Whump in books
Edit: Had to include all the pretty covers
A rec list ( I’ll be updating this list as I find more books )
This is male character whump only, and the books are in various genres. Descriptions will contain spme spoilers. I’ve submitted most of these to the Whumpapedia too but I’m keeping this list here for my future convenient reference.
Eric Carter series (Stephen Blackmoore) - noir urban fantasy
Eric is beaten, knocked unconscious, overuses magic and collapses all over the place, leaving his allies ( all of which hate him to a degree ) to pick up the pieces. Whump is sprinkled throughout the books, a bit of aftercare included - I’m making detailed whump lists for this series cause they’re so neat.
Orphan X series (Greg Hurwitz) - ex government spy action with found family trope
Evan gets concussed, stabbed, beaten and shot throughout the books, we get a few aftercare scenes and him struggling with the wounds after. Evan also has OCD and we see that throughout the series.
Dragon Unleashed (Grace Draven) - historical setting fantasy romance
Malachus is shot and left to die when found by a travelling group, taken in and nursed back to health. Several chapters of descriptive whump, exactly how the arrows are removed, how much pain he’s in, the healing (although sped up) process etc.
Down Comes the Night - YA atmospheric fantasy with romance at the end
Wren is tasked with healing Hal (her sworn enemy) from a serious illness. Hal is dying and at her mercy, recovering very slowly, with setbacks. They have healing sessions, one time she neglects him and he gets worse, she kidnaps him, it goes wrong and he gets hypothermia. The whump is a plotpoint.
Bloodwitch (book 3 of Witchlands series - Susan Dennard ) - YA Fantasy
Aeduan is one of the 4 main characters where each one gets a book focused more on their story. He was portrayed as a villain in the 1st 2 books. He is shot with poisoned arrows that make him lose his magic. He can’t heal and ends up at the mercy of someone who previously stabbed him in the heart (love interest). We get whump while the characters are travelling. Aeduan is not having a good time in this book.
Frost and Fugitive (Kate Avery Ellison)- YA atmospheric fantasy (Fugitive is Frost but from Gabe’s POV)
Gabe is on the run and found in the woods by Lia, shot, bleeding in the snow. He recovers in her barn, still in hiding. Several chapters of whump. He doesn’t start getting better until she brings him in the house in the warmth.
Angelfall (Susan Ee)- dystopian urban fantasy romance
Raffe is an angel that lost his wings (we get the gory details of how) and taken in by Penryn who saw what happened and hopes to use him. Whump at the beggining, some whump sprinkled later.
Homebound ( Lydia Hope) - dystopian alien adult romance
Simon is an alien that got stranded on earth years ago and had since been wasting away in prison, not before being experimented on for years. Gemma, a prison worker, helps him get his health and strength back. Whump is a plot point. Simon’s recovery journey is told in great detail.
Lighthouse duet ( Carol Berg) - Fantasy
Valen is injured and taking shelter in a monastery, on the run from his family. Lots of whump sprinkled throughout the duology. There’s one part where he ends up back with his family who punish him by parading him tied up, in a mask, in front of the entire city. In the second book he gets injured and taken care of.
Charles Hayden series by Sean Thomas Russel - Historical Naval Fiction
Hayden is stabbed, concussed, shipwrecked and gets hypothermia and is taken care of by his crew, afterwards he’s shipwrecked again and found by a doctor on the coast of France, then taken to a woman’s house where he takes a while to recover before finding the rest of the crew. There’s whump sprinkled throughout.
Cold Summer (Gwen Cole) - YA time travel - part historical fantasy romance
Kale time-travels back and forth to WW2 and pops up back home with various wounds from fighting on the front lines. Ends up getting shot and in the hospital. Lots of angst in this one.
Shades of magic series (V.E. Schwab) - NA / grimdark Fantasy
Kell (our redhead) gets in a lot of scrapes, is stabbed a lot, bleeds a lot etc. Lots of whump for Kell throughout the trilogy. At one time he is kidnapped, tied up and tears his wrists open trying to get free, almost bleeds out.
The Grim Company series (Luke Skull) - Grimdark Fantasy
Cole goes through a lot in this series. In the second book he is imprisoned and works in the mines. His health is so poorly that he’s nicknamed Ghost.
The Prince of Fools (and following 2 books by Mark Lawrence) - Grimdark Fantasy (but funny asf)
Jalan is injured multiple times, also has motion sicknes, get f-ed up in many ways. He gets rescued by his close friend and we also get some aftercare (not a lot compared to other books but these are so fun to read)
The Sons of Thestian ( & Sequel by M.E. Vaughan) - NA Fantasy
Book 3 is not out yet but this cover is great.
Rufus, a mage, largely hated by a lot of people, overuses his magic in the 1st book wich combined with a nasty head wound causes him to go into a coma from which he recovers slowly. In the 2nd book he and his little brother are found very ill in the mountains and brought to safety, where he recovers slowly once again. We find out through flashbacks that he’d been tortured on top of it.
Maradaine Constabulary Series (Marshall Ryan Maresca) - Detective Fantasy
Minox, a detective and secretly a mage who can’t control his magic, is kidnapped in the 1st book and rescued by his partner, after almost bleeding out. In the following books he loses control of his magic often, with whumpy consequences. This series contains a lot of magic overuse whump.
This Vicious Grace (Emily Thiede) - YA Fantasy Romance
Dante is a bodyguard whose secret power is that he can heal very quickly if he’s in overall good health. He gets thrown is prison for a few days (weeks?) during which his health declines, but he’s rescued, helped to heal by his employer. She is someone who can drain away other people’s powers and use them. In the final battle, Dante gets injured, but to save his employer he offers up all his healing powers for her to use. He ends up having to recover from his wounds the hard way at the end of the book.
The Thief (Meghan Whalen Turner) - Adult Fantasy
Gen is a thief who ends up on a quest, getting very injured very often in the meantime. There is aftercare at the end of the book.
Nathan Peake series (Seth Hunter) - Historical Naval Fiction
Nathan throughout the series is almost hanged, gets in many fights, is shot in the head (with some good whumpy aftercare), shot in the chest with a TBI causing memory loss, with plenty aftercare, stabbed and more.
Red Roses mean Love (Jacquie D'Alessandro) - historical romance
Stephen is shot and left for dead, found by Hayley and brought back to her house where he takes his time recovering in hiding, not disclosing his identity.
Sorcery of Thorns (Margaret Rogerson) - YA fantasy romance
Nathaniel is attacked and injured, ending up bedridden, partially recovering and then going back into action, overuses magic etc. Second half of the book has him weak and shaky.
Lightning (Dean Koontz) - time-travel urban fantasy
Stefan time-travels to protect Laura, gets shot in the process, and has to keep protecting her while injured. He ends up needing rescue himself hehe. Lots of aftercare.
Wow! Thanks for the recs! It looks like some of these might be up my alley…
I will definitely be coming back to this once I have time to read full books again :)
GH Peter is kidnapped, 2/5. Whump types: threatened, gagged, unconscious, scared, tortured, tied up, in pain.
Special Affairs Team Ten Season 2
Hi hi! I hope you don't mind me sending you an ask :D
Do you have any cool prompts for the used as bait trope? Asking for... a friend. (Me. I'm asking me. 😆 🤣) Feel free to twist it up if you like! :D
-- @whumperofworlds
:D Hey I know it's been a long time but I love this trope! Ty for the ask!
Used As Bait
Content: beatings, manhandling, forced to kneel, injury whump, crying, restraints, torture, gagging
Victim that is completely uninvolved in whatever conflict is and just happens to be really close to their would-be rescuer. Dragged along by the hair as they struggle and beg to know what the hell they did to get treated this way.
Getting beaten up on the way so they have plenty of bruises to show on camera, to provoke the rescuer. "I'm not resisting--ugh!" *Punch* "Agh... please stop... I don't know who you are..."
Or, treating the captive nicely until they're in front of the camera, then whispering, "this isn't personal. I just need to make you scream." Before they start torturing the victim.
Victim that is part of the rescuer's team and gets interrogated on the way, captors hoping to get some valuable intel on the rescuer
Loyal captive that keeps their mouth shut tight and holds in their reactions as they are shoved and then punched down into position, to their knees in front of the camera
Punching and kicking existing injuries just before the stream starts to make sure they're on the verge of tears by the time their rescuer is watching
Resentment toward the victim's leader, and the victim by extension, that results in more passive on-the-way manhandling and rough treatment. Maybe they gag them for no reason.
Keeping them tightly bound and gagged for a long period of time as they wait for the right moment to start streaming. By that time, tears have started to run down the victim's cheeks from the pain of straining joints and cut blood flow, and from difficulty breathing. When the gag is finally ripped off, they gasp, head drooping as their eyes squeeze shut, relief flooding their system.
"You didn't have to do that. You didn't have to gag me."

SHACKLED: A Dim Moment Before Dawn
Part 1 of this original western whump fic can be found [Here]
Hunted, wounded, and certain he won't survive another sunrise, a shackled man risks his life to save a widow from a violent attacker--only to find himself taken in and given the first safety he's known in years.
Warning: This will get very whumpy (in the best possible way) and there will be no cutting away from the hurt or comfort scenes. Adult themes may be touched upon in this story, these moments will be written with care and not gratuitous.
Part 5
Sarah sighed, her eyelids heavy as she looked down at the stranger sleeping as still as death in her bed. She hadn’t let go of his hand since she’d worked his grip free of the pillow.
He felt calmer now, his breathing warm and even in the hush of the room. But every time she shifted even a little, his brow twitched or his fingers tightened around hers. She feared that letting go might send him spiraling deeper into whatever nightmare he’d crawled out of. So she stayed. Her thumb settled against the back of his knuckles, rubbing slow circles without thinking, trying to offer what comfort she could.
Gently, Ruth pulled the wool blanket over his shoulders, then added the quilt, careful to cover the salve-smeared bandages that protected the wounds along his backside. When she finished, she crossed the room and dropped into the rocking chair with a defeated huff, folding her arms around herself.
For a moment, the sisters looked at one another without speaking as the clock on the mantle chimed softly; it was two o’clock in the morning. The fire burned low, its glow barely holding back the shadows pressing in from the corners of the room.
Ruth rocked back gently, the chair creaking under her weight. “So,” she said quietly, “there’s a dead man in the barn.”
Sarah nodded, exhaustion pooling behind her eyes like hot sand.
“And this man—” Ruth’s gaze flicked toward the bed. “—he killed him?”
Sarah nodded again, slower this time, her eyes unfocused. The memory rose unbidden: Knox’s hand at her neck, the weight of him forcing her forward, fingers touching her, pulling at her skirt. Her throat tightened, her vision blurring as the chill of what might have been crept up her spine.
“He saved me,” Sarah said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her chest. She clung to the memory of the sudden relief of Knox being torn away from her.
“He could be dangerous,” Ruth said softly.
Sarah could still hear the jangle of chains, still see the wild look in the stranger’s eyes as he pulled the metal links tight around Knox’s throat and snuffed out his life. There had been a look of fury in his eyes, but also desperation.
His face had been drawn tight with effort, teeth bared not in rage but in strain, as if every muscle in him had been screaming. His eyes had been wide, dark, and glassy with a terror barely held in check. He had looked like a man fighting not just the threat in front of him, but a memory of something older and deeper than the moment itself.
There had been no triumph in it. No satisfaction. Only a terrible focus. The kind that comes when there is no room left for doubt or mercy.
She remembered the way his hands had shaken even as he held fast, the chains biting into his own skin as he refused to let go. He hadn’t looked at Knox then—not really—but at her, just once, as if to be sure she was still there. Still safe.
And when it was over, when Knox had gone still, the fury drained from him all at once, leaving something raw and startled behind. Like a man waking from a nightmare to find blood on his hands.
Sarah swallowed, her chest tightening at the memory.
“He said his name’s Wyatt,” Sarah went on, as if she hadn’t heard the warning. “He said Knox was looking for him.”
Ruth’s brows drew together. “I can work faster.” She swallowed, repeating his words. “Those shackles, Sarah. Could Knox have been a guard? Was he hunting down an escaped prisoner?”
The pieces shifted uneasily into place. The two men had known one another—that much was clear. Knox hadn’t been surprised to see Wyatt; he’d been angry. Possessive. Like a man reclaiming something that belonged to him.
“No,” Sarah said after a moment. She looked down at Wyatt’s face, drawn and pale even in sleep, his body marked by hunger and cruelty. “Criminal or not, no man deserves what was done to him. And Knox—” Her jaw tightened. “He was enjoying himself.”
Ruth fell quiet at that.
Sarah exhaled slowly, the weight of the night pressing down on her shoulders. “We can’t leave his body,” she said at last. “We have to take him to town.”
Ruth stiffened. “And him?” She nodded toward Wyatt.
“He can’t be left alone,” Sarah said without hesitation. “And you can’t go to town by yourself.” She squeezed Wyatt’s hand gently, as if reassuring them both. “I’ll take the body in. I’ll tell the sheriff what happened.”
Ruth looked at her sharply. “Sarah—”
“I know,” she said quietly.
The room fell silent again, broken only by the soft creak of the chair and Wyatt’s steady breathing.
“I’ll sit with him tonight,” Sarah added. “If you’ll watch him while I go to town.”
Ruth nodded, unease etched into every line of her face. She quietly left the room, stopping only to give a gentle squeeze to Sarah’s shoulder.
Sarah’s gaze lingered on the stranger’s face. In the lantern light, she could see his sun-damaged skin, which still somehow looked so pale. The bruise under his left eye had fully bloomed. Her mind flashed back to Knox’s final struggle, the chains tightening around his neck and the punch that landed on Wyatt’s cheek.
She pushed the image away and closed her eyes, anchoring herself instead in the feel of Wyatt’s hand in hers—callused, scarred, knuckles misshapen from hard labor.
Slowly, Sarah drifted off, overcome by the events of the day. A light, uneasy sleep took hold.
She woke to movement.
Wyatt’s fingers twitched, then tightened around her hand. His breathing grew shallow, faster, dragging her fully awake. Sarah’s eyes fluttered open at once.
“Wyatt?”
His cracked lips parted, dry skin pulling painfully. His tongue moved against his teeth as he tried to swallow, a faint whimper escaping him as the effort made him wince. His brow furrowed, frustration and need etched deep.
“Sa…” he rasped, the sound breaking apart before it could become a word. “Mm—"
Sarah reacted, knowing what he needed.
She reached for a clean cotton rag and dipped it into the pitcher of water, wringing it out lightly with one hand. She pressed it gently to his mouth, dabbing lightly, letting the water moisten his chapped lips and seep into his mouth.
He responded almost immediately, mouth opening to draw the water in, sucking weakly at the cloth. His swallow came easier this time. His breathing slowed, tension easing from his face.
She dipped the rag again, repeating the motion, patient and unhurried.
“That’s it… easy,” Sarah whispered.
A small, almost imperceptible sound escaped him, a sound of relief, as his grip on her hand loosened. Within moments, his body settled back into the mattress, exhaustion reclaiming him.
Sarah watched him breathe as the night thinned beyond the window. The sky was beginning to pale, dawn still a ways off—but coming all the same, and with it omissions she’d keep from her story to keep a man she didn’t know secret.
To be continued...

Heated Rivalry | S01E05
I know whump is by basically by definition "look at that character in distress. I love them" but I'm currently obsessed with a specific kind of "look at that character in distress. I love them." and it's this:
Male damsels in distress and female knight in shining armor types.
It's so good. SO good. And I'm obsessed specifically with the moments after a rescue where the woman rescues the male and the male is hurt and/or scared and the female comforts them or stands by them protectively after they had just beat the shit out the thing/person who hurt the male and the guy is weak and disoriented and in genuine awe of the woman. I love that kind of shit.
