Since the weather is starting to get wintery where I am, I'm reminding everyone to have an emergency kit either in their car or in your bag at all times.

Cold weather is one of the biggest killers in history, especially when people have gotten stuck. And I know this is the 21st century, but people are still dying every winter because they weren't prepared.

• You're going to want a blanket (even if it's just one of those silver emergency blankets) to hold as much body heat as you can.

• You also need some hand warmers. (There are chemical ones and electric ones) Your fingers are going to get cold before the rest of you, even if you have gloves, and you will want to be able to use your phone or tools.

• Then you want something to eat like granola bars and some water. Something easy that doesn't need to be cooked but high in calories because you'll be shivering and that takes way more energy than you think. At least enough to keep you alive for a day.

• Keep some emergency medications. Basic Tylenol, ibuprofen, and the like, but also at least a day's worth of your daily medications. Make sure everything is clearly labeled for emergency responders if you're unconscious or unable to communicate clearly.

• You're going to want tools for your car. Some extra gas or oil don't hurt either, but you definitely want the basics to fix something wrong with the tires. I also recommend an emergency jump starter. Cold tends to sap your batteries way faster, so keep extra batteries for your flashlight.

• And on that same subject: Charging brick for your phone. You can find dozens of them with varying wattage and plugs at any Walmart or Best Buy.

• Lastly, you will definitely want to have emergency contact and identification papers. In my state, it's required that everyone 16+ has an ID on them for safety purposes, but you will also want a list of emergency contacts and insurance jic

This is a good list for everyone, whether you drive or not. (I personally take the bus and will be keeping these things on hand because I have been stuck at a bus depot or just on the bus when it was cold out and am not doing that again)

Adjust it to what you need. Add some games or toys if you have kids or some candies if you have low blood sugar. I will be adding a sudoku book and a pen, because I get bored and have ADHD and sudoku keeps me entertained. I also will probably be getting a second charging brick because I use my phone for work and don't want it dying on me otw home.

If you're like me and have a service animal, make sure they have their own little kit. (My dog has little pouches on her vest so I keep her things in there and she can snuggle in my blanket with me)

From Sunday through Wednesday here, an Arctic vortex is arriving with frigid temperatures ❄️🥶❄️. It may even snow. It's been raining off & on with a bit of sleet mixed in.

Yesterday evening, we bought supplies (bottled water, extra toilet paper) and more food since there will be road closures.

I'm going to cut my three marigold flowers in bloom since they will inevitably freeze outside. I'll put them in a vase. I do have more seedlings in my windowsill (calendula, marigold etc etc) to replace the less hardy plants in the ground right now. I will cover them, but I don't know if it will be enough against the icy winds.
