“wait wait wait, are you… are you flirting with me?” Nathan asks, eyes wide as Duke rolls his eyes and throws his arms up exaggeratedly.
“Yes! I’ve been flirting with you since high school Nathan come on!” The pirate sighs looking anywhere but Nathan. The cop feels his heart flutter, he’s had feelings for the other man for well years now but he didn’t have the faintest idea the feelings were mutual.He figured the dislike he pushed so strongly towards Duke to distract himself from how the slightly taller man’s laughter warmed his chest had prevented such a thing from ever happening. Now hearing the charming man’s confession he doesn’t think he can be blamed for his actions.
“Okay you’re quieter than usual please just say s-” Duke’s self conscious rant is cut off by a pair of soft lips he never thought he’d feel on his own. Struggling to remain standing by the power behind the kiss he grabs onto the desk with one hand and wraps the other around the cop’s waist, scared that if he lets go it’ll all have been a dream, it is Haven after all.
“I like you too,” Nathan whispers breathlessly after pulling away enough to look into those warm brown eyes. “I mean I know you didn’t say that you like me but you’ve been flirting with me and so I-” thankfully it was his time to get cut off, feeling the goatee scrape gently on his skin as his lips are captured in a sweet kiss. He puts his hands on the other man’s neck and wants to laugh as he gently shapes patterns on the soft skin with his thumbs. He could always feel Duke, never understood why but it’s part of why he pushed him away, now it’s all clicking in place.
It’s always been Duke, it’ll always be Duke and the revelation is enough for Nathan to pull away again, willing himself to drown in the happiness filling him all the way from his toes he sees mirrored on the slightly taller man.
“You wanna grab drinks later?” He smiles and the answering laugh is more than enough, he sees Duke’s eyes crinkle adorably when he looks at him, smile never leaving that beautiful face. “I’d love to detective.” He winks and for the first time in a long time Nathan is actually looking forward to leaving work..
