A hidden gem :)

This manga, Shinsengumi Okita Souji - Kirameki no Zanzo (新選組 沖田総司 煌の残像), is a collection of oneshots that take place in different points in Okita’s life. I worked with @realvsable to make it available in English.

Synopsis:

The Shinsengumi, the Wolves of Mibu, has many fans not only because of the popularity of the historical drama, but also because they were men who stayed true to their beliefs in the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate. Okita Souji, while acting like a demon when he held the sword, still retained a lighthearted and childlike spirit. This book thoroughly depicts Souji’s charm as seen by women.

I’m still fine, as you can see.

Okita Souji

Original: まだまだこの通り元気です

Okita said this at the doorstep of Sato Hikogoro’s Inn, when Kondo and others stopped in Hino on their way to Kofu Castle.

He supposedly imitated a sumo wrestler’s move called shiko o fumu to prove that he was fine.

Maybe because of this, his illness took a turn for the worse and he ended up proving the opposite, so had to be left behind.

This anecdote comes from the book “聞き書き新選組” written by Sato Hikogoro’s grandson Sato Akira.

Translation Notes

“まだまだ” means “not yet” or “still more to go”. I’m not sure if he’s saying “I’m still fine”, “Not yet. I’m fine” or “I’m fine enough to still do this”

“この通り” means “just like this”, “just as you see” or “in this way”. I think “as you can see” would fit the context, since he followed with a demonstration of his sumo wrestling skills.

I’ve scanned some of the cute full-color illustrations from the corners of Watanabe Takeo’s latest book, “Kaze Hikaru Kikou”, which is a guide to all of the historical sites that Watanabe-sensei visited (and used in the manga), and also has assorted other information related to the making of Kaze Hikaru. It’s really well done, if anyone’s undecided about buying a copy.

Hijikata Toshizo

Original:  今日は江戸の真ん中でスナイドル銃の調練が行われる時代でございますからなあ

Hijikata said this at the Shieikan Dojo while laughing at an old-fashioned ceremony called shinbunjitsu. This was a ritual in which a student officially became a disciple, and required a month of preparation.

It shows that Hijikata is very practical and preferred modernization over tradition.

From his writing debut in Meiji until his death in Shōwa, the prolific Izumi Kyōka (1873-1939) wrote over three hundred narratives. Kyōka was famous as a quirky, anti-mainstream writer, a romantic-idealist, and an impressionistic stylist, whose narrative aesthetics ran counter to the prevailing naturalism of his time. He frequently wrote supernatural “gothic” tales haunted by a dark, perverse eroticism, and many stories made protagonists, or antagonists, of people inhabiting the newly defined domains of the social abject or the uncanny of the era, such as geisha, outcastes, ghosts and demons.
