was practical for the business traveller, the young child, the passenger in the wheelchair and so on.

I assisted the Senior Planner with the programming and identifying the delays and risk. While the project faced many challenges and proved stressful at times, the team maintained a positive outlook and remained focused towards completion.
For the younger members of the team, not only have we been given the opportunity to work on such a fantastic project that will change the way Gatwick operates, we also got to work alongside and be mentored by members with many years of experience from all disciplines who have supported and helped shape our careers.

I was the project lead in 2009/10 and saw the opportunity of combining a state-of-the-art pier with a new baggage hall.
The new technology, size and complexity are bigger than anything we have done and it has been essential
that thorough testing of the system has taken place to ensure it works as promised.
I’m proud to say I was around for the first sketches of initial design and there was no way
I wasn’t going to be there to see the first passengers’ bags going down the system – I just had to be.
