Because our building are way too big and have way too many staircases to actually walk. Don’t mention it, though. It’s public decency; you can’t just leave a bloke dying on the steps. It ruins the image of the Ministry.”

"You can draw them in with good intentions, innovative ideas.” Or so Malachi wanted to believe. “The Floo is rather convenient as is Apparating, but we shouldn’t rely on it, yeah? We’ve got our own two feet for a reason. But these staircases...they seem so unnecessary. Guess it’s one way to work off that morning doughnut. That would be quite the headline. Do you think they’d make a little gravesite for me?”

“Ohhhh. Why didn’t you say so?! My brother’s been trying to get me into Doctor Who for ages. It’s not really my thing, but I do think I’d make a pretty good, er, companion? That’s the ‘terminology’, right?” Winnie asked, raising her hands to form teasing air quotes. “Oh, yeah, I suppose so. You seem like a smart cookie, you’d be a prime candidate for muggle school. I hear they do interviews and stuff, right? One conversation with you and they’d be sold.” Of course, Winnie herself had harboured fantasies of post-secondary education when she was younger, but those were dreams for girls with longer attention spans and more money. “Right? Imagine how much money Ignatia Wildsmith made off of Floo powder when she was still around. I need to do something like that; libraries aren’t exactly paying the big bucks these days.” Shrugging casually, Winnie followed him in, swinging a friendly arm around his shoulder. “Oh, no, not at all. I’m just using you as an excuse to get a little pre-shift snack,” she added with a mischievous smile. “Oh. Okay then, if that’s the case, then maybe leave my name out of it. Or maybe skip the piggyback ride entirely and try working out!”

"It’s a great show. But of course I think so, since it’s my favorite. It takes quite a bit of time to watch though so I can understand if you don’t get into it. And companion is correct! See, you know your fair share abut it already.” Malachi wasn’t so convinced, but he had considered his options. Particularly recently when the budget for the lab kept getting cut. “I may apply one of these days but I also have to think about which universities I would even want to apply to.” His doctorate would take him four years and it was quite the commitment to make. “In this modern age, it’s hard to come up with something that isn’t already on the market, but I’m sure you could do it. You coming up with new words is just the first step to innovative genius.” Letting out a laugh as the girl wrapped an arm about him, he let out a wolfish smile of his own. “Well, dang, so this is what it’s liked to be used. Hate to break it to you that I’m not made of money, so a muffin is about all I can fork out for you. Though if I’m leaving your name out of something, I should probably know what your name is in the first place.”

“What kind of doctor then? Like, a PhD? That’s a lot of school, but then again, maybe you like that sort of thing. Me, I don’t know if I could go through that again. Twelve years was enough. Okay, see, I could do that. Or I could just come up with a brand-new slang word and get everyone to start using it and make a new word that way. It seems like less work.” Winnie shrugged, swinging her arms dreamily as she walked down the sidewalk. “It’s really no problem at all. I can’t, in good conscience, let you go on with your day without any breakfast. What if you fainted next? Nope, I have to make sure you get some food in you.” Upon reaching the little cafe, Winnie leaned forward to pull the door open, holding it so he could walk through as well. “Um, yes. That’s an excellent idea. Sisters love piggyback rides from their brothers, take it from me. If I’ve influenced you to give your sister a piggyback ride, she totally owes me.”

"A time travelling doctor. One with a Tardis.” Malachi clarified with a grin. “I would be up for going to muggle university to get my doctorate, though. I’ve considered it a couple times but it’d made a lot harder when I went to a school that no university has ever heard of.” Fabricating a diploma was probably possible through the Ministry if he really desired to do so, but so far he had held off. “But you do bring up a good point. If you invent something, you’ll be set for life.” Hopping along aside her, he gave a bow of his head as he walked into the cafe. “Thank you, m’lady. Is this your good deed of the day? I’ve always tried to live by that philosophy myself though I don’t keep track of them. I think that beats the point if you only do it because you feel obligated to.” Walking his way up to the line and glancing up at the menu, he let out a laugh. “I’m not sure how much Adeline will appreciate that considering she may fall flat on her back. Because I’ll fall on my back and squish her, but it’s the thought that counts.”

“Well, I suppose I can’t argue that. I’m certainly no doctor, so if they think you’re alright… Really? They just let anyone go ahead and turn made-up words into real words? Heh, maybe you shouldn’t have told me about that.” Winnie shuffled her feet in place, squinting off down the street as she debated her options. “If that’s all, there’s a place round the corner where you can get a delicious chunk of banana bread for a reasonable price. I’m almost late for work, but really, that’s normal. If I arrive on time today, someone will probably drop dead from the shock. And on the way, I can start telling you about your new best friend for building stamina, day-long hikes. Also piggy-back rides. Frequent piggy-back rides will do it.”

"I work in a sector of biology, but I’m not to the level of a doctor by any means myself. Though I’d love to be a Doctor. Just not that kind.And I’m not sure how the procedure works to put in a bid to make a new rod, but it’s worth looking into.” Straightening up his posture, Malachi turned himself on his heel with a jump and began to walk with her. “Oh, I wouldn’t want to hold you up for work, but if you’re sure, then that does sound lovely. I didn’t eat breakfast yet and we all know that’s the most important meal of the day. And maybe that’s partially why I was so affected by the walk up those stairs.” That and his stamina was far fro the greatest. “Piggy back rides? I don’t know who I could carry around all day. Save for my sister, Adeline. Maybe I could carry her around while we go shopping or something similar. Could make for an interesting experiment.”

“You don’t look fine, mate. I don’t think catching your breath is gonna cut it.” Evie arched an eyebrow, her expression somewhere between amusement and concern. “You sure you don’t need to sit down or something? Get some water? Collapse for an entire day?”

Malachi leaned up against the concrete pillar, his chest heaving, his heart rate sky high. He covered his hand dramatically over his chest. “Hibernation sounds wonderful right about now.” His legs collapsed from under him and he fell onto his bottom. “Go on without me. I may not make me. If I wake up by winter, let me know who won the election, yeah? And also tape the Doctor Who Special for me please. Preserve me in carbonite if you must.”

“Debatable, to be honest, because of the whole power structure dictating you can’t really get to the top with straight dealings, but that’s a different story, I guess. But I’ll amend: the Ministry stairs are awful, aren’t they? But I’m good, I run. Water, here. Breathe, my friend.”

"Hogwash. You can get to the top if people elect you to the top. That’s how it works, right? An honest person could make it there. But yes, they’re real dreadful. My calves are really feeling the burn.” He reached forward for the water bottle with a grateful grin, heaving in a few gulps of breath as he straightened up his posture. “Thank you for not leaving me hanging to dry.”

“Uh… did you say a cramp? Because people who are fine don’t get cramps, I’m pretty sure that’s one of the prerequisites for ‘fine-ness.’ Is that a word? God, I’m a librarian who doesn’t know whether or not words exist. Look, did you not have breakfast this morning? You’ve got to know that’s terrible for you.” Winnie slid her rucksack off her back, rummaging through the contents until she pulled out a battered metal water bottle. “You can take a swig off this if you need to, but… really? A cramp? Maybe you should try taking walks on your free time, build up that endurance.”

"Well, perhaps right now I’m experiencing some discomfort because of the cramping, but I passed my last physical with flying colors, so I think I still qualify as fine according to medical standards. And fine-ness, I think, could make an excellent addition to the English language. You should contact the Merriam-Webster foundation. They add new words to the dictionary every year, you know.” Straightening up his posture, he gratefully reached for her water bottle. “I did have some yogurt this morning, but I could use some more potassium in my diet, I suppose. Because I’m not much for running and while walks are all well and good, I’m not sure how good they are for building up a lot of stamina.”

“I’m afraid I’m going to have to agree, pal. This Ministry’s awful. This is why we use the Floo. And also, why I don’t work here, probably. You want a drink? I think I have water?”

"Oh, I don’t find the Ministry awful. It could use some work, perhaps, but we all can, really. It’s more of his architectural design that I have a problem with. And that’s very generous of you, but I wouldn’t want to take that from you since you also just had to climb up the stairs and yet, here you are, not nearly as out of breath.” And now he was even moreso after that whirlwind of words.

"No, no, I’m fine, really. I just need to...catch my breath. That was quite a few stairs and I might have a bit of a cramp? Should have had that banana this morning.” Each word was punctured with a heaving breath, hunched over and gripping his hands to his knees as Malachi fought the urge to keel over onto the concrete.
