smiling friends s3 was the worst so far i'm sorry 😭 the animation is fucking incredible and i'm so happy for them clearly having a larger budget to do literally whatever they want, because some of the sequences/visual gags have been stunning. the creativity throughout the entire season was top-notch.
but the jokes themselves just didnt land as much as the first 2 seasons, and that matters more to me than the bumps in animation & storytelling quality idk. overall it def wasnt a weak season by TV standards but for SF standards, it has less rewatchability for me and made me laugh the least /shrug
rb this to add that i know i'm in the minority here for thinking s3 was the weakest but i'm glad zach n michael arent willing to push the show past its prime. to me, the burnout was kind of evident in how different s3 felt comedically, compared to the first 2 seasons. while i'm sad there wont be any more SF, it's so refreshing to see showrunners who actually care more about the integrity of their show than $$ and maintaining relevancy by squeezing every last drop out of it for 20+ years lol

yaoi and nostalgia aside, avgn & nc pioneered the "comedic game/film review show" genre on youtube (honestly i would even extend that to the creation of let's plays as well) and a lot of their stuff still holds up really well nearly 20 years later

Tips for writing RPF? Specifically, writing the people themselves? I’ve thought of writing OneyPlays RPF, but I’m not sure how to write the people, as I’m afraid of writing them “inaccurately”.
first off, i'm flattered you came to me for writing advice! 🫶
this got longer than anticipated so my answer is under the cut
i'd say watch, read, and listen to as much as you can, and just write as you normally would. i kinda chose chris as my go-to POV to write since i feel i relate to him the most, and usually go off what he's revealed publicly mixed with lots of creative liberties and my own projection filling in the gaps. for me, it's less about portraying a 1:1 replica of what i see on oneyplays or sleepycast or old skits & videos (esp since there's ALWAYS gonna be a certain level of insincerity), and more about writing my own interpretation of the "personas" the guys put on, if that makes sense.
for example, when i write chris' current headspace, i try not to base it off info from his sleepycast/ng/early OP days simply bc a LOT can change in 10+ years. preferences, kinks, behaviors, mannerisms, beliefs, all that shit can change drastically between the ages of 23 & 35, ykwim? so i'm more interested in writing how his mindset could've potentially shifted/grown since his younger days, especially within the context of his back pain and the emotional repression he's recently talked about.
i wont lie, OP was actually my first taste of writing rpf lol. i've been writing fics about fictional characters for years and even drew rpf fanart when i was in middle school (mostly avgnc, mattrey, and some of the jackass guys 😭) but had never written rpf for basically the same reason as you. i was worried about portraying them "wrong" or "inaccurately" or w/e.
but i realized that at the end of the day, i dont know any of these guys personally (certainly not well enough to correctly psychoanalyze them in the first place lmao), so obsessing over how "accurate" i was with how chris oneyplays and dave fnf jerk each other off was kind of silly 😅
the funniest thing about dave being the designated "gen z brainrot memeslop" guy is that not only is he NOT gen z, but he's not even the youngest member on the channel
a lot of people, esp on twitter & the sub, think that chris gave up on bowlbo a long time ago and is just refusing to call the project dead (which doesnt make sense to me tbh bc it's not like it was ever kickstarted or crowd-funded; if it really was dead, there's no real pressure to lie to fans about it or "pretend" he was still working on it or smthn), but i personally think it has more to do with his perfectionism.

he mentioned that the game was initially meant to be way more simple and was genuinely supposed to just be a funny basic platformer that wouldnt take long to finish, which was why he released the trailer when he did (tho i have my own lil game theory on why he was so trigger-happy with announcing bowlbo stuff in 2019-2020 specifically), but it became more complex over time, and was something he grew to care a lot about.
atp i think he actually is working on it in his free time, but his obsession with making it "perfect" might be what's holding things up. especially since the more time that passes, the more difficult it's gonna be to live up to expectations, which would mean trying even harder to perfect it, which takes more time, until it's an endless cycle.
i once read art advice zach gave to a fan (either on twitter or during a reddit AMA, i dont remember) to draw shit even if you think it's "bad" just so it can exist, and worry less about making sure it's "good enough."
but chris seems to hold the opposite philosophy, that if you're going to release anything less than your absolute best, it's not worth releasing at all. and on paper, that sounds logical, but those standards could quickly become unattainable and could end up roadblocking projects in the long run.
every time i see someone comment on chris' droopy eyes i think of that old update video he animated where he's pretending to be an angry fan who screams "MAKE MORE LEO & SATAN YOU FAT DROOPY-EYED RETARD" 😭
