Don't love that the kid at [local photo lab] told me my scans would take quote about three weeks

Thought to myself this morning at coffee about doing some family photo project things (which implies I have a framework and priorities and consistent work on it which, lmao. Anyway), but also noted with a little ... not sadness but almost deflation that there weren't any surprises anymore, that I've already been through everything so many times that I've known for years pretty much everything we have (which, on the whole, is not a ton. It's disproportionate, at least, between different sides of the family).
Got home and decided to revisit a crumbling postwar album of my great aunt's, where I've forgotten what's the the fault of the paper and glue and what's the fault of my pre-MLIS attempts at conservation (unhelpful, potentially actively destructive). Only the first half of the album is full but I decided to go through the second half anyway, just to make sure there wasn't anything tucked away.
At the back were five photos I'd never seen before, including two of my grandfather z''l towards the end of the war in Europe, in groups with his guys, with handwritten captions. A surprise.
