How I, a Thoschei shipper, would fix the 14th Doctor problem.

So we all know Doctor Who wrote itself into a corner by retiring the 14th Doctor on Earth because now every time that something happens on Earth (which is the most common place for big stories to happen) someone will raise the question of why is he not getting involved, and the bigger the issue, specially if the current Doctor is not showing up (like in the war between the land and the sea), the harder it gets to justify it by him just being retired.

So if I could write the continuation of the story, I would bring the Master as the villain for the next special, like get him out of the tooth. He would regenerate on release and it would be John Simm because that is Tennant's Master, but he is after Dhawan!Master, like we see him regenerate and be weirded out and annoyed that he is stuck on Earth with this face again.

His come back would have both 14 and 16 coming to stop him. He would bi-generate at like, mid story, and I would explain that because the Time Lords are really dead this time, that's why the ones that are left are all bi-generating, it's kind of like their DNA trying to save the species.

Then I would divide the story with Simm!Master and 14 on one side and the new master and 16 on the other.

New Master and 16 would keep going with the Master's original plan and have the usual beef you expect from a Master/Doctor episode and end with the Doctor winning, as expected.

14 and Simm would have a completely different story. The Master is exhausted, all the rage and stuff left with his new regeneration and now he's just tired of everything that has been going on, he has been spiraling since the 13th Doctor era and he is now in rock bottom. 14 has had time to process everything that happened and he is ready to once again offer a hand, specially when both of them are hit with nostalgia over how things were last time they saw each other with these faces (The End Of Time). They also actually talk, and the Doctor finds out what happened to Missy, about the Lumiat and how the Master found out about the whole Timeless Child stuff. They make peace and the Doctor decides he has had his time to relax and get better and he is now going to give that to his best friend, so he takes the Master, the TARDIS and they leave to a different planet (idc which one, the Master just doesn't like Earth that much).

They're still retired but like this it explains why 14 is not getting involved every time the Earth is about to be destroyed. He's not on Earth and he still has a happy ending, he's not alone and he gets to save the person he has been trying to save for the longest time. Also the Master has blocked Earth news so 14 never knows what's going on and they live happily ever after while we still have other Doctor and Master to keep going at it through the stars forever.

Time Lord Victorious idea

Okay so this is very non-canon-compliant but. One of my favorite things to imagine with Ten's TLV era is that it A, lasted a lot longer than shown on-screen, and B, changed not just his mental state, but the way he looks and dresses and presents himself, too. Sunken, dark eyes from lack of sleep (and when he does sleep, it's never very well due to nightmares and/or sleep paralysis). Slightly longer, shaggier hair due to him Not Giving A Single Fuck. Tattered trench coat burned by all the fires he's seen take over worlds. Dusty, raggedy Converse that he's worn for three weeks straight. Mouth always turned up in a slight smirk because he believes that he is better. Jacket collar permantently flared reminiscent of the Time Lord robes. More trinkets and jewelry that he's collected from all those worlds he saw collapse, worn proudly because he's not just a survivor, he's the survivor, and he takes that in stride. I think after my first watch yesterday, i was just dumbfounded at how messy everything was but today it finally hit me with full force that aziraphale and crowley as we knew them are gone. their story is over and it did not end with them happy and free and unburdened in the messy and imperfect world we know and love and that realisation has me sobbing uncontrollably. i can't even look at clips of them without crying. i saw an edit of them through the years and it left me feeling hollow. idk i just feel miserable that the broken down and traumatised aziracrow were not able to heal themselves in THIS life and have a happy ending after thousands of years.

These characters have been a huge source of comfort to me. its probably too dramatic to say this but this series was kinda life changing for me. I've watched and rewatched it more times than i can count and now just looking at them fills me with dread and sadness. I hope this feeling gets better eventually.

i don’t think you’re being too dramatic. you’re exactly the right amount of dramatic considering how much aziraphale and crowley have meant to you, over many years. the power of comfort characters is nothing to laugh at, and i’m so sorry you’re feeling this way.

and when you’re ready, know this: we can reject canon. in fact, in the case of go3 it’s even easier to reject it because it’s by default only half canon anyway.

go3 is merely a suggestion. made by fans with a very large budget. and if crowley in the burning bentley has taught us anything, it’s that our minds are extremely powerful when it comes to suggestions.

is the world happy now? is humanity better off without any of them, neither god nor the devil? are there no wars? is there no suffering? crowley’s point was always that the humans could come up with worse things before he had even started a temptation. so like. now we have a universe with only humans, still the same misery, but no protectors on earth (crowley and aziraphale) bringing relief to humans and loving each other

6000 years. they'd been friends for 6000 years and spent the whole time pretending they weren't. they loved each other more than anything else in the universe and they only got a couple of years to live without heaven and hell breathing down their necks after saving the world. they didn't get any time at all to live together with everything out in the open. nightingales might have sang in berkeley square again but they weren't there to hear them. they never got to be an us. after all that.

The destruction of the entire universe and every soul in it is a truly depressing ending. Just because God replaced it with another universe that looked similar doesn't change anything - this is Job and his children all over again. Job doesn't want new children, and neither do I.

mad again. crowley's whole point is that humanity doesn't deserve to suffer for the crimes committed by heaven and hell, so his solution is to create a new universe without angels or demons. sacrificing themselves for humanity, sure, I get it. but what about all the humans who were wiped out with the book of life? god gave them the option of returning all those humans, and instead his solution is to start all over a la the great flood, something crowley was staunchly opposed to. so not only is there no happy ending for crowley and aziraphale, but there's no happy ending for recently corporeal jesus, or mrs sandwich, mr arnold, nina and maggie, adam and the them, newt and anathema. it's job's kids all over again. they didn't want the new children the angels offered them, job and sitis wanted their children back. it's the same choice they gave adam. he wanted things to go back to normal with heaven and hell behaving themselves so he could play with his friends. how could crowley and aziraphale be happy sacrificing their existence knowing it condemns all of the humanity they know and love?
