La Recoleta: A Collection of the ornate, and the plain. Simple and sophisticated. Is it status and station? Family pride? Simple economy or aspects of belief? I do know this is not a cheap cemetery to be buried in and is, I believe, full unless a place is already reserved in a family tomb.
Some of these are surprises - you wouldn’t believe that they were actually family tombs as they are rather inconspicuous compared to many of the other structures in La Recoleta.

Some of the amazing decorative metal sculpting at La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. Look at the scrollwork on the door and the intricacy of the features of Antonio Chiocconi or the figure (Madonna?) adorning Juan Pedro Gaggino’s plaque. This is some serious artistry.

La Recoleta, in Buenos Aires, has some simply beautiful architecture in its tombs. Tombs are often for families and contain a significant number of relatives.
Epitaphs: The Roles we Play
In life, the roles that each of us slips into are numerous. For every interaction, there is a manner. For every situation there is an expectation. For every person, there is a role - whether we appreciate its nature or not. What roles do we play? What roles are we defined by? What roles will we be remembered for?
Do I want my professions chiseled into stone as the definition of who I was? Isn’t that how I define myself to others, at least initially? Hi... I’m [name]. What do I do... well, I’m an [occupational role]. It’s ingrained in us to represent ourselves in this way. But that should never be the limit of who we are.
Perhaps that is why I love this marker so much. Jerry Todd, just like the rest of us, didn’t have to be boxed into that single definition. In fact, I really appreciate that his profession was listed last - and his purpose, as a healer, received precedence over his occupation as an MD.
Furthermore, the ranked role is as it should be, in my opinion. His role as a father placed first on his marker and was probably ranked first in his life, or at least perceived to be by the loved ones who chose to engrave it first. This indicates to me a life well-lived.
A life of family... FATHER
A life with purpose... HEALER
A life of fun and creativity.... MUSICIAN
A life of service... MD
A life well rounded.
More pictures from the Sara Braun Cemetery in Punta Arenas, Chile. Most of the cemeteries visited in Argentina and Chile were like little cities and fascinating in the styles, layouts and histories of the crypts. The charming layout and walkways of the cemetery also made it peacefully park-like. It is well maintained and there were many photos on the graves. Even the smallest of the entombments held a unique charm.

Locally, it seems to be called the Sara Braun cemetery but on findagrave.com and wikipedia it is known as the Cemetery of Punta Arenas, or the local municipal cemetery.
According to Wikipedia: When Sara Braun gave everything for building the entrance of the cemetery, she asked for something. After her death, the central door of the cemetery had to be closed forever. Nowadays, that door is still closed and has not been opened since Sara Braun's death.
Epitaphs: Altruistic Advice
When deciding what epitaph will adorn your marker, what would you choose? I love the fact that in some cases it seems obvious that these decisions were made by those whose names now rest eternally by their quote. It seems much less likely that these sayings were chosen for them - unless they were quoted often in life. Here is one of my favorites:
Just looking at it I thought it might refer to fidelity and friendship. Google Translate schooled me a little more. Animo et Fide is Latin for WITH SOUL AND FAITH... and doesn’t seem to translate well in other Latin-derived languages. Somehow, “With Soul and Faith” was not what I was expecting. However, as an epitaph it struck me as being more advisory than self-reflective, although it could also be both.
In the end, they are excellent words to impart and a good choice for a final say.

The first known coloured/black participant in the modern Olympic Games, he is also the first to win Gold. He participated in the 1900 Paris Olympics as part of the French Rugby Team, which won. Apparently, he also won an award in archery(?). Podcasters from Stuff You Missed in History Class mentioned him as one of the interesting stories from the Olympics which the media has overlooked. Haitian-born, he eventually brought futball to Haiti and served as a Senator in 1950.

This is a profile for Pierre de Coubertin, who was a french Baron and was the father of the modern Olympics. He was also the subject of an excellent Stuff You Missed in History Class podcast - presented LIVE at DMA (see/listen here)... last of his name, though.

First of the Sardaros - which seems italian or peninsular to me. Aparently it is written this way in Chinese: 萨尔达罗!! Top occurrence, according to Namespedia.com, is .... Italy - I was right! USA ranks second. Jean Sardaro Brown was American!!

Jollington seems like an unusual name, and this is its first appearance in wikitree. The only search engine connection seems to be a character played by comedian David Mitchell - Jolly Jollington. I didn’t see any instances of this being an actual name - so I hope I didn’t transcribe it wrong!!
Epitaphs: In Loving Memory
Willamette National Cemetery is a place of peaceful breezes, breath-taking views, rolling hills and graceful remembrances. Among its stones, LOVE is one of the most common subjects of the epitaphs. Of course, it is. We are saluting those that are gone, that are missed and that have taken pieces of our hearts with them. Love is one of the reasons we immortalize them in such locations. Love is one of the bequests we received from them long before their departure. Love is what we choose to remember.
It is the terminology and phrasing of these loving tribute that I find interesting.
A hint of an accent or a habitual phrase. Love coupled with another revealing phrase:
Love, philosophically.
Competitive Love?
Character-Revealing Loves
And Couples Love for Each Other
even in error
Coupled with comments
And leaving us with a loving reminder
Love.
Epitaphs: Final Statements
It is the end for us, but the epitaph is our P.S. For most that means nothing as the epitaph carved in stone will likely be composed by someone else. This, alone, is a good reason to keep the golden rule in mind!
Francis must have made an impression on his family. His life must not have been boring. It might even have inspired a little bit of envy. I hope that I can consider my own life well lived. I do, for the most part, believe that now. I wonder what Francis would’ve said about his own epitaph? Was he satisfied with his life? His family must have thought so.
George must have been nice. A statement like CARING HEART is revealing. He must also have been passionate. At least, that is what I take away from these unique comments left on his memorial.
I don’t know Mr. Evans, yet I take away an impression of the man, long gone, simply because of the comment left by those who knew him. Epitaphs are the post scripts of our lives.
Epitaphs: Pursuing Happiness
I’m transcribing photos that I took during my last visit to Willamette National Cemetery outside of Portland, Oregon. As I wandered after paying a Christmas visit to my mother, epitaphs caught my eye - I have shared some I deliberately photographed already. Funnily enough, several others have become aparrent as I transcribe the photos to genealogy or graving sites. The following, for example, was in an oops-wrong-button video.
Willamette is a National Cemetery - meaning that to be buried there you must either be a veteran of the US Armed Forces or a spouse of one. My mother was both. However, when most people conjure up an image of a typical soldier, they often omit the humanity and humour that accompany them. Given some of the situations soldiers are exposed to and the decisions they are called upon to make - or follow - a serious demeanor and focus are understandable. But humour and hobbies are necessary partial remedies for these more serious times.
Most of the military men and women that I have been privileged to know have also been the most playful and adaptable. Maybe that is because my family never fit into the stereotypical overly-regimented anal-puckering right-wing tv-is-not-reality military household mold. Or perhaps that is because these veterans were strong in the core, dealing with life as it came at them and coping in any way they could. Humour, in my opinion, had to play a significant part in that adaptability.
On the flip-side of the same coin, no one parties like the men and women in uniform. No one could. So having that understanding of the value of life and the appreciation of the freedom to choose what you do in your leisure time may become so deeply ingrained that is begins to define outside perceptions, even by family, of who they were. “Fisherman and woodworker” it says. “19th hole” or my favorite of this bunch, “I’m fine.”
Fine can mean so many things. But yes, I’m fine. And that’s all there is to it.
