Long shot but can’t hurt to ask. If any of my mutuals work in healthcare may I ask a question about wrist BP cuffs?

While sitting, is it more accurate to have the arm resting on a pillow or something to be at heart height, have the arm bent so the hand/wrist is over your heart, or hand dangling/below heart height?

Similarly, when taking orthostatic vitals, where would be the ideal place to keep my hand?

Like i know how to take my vitals, resting and orthostatic. But I’ve had different nurses/techs do it differently from each other so it’s hard to keep track at times

it’s important for the wrist to be at heart level - and you can do that either as you described (resting that arm on a pillow or something) or by bending your elbow and putting your wrist over your heart (as long as the arm with the cuff is supported/held up by your other hand, because the arm you’re taking the BP reading on needs to be totally relaxed).

there was a trial done and published about in 2024 that showed how having your hand even a few inches below your heart (eg resting in your lap instead of on something heart-height) will make you overestimate your BP (get artificially higher numbers). and likewise, having your hand up higher than your heart will cause you to underestimate your BP!
