"Do you think we should get a pet?" it's a question that comes out of the blue from Naoto who's currently lazing about on the couch. Another rare evening in which she's not working on a sky-high pile of work. Instead, she's browsing the feed of one of her social media accounts. "Something small, maybe. Like a ferret or a lizard."

Kanji is relaxed on the other end of the couch, Naoto’s feet in his lap. They’re enjoying a wonderful evening in with no responsibilities. She’s taking the rare indulgence of just playing on her phone, and Kanji is working his way through the next issue of the manga he’s been getting from the library. In the background, another Junes ad plays in the background. The jingle will certainly haunt him in his dreams until he dies.

When Naoto breaks the silence, he nearly drops the book right in his lap, too damn easily startled. “A pet?” It’s not something he’d considered, but it’s not something he’s opposed to either.

He hums, considering it. Ferrets smelled real bad from what he knew, and lizards weren’t very cuddly... “Maybe we should check out one of those cat cafes Souji keeps tryin’ to drag us to.” Then they could adopt a rescue at the very least. And cats basically took care of themselves, right?

Maybe he could knit the cat a sweater.

“But if you want one of those instead, that’s cool too. I just dunno anything about takin’ care of ‘em.” He shrugs, but gives her a smile. Owning a pet together sounds... nice.

It's a good thing that Naoto has taken to wearing platform boots because it makes things so much easier. Such as leaning closer to place a small kiss on Kanji's cheek before pointing at the mistletoe hanging above them. "Happy holidays, Kanji-kun."

She’s been wearing them for a long time, now, so Kanji doesn’t know why he still gets thrown off by Naoto inching up much closer to him in height. He’s contemplating exactly this when she comes over and presses a small, soft kiss to his cheek.

Well, that’s just unfair. He’d protest if his face wasn’t so red and his mouth wasn’t hanging up like some weird fish. Instead, he has another beat of quiet before he can find his words again. They’re not even hard worlds, just a ‘you too!’ or ‘Happy holidays, Naoto-kun.’

Literally anything.

His brain chooses that moment to fizzle out entirely and leave him to his own devices, so he keeps himself leaning down, not aware of his movements until he’s planting a kiss right to the tip of her... very very cute nose. “You too.” And of course, his voice cracks, because he isn’t embarrassed enough.
