No disrespect and I’m not trying to blatantly doubt that he is, but where in the canon does it say Dirk is gay? It’s been a while since I’ve read it so I might just be blanking
I’m gonna do a whole Big Post on this because I have a doc on hand about it, so I may as well post it. But if you don’t feel like reading the whole thing: Large parts of his arc revolve around being gay, there’s no other way to read him.
Dirk is only interested in guys. He is homosexual/romantic. This has been confirmed so many times and not just in throw-away lines but in a key part of his character. By ignoring this you are also directly ignoring his character arc and struggles as a boy who exclusively loves boys. Yes, I can back this up.
First of all, this right here is the biggest part of why the whole “oh he’s not homo he doesn’t like labels” argument comes from:
Yes, it’s true, Dirk doesn’t want to be called gay. What Dirk is saying here is that he believes that people should be allowed to love who they love and not have it be “a thing”, basically what troll society is, seeing as they do not have a word for “homosexual” but homosexuals do exist, like Kanaya who is a confirmed lesbian. Remember, Dirk lives in a society ruled by the empress of all trolls who embed many troll customs to earth before the extinction of humans. Seeing parallels between troll culture and Roxy and Dirk is very common, for example.
Dirk and Roxy are both very ware of troll culture, Dirk has most likely done a lot more research on it, given that he’s always fuck-deep in conspiracies and history, that’s most likely where he got the idea of “it shouldn’t be a thing” However he only likes boys.
And we can see the word “Gay” has lost all the meaning it once had. In fact, Dirk uses the word to insult Avatar, saying what Jake just said about those blue furries was “So gay.”. Dirk doesn’t take the world literally in any way shape or form, he just doesn’t see it as “A thing.”
I guess this is what you refer to as a “throwaway line” but it’s actually very important given the abusive nature of the relationship. Jake is the only other human boy Dirk has talked to, and he doesn’t take too kindly to Caliborn. Jake was his only option, and Dirk is romantically deprived and wants a relationship, so he falls for him. Because of his orientation.
Despite not liking labels, Dirk is VERY open about his sexuality. He isn’t afraid to admit he loves boys and just boys. His room is a great indicator of this, he has a tv that contently flashes sexy horse men and owns about a billion homoerotic sex toys.
Dirk feels incredibly guilty for not being able to feel attraction towards Roxy. Why? Because he doesn’t like girls. He wants nothing more than for her to be happy and he wants to give her what she wants, because she admits to being in love with him.
Here. Right there. This is the line right after the above, where Dirk says that if he were to give Roxy what she wanted, he wouldn’t be staying true to who he is. Because he is not attracted to girls, because of his orientation.
Dirk has had so little human contact, being one of the only two humans left, and the only other human he talked to before Jane and Jake was Roxy. But he still just so naturally came to the conclusion that he only likes boys. Just like that. It was just so simple for him despite never seeing another man or women face-to-face, and the “default” is usually straight. It’s important to his character that he doesn’t feel attraction to girls because it is a key part in his relationship with Roxy and Jake. As was as important to his character arc of staying true to who he is. A boy that only loves boys.
It’s important because he struggles so much with the fact that he can’t reciprocate his friends feelings and is a source of his guilt, Dirk has a lot of guilt through the story besides this (Like how he feels for bullying Jake into a relationship or creating Lil Hal for example). Ignoring it is not only the struggles of a gay boy, but the whole point of his character. Dirk Strider does not like girls. He only likes boys. And it is nice to for once see the struggles of a gay boy that aren’t just homophobia, because more goes on in gay people’s lives, they have other relationships, they’re real people.
Dirk not feeling attraction to girls is important because that’s what makes him who he is. It’s what makes him stay true to himself. Don’t take that away.
TL;DR: Dirk is gay. Die mad about it.
