Yknow what, screw it. First post in the genshin fandom, and its gonna be about custom elemental reactions, lets go:

Geo + Dendro- Roots: Roots envelop affected enemies, dealing damage over time and slowing them down, both in actions and movement.

Geo + anemo- Sandstorm: Summons a zone around the inflicted enemy, dealing persistent geo damage to all enemies in a small radius, doubled for the progenitor

Anemo + Dendro- Pollinate: Causes flowers to grow on an enemy, creating weak points that deal massive dendro damage when struck. This bonus damage can be carried over into other reactions, so if you were to proc quicken on a pollinated enemy, one of the weakpoints would disappear but the damage will apply to the next instance of aggravate or spread triggered on that enemy.

What advice would you give someone interested in creating Genshin ocs who is ~somewhat familiar with the finer details of Genshin's world?

I would also like to mention that, when I did try in the past, I ran into two issues stemming from the same source, aka Genshin's meticolous nature.

See, because Genshin is so layered, they tend to pull from a variety of source for their characters, which creates for me two main issues:

-Firstly, because Genshin is so layered, it feels nigh on impossible to find a suitable inspiration for an oc. For instance, Mondstadt is not just based off of Germany and German folk tales, but also Arthurian legend. This makes pulling from either of those sources feel redundant because it feels like a much worse version of something already in the games. Which leads me into my second point...

-It makes character creation feel so very daunting because characters tend to pull from those multiple sources. For example, Scaramouche isn't just a reference to Bohemian Rhapsody, isn't JUST a reference to a type of Japanese theatre, but is, at least from what I've read in the fandom, also based off of the Japanese god of wind, Ruin Machines AND the main character of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I understand most of it is probably just fan speculation taken too far, but some of the points they make are very compelling. Now, this isn't an issue for Scaramouche, in fact that makes him seem all the more interesting, but it also raises an almost impossibly high standard for oc creation, at least to me, because I want my ocs to *feel worthy* of Genshin.

Ok, this accidentally turned into more of a rant than anything, but if there's any tips or advice you can give me, it would be very much appreciated.

I will admit finding an answer to that was difficult.

I think if you really want a character to feel believably like it could be on Genshin, you should start by studying the source material. The characters already in the game, their nations, their context within the story, and their inspirations. It's a lot of homework, but it seems to me you're already doing it.

And then, you should choose a theme for your character. Every character in Genshin seems to have a gimmick that defines them. If you carefully plan a gimmick for your OC to set them apart from the others, you will already be making quite a believable Genshin character. Sometimes different characters have the same theme, but present them differently. So you don't have to worry about "stealing" inspiration, so long as you do your own version of it.

I'm sorry if I wasn't of much help. But analyzing the source is always useful, and you seem to be already doing that, which is great.

You know what, it might seem silly but as I was making my last post I started thinking... maybe headcanoning your blorbos as having mental disorders that are demonized by society can be a small way to fight that ableism. Because you learn to research these conditions, and since they're your favorite characters, you see them as the complex people they are, and not as having "bad person disorder".

In honor of me finally posting my genshin oc, I've decided to post my scrapped one too :)

My idea for him was that he was like a dude from Inazuma who traveled between there and Sumeru a lot. I didn't really name him officially, but his temporary name was shohei (I'm not japanese so I tried my best to look for an appropriate name).

He's an electro polearm user and VERY into fishing. His backstory was very loosely fish/water themed.

I might come back to this design but idk, hope yall enjoy !!
