Gemini paced back and forth in an empty classroom. After her conversation with Ophelia only days before, she couldn’t seem to get the girl’s voice telling her to ‘ask Trent himself’ out of her head. This new information had been eating away at her. Even though it happened before she knew either of them, she couldn’t help but be mad at herself for not seeing Trent for who he was sooner. In a fit of anger earlier, she had finally built up the courage to ask him to meet her at lunch to talk. She didn’t even know how she was going to say it but it was too late to back out. Now all she had to do was wait.
Trent went looking for his girlfriend as soon as he got out of chemistry and found her in an empty classroom near the cafeteria. He let out a little laugh at the sight of her pacing, half wondering what trivial thing she must be worried about now. “Hey,” he said, approaching her from behind and wrapping his arms around her waist. “What’s up?”
Gemini jumped at Trent’s touch, half startled from not expecting it and half just not wanting to be touched by him. “Oh, hey,” she said, turning out of his grip to face him. “You startled me.” An awkward silence filled the room. Feeling uncomfortable, Gemini crossed her arms and decided to just jump right into it. “You know Ophelia Jacobs, right?”
Trent furrowed his eyebrows when Gemini moved away from him, leaving his hands stretched out towards her for a moment before stuffing them into his pockets instead. He frowned at the mention of Ophelia, wondering what Gemini was getting at. “I introduced you to her, didn’t I?” he laughed. “So obviously I know her,” he told her, standing up to his full height so he was looking down at the younger girl.
Gemini looked away from Trent, trying to remember when he had introduced her to Ophelia then remembering the Halloween party Trent had brought her to. “Yeah, yeah, you’re right. Sorry.” She looked up at him, feeling somewhat smaller than she did a minute ago. “Um, how do you know her exactly?”
Trent shrugged a little, still making a point of looking down at Gemini. “She’s friends with Bryce,” he said. “I mean, more or less. She’s kinda a bitch to him, but I mean, she’s just a bitch in general if you ask me.” he told her, reaching out to wrap an arm around her waist again.
Gemini raised her eyebrows at Trent calling Ophelia a bitch. “I dance with her, you know. I don’t think she is. Plus, I didn’t really ask for your opinion on her,” she stated, squirming uncomfortably when Trent touched her again.
Trent took a step back from Gemini when she squirmed, deciding he would rather be the one to pull away instead of giving her the chance to. “Sorry, I didn’t realize you two were best friends now,” he scoffed, letting out a demeaning chuckle. “If you don’t want my opinion, why are you asking me about her? I hardly know her. But I mean, I know her better than you do, so I think my opinion counts a bit more than yours does.”
Gemini noticed his reaction to her discomfort and tried not to react to it. “We’ve been talking lately, yeah.” She narrowed her eyes at him, realizing that he was completely invalidating everything she was saying and realizing that this was nothing new. “I’m asking about her because she told me what happened at that party last summer.”
Trent furrowed his eyebrows again at Gemini’s statement before realization dawned on him suddenly. “Okay, so I hooked up with her at a party,” he said, nonchalantly, an air of confusion in his voice. “What’s the big deal?”
Gemini let out a breathy laugh and shook her head in disbelief. “She told me you raped her,” she stated, no doubt in her mind that Ophelia was right.
Trent responded with a breathy, humorless laugh of his own. “I did what?” he questioned, eyebrows raised. “We hooked up,” he stated again, just as matter of factly. “And she never brought it up again so its pretty cruel of her to just start spreading lies about me like that.”
Gemini looked him straight in the eye and repeated herself. “You raped her.” She kept staring at him, scanning his face and trying to find any sign of dishonesty. “I really don’t think she’s lying.”
Trent frowned as Gemini restated herself. “You barely know her but you’re believing her over your boyfriend?” he questioned, a note of hurt even showing in his voice. He stepped closer to her again. “You know me, Gemini. I love you. Do you really think I’d do something like that?”
Gemini took a step back as he took a step forward, her arms still crossed. “I don’t feel like I know you anymore.” She shook her head and laughed again. “Do you love me? You’re constantly making me feel small, making me feel stupid, putting me down for the things I love. I don’t even remember the last time I had a say in anything or the last time you took anything I said seriously. Is that what you call love? ‘Cause if so, I don’t want your love.”
Trent rolled his eyes, looking up at the ceiling. “Oh my god, you’re so dramatic,” he scoffed. “Of course I love you. Why would I put up with all your bullshit if I didn’t love you? i stick around and play along with all your childish games and yet I’m still the bad guy somehow? Without me, you’re just some dumb kid with no friends but you want to break up? Fine. But good luck finding a guy besides me who actually likes you. And as for Ophelia, I didn’t do anything to her, so I’d just love for her to find some kind of proof that I ‘raped’ her,” he said, putting air quotes around the word. “Not that anyone would believe either of you anyway.”
Gemini’s jaw dropped and she felt tears prick her eyes. “See, that’s what I mean. Everything’s always my fault. I’m the one being dramatic, I’m childish. I don’t have any friends because you’ve isolated me from everyone because, according to you, you’re all I need. But you know what? Good. I’d rather have no friends than have a rapist as my boyfriend. And thanks for the luck, but I don’t think I’ll need any,” she snapped. She turned to walk away, being done with the conversation.
Trent could not believe what he was hearing. “Hey!” he half-shouted, covering the space Gemini had moved away from him in one easy stride and grabbing her arm harshly, spinner her around to face him. “You don’t get to just walk away like that.”
Gemini froze after she felt herself being spun around, her eyes darting back and forth between Trent’s face and his hand gripping her arm. A second passed before she struck up the courage to pull her arm from out of his grip. “You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore,” she said before spinning back around and quickly walking out of the room. She knew he wouldn’t try to follow her into the hallway and start something with people around. He wouldn’t want to be seen as the bad guy. She started aimlessly walking down the hallway and pulled out her phone, dialing Ophelia’s number. “Hey, Ophelia?” she said when the girl answered. “Trent and I broke up.”
