I Love Comics
I talk about comic books a lot in my movie Geek Loves Punk The reason is because comics are one of my favorite artistic mediums. I love comics because they utilize the visualisation a person sees in movies and utilize the control of pacing a person has when they read a book. In essence, depending on how slow or fast you turn a page and read the book determines how quickly you take in the story. I like that.
I felt alienated growing up for various valid reasons. When I was a kid, I saw the X-Men cartoon on Fox and I loved it. I wanted more. So, I would find the X-Men comics at the grocery store and bookstores and read them. I needed a place to escape too and I could do it in the X-Men world. I liked that the X-Men were alienated as well but would still fight to save a world that hated and feared them. I wanted to be an X-Man. I wanted to be Storm.
I took a graphic novel class in college. It changed my life. It was taught by Tom Dehaven, a published author. I’d always read comics growing up. But, taking this class, gave me academic permission to not feel guilty about reading comics. The class covered all kinds of comics from Hernandez brothers to Linda Barry to 1950’s Superman. There was also a history lesson on cartoons. This class showed & taught me that there was heart, soul & meaning in these comics & that there was a reason why I liked them so much. It made me want to tell stories with meaning.
I learned how to think visually with comics. When I look at a screenplay, it’ s my job to take the words on the page and turn them into pretty pictures with the help of my cinematographer. Comic books are almost the same thing as storyboards. Storyboards are drawings next to dialogue used to visualize a movie. Alfred Hitchcock was well-known for using meticulous storyboards. When I decided to make movies, I realized that I had been reading storyboards most of my life by reading comics. Comics is what led me to making movies.
So, now I need your help to finish a film I made that has a lot of comic book love in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, here’s the link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1335851532/geek-loves-punk-comedy-about-a-lesbian-geek-and-he

Following Your Dreams
I believe that Kickstarter and Indiegogo exist to help people follow their dreams. At Wondercon in 2010, I heard a Marvel Comics exec say, “Don’t let anyone wake you up from your dream.” Amen brother. In making Geek Loves Punk, I’ve been following my dreams and finding my happiness.
A quick gut check tells me that every aspect of making movies feeds my soul and spirit, and is how I want to foster happiness in the world.
We all have our inner Luke Skywalkers, i.e., we were born to fight for the greater good and to live up to our reason for being. Some choose to ignore their life’s calling, or ignore the impulse to figure out what their purpose is. But, the brave, the very brave, leave Tattoine and join the Rebellion and help fight the Galactic Empire.
Making movies is fun, hard work that demands grit and determination. But I don’t think it’s particularly heroic. When I look around, I see people doing heroic things everyday. I have a friend who’s determined to raise her three kids with the love and compassion she had to do without growing up, and she’s pulling it off. Another friend is an emergency pediatrician who literally saves babies’ lives. Another friend went to Iraq to serve his country and returned from Baghdad with a world’s worth of sadness in his eyes. I have a friend who’s so passionate about bowling that she moved apartments in order to live closer to the bowling alley.
I respect all of these folks defining and following their dreams. We’re all dreamers. I hope this encourages you to follow yours.
In the meantime, I’d really appreciate it if you’d support my Kickstarter campaign and help make this lil’ dream of mine come true. :)

I'm A Lesbian Christian
I am a lesbian Christian. I love women. I love Jesus. Most, importantly I’m not a jerk. When I was a freshman in college, I had two heterosexual roommates who were not religious or spiritual in any way. One of them told me, “Julie, you’re the first Christian I’ve ever met who isn’t judgemental and not an asshole. Your faith is sincere, plus it’s cool that you’re a lesbian.” I took that as a compliment. :)
My father was a small town Baptist minister. I started going to church before I was even born because my Mom went to church when she was pregnant with me. I loved the message I would hear at church. It was all about being kind and loving to others. I loved hearing about Jesus. When, I was about 12 years old, I felt the presence of God and Jesus in my life and decided to get baptised. I got baptised in a creek, under the sun, in small town Virginia. I’ve been a Christian ever since.
I first realized that I had crushes on girls when I was about 12 or 13. I knew the crushes were romantic and it scared me. I’d pray and beg God to turn me heterosexual. I would draw crosses on pieces of paper when I was doing my homework to help me focus on God and to try to ignore the feelings I felt when I was around my crush. I’d cry myself to sleep listening to Gospel music; trying to rid myself of my attraction to women. I thought I was a lecherous monster who wanted to hurt women, which was silly. I just wanted to go on dates with them and have them be my girlfriend. That’s it.
It was a long journey, but I finally got to the place where I was comfortable with my faith and my sexuality. I read books that explained the scriptures in the Bible that referenced homosexuality and how they can be interpreted as not being homophobic. After going to support groups, finding many gay affirming churches and gay affirming Christians, I was able to get to where I was happy about being a lesbian Christian; which is awesome!
Also, just want to say that I’m a huge supporter in people believing in what they choose to believe in. I have friends from all walks of life. I have Muslim, Jewish, Buddhists and Hindu friends. Two of my really good friends are Athiests. They respect what I believe in and I respect what they believe in. I would never want something like my faith to deter me from having kind, respectful and loving friendships/relationships with others. Just to let you know. :)
So, I’m happy with who I am. I’m happy with what I believe in and I’m happy with who I’m attracted to. I am what I am and I’m happy about it.
I made a movie that has a Christian lesbian in it and I need your help to finish it. Please support my Kickstarter campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1335851532/geek-loves-punk-comedy-about-a-lesbian-geek-and-he

Movies Are Simply Awesome
How is it that movies can be so powerful? They create such a camaraderie among folks who share a viewing experience and relive it together long after leaving the theater They help folks believe in and be inspired to follow their dreams. They make people happy. They allow folks to escape.
The first movies I ever watched in a theater were Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. I was blown away by the lead characters who wanted to leave their poor provincial towns or prove that they were more than just street rats.
In college, I went to midnight screenings at the Byrd Theater in Richmond, Virginia. I remember seeing The Never Ending Story. The crowd of mainly college students cheered like mad when the movie started. The theme song came on and everyone was belting out "The Never Ending Story" at the top of their lungs! Whenever Falkor came on the screen, the audience roared in excitement. The camaraderie was amazing! This is when I realized that movies can really mean something to their fans. They invoke a certain passion. I knew then that I wanted to be a part of creating exactly those kinds of experiences.
After moving to California, I went to a book signing and the author recommended attending a midnight screening of the Twilight movies, just for the experience alone. So I went to a screening of Twilight: New Moon. I imagine this is what it must’ve been like to be at a Beatles concert. Anytime the vampire and the wolf were on screen, the girls would go crazy and scream. It was pure pop culture gold for the audience.
Movies help us to experience catharsis. They’re an artistic impression of the best and worst of us; the magic and whimsy and rage and sadness of being human. We all have our James Bond moments, as well as our Charlie Brown moments. I feel so lucky to have discovered this medium that reflects back to us glimpses of who we are, and who we can be.

How A Small Farm Town Made Me
Southampton County is a small farm town in Virginia. I grew up there, slightly depressed and disgruntled. I'd watch Saved By the Bell and envy the kids who went to Bayside High. They seemed to lead perfect, happy and exciting lives. Now, with some adult perspective, I'm thankful for growing up in a farm town. It's completely shaped me and my approach to moviemaking.
I really believe in being down-to-Earth. I don’t believe in getting too big for your britches. And while I (kind of) agree with Monica from Friends, who said, “A little pretension never hurt anybody,” pretension can turn me off. When you grow up surrounded by cornfields, trees and peanut fields, there’s not much to be pretentious about.
Humility goes right along with that. I've found that being genuinely kind is the best way to inspire people to help you. Making movies with practically no budget requires relying heavily on the kindness of others. In my experience, kindness tends to attract humble, sweet people who are inspired to help you out. A wonderful, down-to-earth group of people gathered around this movie, from all walks of life: from small town West Virginia, from Indiana and Illinois, Guam, Texas, Pennsylvania, folks who’d grown up in L.A. and Oakland. Everyone got along--no egos, no drama. We worked together efficiently and had a blast doing it.
I wish I had some dramatic anecdotes to tell about all the fights we got into. But, frankly, there were no fights. Other than at the end of the day, we were super exhausted, we got along very well. We were all happy to work on something bigger than ourselves.
Film production is a lot of hard work. I had a lot of role models in my hometown when it came to working hard and making an honest living. I've never worked so hard in my life as I did working on this movie. Hundreds of hours, some solo, many with this lovely group of folks. About 15 of us didn't shy away from hard work and pulled off what big-budget movies do with a cast and crew of hundreds.
Here's the single most influential thing about my farm town past: it encouraged me to follow my dreams. I was 10 years old, in a Girl Scout meeting where the leaders went around the room asking what we wanted to be when we grew up. I piped up with confidence,” A movie director!” They said, “Awesome!” They inspired me to believe that if I could dream it, than I could achieve anything I set my heart to.
Obviously, I’d be a completely different person if Virginia hadn't shaped me from the beginning. I might never have dreamt bigger than cornfields and peanut fields. I might never have made my way to California to make movies. But I did.
And here we are on Kickstarter, continuing to dream big and to rely on the kindness of friends and strangers. If you can find it in your heart to support this campaign, please help get this movie made and accept my deepest thanks!
