Off On An Adventure

John stood there and continued to pout at Jade. “I am so manly, the strongman here is jealous of all this man.” He held out an arm to show off his muscles. There was a good amount of muscle mass in his arm, but not as much as he bragged he had. He was just exaggerating.

With a roll of her eyes, Jade nodded. “Of course you are, how could I be so silly as to doubt you.” Jade had actually seen the strongman in passing a little while ago, so she was pretty sure her brother, regardless of how high and mighty he thought himself to be, he was very wrong about one thing.

“See, there you go. You just needed to stop doubting and believe in me!” He chuckled and put the arm he was flexing down. “So what have you been doing here without me?” He had to admit, he was kind of bored, he could only imagine what people here did for fun.

"Well it took a while to get here you know! So mostly travelling, and it took forever!" Jade sighed, sounding exasperated, but still smiling. "But after that I met some people, hung out with a mermaid, talked to a few people. There's some really amazing people working here! And a couple of nut jobs..."

Jade: Meet the lion tamer

Maybe it was her imagination, or maybe she was just in a strange place, but Jade felt like every time she took a step around the carnival, the place got bigger. As though all of a sudden, there were more tents and more people. But she was pretty sure that was her rather overactive imagination playing tricks on her, or maybe her feet protesting against all the walking in highly uncomfortable shoes (What on earth was the point of shoes not made for walking? She'd been pondering that for a while, ever since her feet started aching).

Along with the place, seemingly, getting bigger, Jade constantly seemed to be lost. She'd stumbled into people, walked into rooms and tents she really shouldn't have and almost been attacked by a particularly angry man. But thus far, this was probably the most interesting place she'd ended up: with the lions. And their surprisingly little trainer, a girl who didn't look very much older than Jade herself. "Excuse me?"

“Eaten by a lion?” John chuckled. “You have quite an imagination but I appreciate that you were worried. Also, I can totally agree that our parents are batshit crazy and it would be really cool for us to be here together!” Usually it would be the brother that would be protective of and worried about his sister, but it seemed as if she was taking his job. It was going to be cool having her with him though.

Jade chirped with a small laugh, tucking a loose lock of hair out of her face. "Glad you think so, cus I plan on sticking around a while. This place is much more interesting than home. Have you talked to anyone? I met a mermaid this morning John, a mermaid! A real one!"

“Wait, you have been following me?” He thought for a second but didn’t break his wide grin. “I have been wandering around this place for well over two hours, I wish I found you sooner!” He had to admit, it was kind of creepy walking around an “abandoned” carnival. Well it looked abandoned.

Jade offered a shrug in response. "I got a little worried, so I decided to see if you were alright. And I was getting a tad stir crazy at home. I say it with all the love in the world, but our parents are maddening at times." She clasped her hands behind her back, smiling brightly. "Well I've been here a little while, I didn't think I'd ever be able to find you. Thought maybe you'd gotten lost on the way, or that you'd gotten eaten by a lion or something!" Perhaps that was an over-exaggeration, but in her mind there was no one more likely to get into trouble than her big brother.

John turned when he heard his name. Someone here knows me? He thought. But when he saw who was calling his name, he remembered that his sister, Jade, was here as well. “Jade!” He ran towards her and gave her a hug. He had to admit, he was a bit nervous to meet up with his sister. He hadn’t seen her in ages. John pushed the thought of reuniting with his sister out of his mind so it wouldn’t make him as nervous as he was. Well that plan didn’t work.

No sooner had she walked into the space, than she'd been half tackled by her brother. "Whoa, easy there!" Jade laughed out faintly, gingerly returning the hug. She supposed it had been a while since they'd seen each other, a couple of weeks maybe? A month? Heck, that was probably the longest they'd been apart their entire lives. "It's only me."

She pulled back, smiling sweetly. So far so good. "Surprise!" Jade chirped. "You know I had an awfully tough time tracking you down, I mean who knew this place was so big. Met a lot of strange people on the way too. But enough about me, how are you? Not a single word since you decided to come work here, I was starting to get worried."

Jade was not the sort of girl who considered herself afraid of many things, in fact there was probably a very long list of things that she wasn't afraid of but should have been. And yet, she was finding it rather nerve-racking to go find her brother of all people, someone she'd know for as long as she'd been alive, and spent a good portion of her life with. But such is life, and such is fear, she supposed. Not rational or reasonable at all.

As long as he didn't try and send her home, back to another summer of floating about in boredom at the house, she'd be fine. Or at least that was what she told herself as she stepped into a small tent she'd been directed towards by a rather odd person (Who was she kidding, this whole place was made and lived in by odd people), meekly calling out; "Hello? John?" When had he become so frightful? Honestly, what was she expected, him to bite her or something?

Jade: Try and not get lost.

Vriska walked in, practically strutting in and saying, “You know, Feferi, it’s not nice to ignore someone for—” And she stopped dead in her tracks. “Hello,” she said stiffly. “I’m Vriska. Who are you?” One pair of arms rested below her hips and she cocked her head to one side. She knew how she looked to the gaping girl: She looked gaunt and undernourished. She also looked positively freaky and over all, not very neat. Her disheveled form stood out like a sore thumb among manicured fingernails.

“Feferi, what have you been up to lately?” Vriska forced a smile. Better now than later.

Feferi bobbed at the top of her tank pulling her hair over one shoulder, running her fingers through it a couple of times. She could see Vriska off to one side and a girl she had never seen before. “I’m not ignoring anyone Vriska, I was just underwater and couldn’t hear you calling through the glass and don’t be mean to guests. It’s not nice.” Feferi gave a smirk in Vriska’s direction before turning her attention to the other girl.

“Hello there! I’m Feferi what’s your name?” She gave the girl one of her smiles she used for her shows.

Jade spun on her heel, turning to look at the girl who'd snuck in behind her. "Oh! Hello there, Miss um...Vriska, was it?" It turned out that this Vriska girl was almost as shocking in her appearance as the mermaid--Feferi, she'd said. Extra sets of arms and a look in her eyes that could kill.

"I'm Jade. Jade Egbert, I just got here." She replied, smiling faintly at the woman, then turning to do the same to the mermaid. "It's nice to meet you, Miss Feferi. Pardon my staring, it's just...well, neither of you are exactly the most average of people."

“God forbid I should want to walk on a walking path! Call the police, a regular crook I must be.” She drawled, both sarcastically and angrily. It, of course, hadn’t yet occurred to her that a lot of the people there were crooks. She’d only met a few, and aside from weird, she didn’t have a damn thing to say against any of them. But this guy was hardly friendly and he looked like the sort that would attack her at any given moment, when he decided he’d had enough of her snide comments. Unfortunately for Jade, she really couldn’t bring herself to stop any of it.

“Um…” That stopped her dead in her metaphorical tracks. Honestly, she had no idea how to explain her situation to anyone. What was she now? A runaway? All she’d wanted to do was find her brother, and last she heard, he was headed to this carnival. (Of course, she’d yet to find him and was beginning to wonder if he’d just fallen off the face of the earth). But she supposed in the long run, having a job there couldn’t hurt any, especially if she wanted to stick around. “Yeah, I suppose I am.”

“Are you trying to be funny with me?” he glared at her almost taking a step forward but the then stopping himself so he ended up looking like he tripped over something while standing.

“Hah. Well a lotta people end up here, what’cha want to work as?” he tried to remember if he had paper or a pen on him, but he was pretty sure he hadn’t. Yeah. Quick check of his pockets revealed that there were a lot of things in them but none of them identified at writing utensils. He could easily just tell the girl to do whatever job she planned on getting by simply sending her to it, just tell the ringmaster greetings from him, but that was boring. Making people sign things and seeing them getting uncomfortable about that was so much more fun. It was also a lot more “legal” whatever that meant here

"What do you think?" She snapped back at him, cocking an eyebrow at the man. While normally, she might have been a little more worried (Not much more, she had more guts than brains), the guy could barely stay on his feet, much less do her any real harm. Well, that's what she was telling herself anyway.

"Anything. Whatever I can." In terms of marketable skills, Jade was coming up blank. What was considered a useful skill at a carnival? Probably not anything she could do, aside from her shooting maybe. Was that useful? Or marketable at the least? "I just need to be able to stick around. I can shoot, if that helps."

Jade: Try and not get lost.

“That’s the spirit!” Vriska cried, pulling her partner forward. “Kanaya is a seamstress, and a very talented one at that. I should know. I need the help,” Vriska held out her arms to show the sleeves to Jade. A lot of people who come here want something, and then when they get it, they leave.” Vriska pulled the little girl over to the fishtank tent.

She called into the flap, “FEFERI? CRONUS? ARE YOU TWO IN THERE?” Vriska’s arms felt a sense of insecurity, and she waited patiently (albeit frightened) for one of the fishies to call back. “They should be in there,” she murmured to herself.

Feferi had been off to the side outside of her tank. She was sitting on the ground plucking blades of grass out one at a time. Merely a change of scenery from being inside the tank. When she heard Vriska call for her she scrambled up and ran for the tank careful not the trip over herself. Vriska doesn’t know about her legs yet and she didn’t want her finding out about it this way.

She ducked behind her tank and stripped her clothes quickly disregarding all thought to fold them. She climb up the ladder and dove into the water headfirst. She felt her legs come together and her elegant tail push through the water. Making her way back up to the surface she called back to her. “Yea! I’m here Vriska! Long time no see!” Feferi hadn’t noticed the other person with her in her haste to get back in the tank.

Jade, being the semi sheltered--though rather open minded--girl she was, hardly expected to be introduced to an eight armed woman, who simply insisted she meet someone else. Someone that she had just learned was either a mermaid, like from one of those silly children's books, or a very talented costume maker. But she was inclined to believe the former, however whimsical it may seem.

"Oh my..." She cautiously approached the tank, looking curiously at its occupant. "And here I thought that the carnival was all tricks and silliness..." How wrong she was. Because of everyone she had encountered since arriving, not one of them had been anything close to a fake like her parents always said carnival workers were.

“Well it’s not my fucking fault you’re standing in the middle of the way”, with the bottle in his hand he waved at the path* that held enough space to let an elephant through, making it obvious that the girl had no fault at all this and the whole thing could have gone without any interaction if he’d just walked a few meters left. But hell Slick would stab someone and then tell them it’s their own fucking fault, for not being knife proof or some shit. In his mind, whatever happened it was always the other persons fault and if it was something bad that happened to the other they also had deserved it.

“What”, he actually looked surprised as the sentence went through his slightly dizzy mind. “You actually want a job here? So you’re on your way to the ringleader, yeah?”, most of the time Slick didn’t bother with the kids that got jobs here over the holiday, the tiny amounts of money they received for their work were nothing but a few odd numbers. He let Karkat employ them and that was it, but if one of them was right in front of him he could technically take care of it too.

There were probably a lot of terrifying things on this carnival; especially if you were easily scared. Spades Slick could be under most circumstances be seen as one of these things and right now was no exception to this. He hadn’t slept this night, mostly because he woke up somewhere around 5PM but he was still tired and on his way to his much needed bed. Most of his waking time had spent running around hitting people on the head, checking that everything ran smoothly and the later (or well… earlier) it got he got more pissed at everything until he ended his working day with a loud rant at how everyone here was a little piece of shit. Now after acquiring a bottle of something that didn’t taste as bad as it smelled but still tasted like shit he was slowly walking over the carnival grounds towards his accommodation.

Being exhausted and slightly drunk he didn’t pay any attention to his surroundings, it was so early in the morning there was no one around anyway. And with that thought in mind he ran into something. For a second he thought it was a tree until he realized that trees usually were taller and didn’t have so much hair. “Fuck! Why’r yer staying in my way”, he glared at what he realized to be a girl in front of him. “Ain’t it to fucking early for non carnies to be here.”

Jade, being in the jumpy sort of state she was, almost tripped over her own feet in a panicked moment of complete clumsiness. It took her a moment longer than she was proud of to get herself back in order enough to not shriek and panic and a million other things that were probably not helping the fact that a short angry looking man who smelt of liquor had run into her. She flushed with embarrassment and held up her hands in a gesture of mock surrender. "Sorry! I didn't--hang on." Jade's face scrunched up into a frown. "You ran into me! That means you're the one at fault here!"

It occurred to her later that maybe sometimes she had more guts than smarts, but this guy was being really darn rude. "It is actually, but I'm not here to be a customer." Not that it was any of his business why she was there, especially after he walked into her and had the audacity to say it was her fault!

The thing about summer was that time seemed to just blur into one long sunny day for Jade, she had little idea how long she'd been hanging around the carnival. Long enough that she knew the names of just about everyone, and the daily schedule. But not long enough that she'd actually done anything about her plans on getting a job. Well she'd get around to that, for the moment she was just enjoying not being stuck at home.

That being said, she was getting pretty bored of just drifting around, not really talking to anyone. She had, after all, arrived for some excitement and as nice as the summer haze was, she was getting stir crazy. It was pretty early in the morning, but she was wide awake, out on a morning walk. The air was still crisp and for the most part, the whole carnival was quiet, almost too quiet in her opinion. It was usually so busy, or at least it had been the last little while she'd been there.

"A carnival ghost town...what could be more terrifying..." She mumbled to herself, stuffing her hands as deeply into the pockets of her coat as they would go, her mind drifting to all those stories about killer clowns she'd heard when she was younger. Yes, she decided, carnivals were quite terrifying in the earlier hours. God help her if someone snuck up on her.

Jade didn't know how she'd been running around the place for so long without running into her brother at all. But she'd sort of been just wandering, wasting time and having a bit of fun. Eventually, she probably did have to actually find John, lest he get a panicked letter from their parents and start worrying about her. Besides, she really didn't need him listening to their parents on the subject of her little trip, they'd say ridiculous things like she'd run away and that they were so worried about her, blah blah blah.

Well, alright, she technically had run away. And they probably were worried. But she'd gone to see John, so she was sure she was pretty safe. Besides, everyone else she'd spoken to seemed nice enough. What harm could there be in staying a while? She'd write to her parents soon, tell them she was safe and was spending the summer with John. And not cooped up at home, listening to her mother tell her how utterly inappropriate it was for a young lady like herself to show such an interest in physics. Psh. Showed what she knew.

She'd asked someone where to find him, and had been directed to a tent which she hoped was the right one. Because if she stumbled into the wrong place one more time, she was going to lose her mind. "John?"

Jade: Try and not get lost.

Jade looked the woman over a few times, a little perplexed, but more curious than anything else. Extra arms…she’d never seen anything like that before. But regardless, Jade reached out and shook her hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Vriska. I’m Jade! Jade Egbert.”

What was she looking for? A job? Her brother? Something to do? Heck, she didn’t really know. “Truth be told, I haven’t got a clue what I’m looking for! Maybe just looking for some excitement!” She was grinning, looking rather silly as she did. Oh well, she supposed a lot of rather silly and strange people wandered in there, she was after all talking to someone with extra arms and a devilish smile.

Vriska cocked her head. “Is that so? Well, welcome Jade Egbert, to our humble carnival. Did you know,” she continued, her grin growing, “that carnival and carnivore share the root “carni” meaning “meat” in Latin? Carnival’s used to be places full of… fresh meat,” Vriska stage whispered. “But I’m quite sure you’ll be alright. You seem like you have a brain in that head of yours.”

“Behind you,” Vriska put a hand on the girl’s shoulder. “you’ll see the freak tent. That’s my abode, along with any kids who happen to look a little off. Behind it are the fish tanks. Eridan is crazy little clownfish, but Feferi is pretty nice. There’s a new fish, Cronus, but I have a feeling he’d hit on you. You’re pretty, so there ya go.” Vriska pointed to a row of trailers. “Kanaya lives around there, as do some other acts. You should meet them, especially Kanaya. She’s wonderful.”

“If you need anything, don’t be afraid to ask. I don’t bite very hard.” Vriska hooked her arm in Jade’s. “Now. Where to?”

“I didn’t know that actually.” Latin had never been her best subject, she knew some basic phrases, but that was mainly from sciences. “I hope I am. But what’s the worst that could happen?” Silly question, all of a sudden, Jade could think of at least seventeen things that could go wrong in the next ten minutes.

“Kanaya? What does she do? I mean, she does work here, right?” There seemed to be a lot of people coming and going, she couldn’t tell who was a worker, who was a customer and who was just stumbling through like she was. Jade grinned brightly at her new acquaintance. “Anywhere. Everywhere! I don’t care!”

Vriska strolled in with Jade on her arm. THe mermaid was as beautiful as ever, just as excited and just as… why were the clothes on the ground back there?

Not one for intruding on other people’s business (that was a LIE), Vriska put one hand on Jades back and pushed her toward the mermaid tank. “Jade, this is our beautiful Feferi. Feferi, this is on of the new kids, Jade Egbert.” Her arms were behind her back so that Feferi would not stare at her arms this time around. Vriska made a mental note to ask Fef about the clothes later. They were in company.
