GEEKY NIGHTS x MAZDA SKYACTIV

Last Feb 14 & 16, Me Vic and Abe and various other bloggers and car clubs, were invited by Mazda to try out their new Mazda CX-5 and Mazda 6 with SkyActiv technology. SkyActiv is a series of technologies that enables Mazda to make their engine smaller and power efficient, but still retain their output. Other technologies found in the cars include i-stop, which stops the engine when the car is at full stop and resumes it immediately when you step on the gas. The other one is i-eloop, which converts energy normally wasted when you step on the brake, into a capacitor which can then be used by the various electronics in the car.

The boys were asked to participate in an eco drive around the city and also in Clark, to see which group was able to consume the least fuel driving the same route. I was assigned to be with Joey Abiog and TJ Panganiban on a white CX-5 while Vic and Abe were assigned with Raffy Pedrajita on a red Mazda 6. It was my first time to join an eco run so it was a very exciting prospect. Day 1 involved a drive around the city, from Makati all the way to Quezon City, going through various areas where traffic is normally moderate to heavy. This ensured that the drive simulated normal conditions driving around the city. At the end of the day, we drove to Clark for Day 2 of the eco drive, which involved driving expressway from Clark all the way to the Hacienda Luisita exit then back.

From my experience with the CX-5, it was a very smooth and comfy ride. i-stop was at first a bit unnerving, because you are used to panicking whenever the engine stops, but I got over it pretty quickly.

All in all it was a very good way to spend a weekend. I learned a lot about car technology (fyi i dont really drive), got to test drive a sexy car and most of all, spend a really wonderful two days with some of my favorite people.
