6 WAYS TO WORKOUT IN SPITE OF BAD JOINTS, ARTHRITIS OR KNEE INJURIES
Too often, a set of lousy knees can get in the way of a good performance. Contrary to popular belief, exercise can be the best medicine if you have achy knees, because strengthening the muscles around the joint protects you from injury by decreasing stress on the knee. But you must use good form and technique when doing exercises for knee pain.

Wearing heals puts your body out of it’s natural stance or alignment. Not to mention the pain and often damage caused to toes, from compression due to pointy toe shoes and twisted ankles resulting from missing a step in your narrow stilettos.

Bows for legs
I always thought my legs look normal, like how you would expect that your fingers would look just like everyone else’s.
About 6 years old, I started ballet. My teacher used to scold me for not standing properly because my knees didn’t touch. She would say, “Suck in your bellies tight and push those legs together”. But I just never could, and so I would get reprimanded for not trying. I tried, and tried, but the knees stubbornly stayed apart - two lovers that were never meant to be.
As everyone else danced, I looked like I was… walking? I can’t describe it, but I was an awkward dancer because I was so conscious of being singled out (repeatedly) for doing it wrong. So I danced, and quit, and missed it, and danced, and quit, and the cycle continued for some time.
Others could walk normally, but I crossed my legs when I walked to cover the gaping hole, like a man covering his bald spot by combing stray ends over. It wasn’t a good cover by any means but it made me a lot less self conscious. I don’t really know when I started doing this, but I distinctly remember a time in primary 6 when I saw a girl walking with her feet pointing out and thinking “how nice”.
Like a different set of fingerprints, my legs were just a different kind of special. I don’t like it, but I stopped thinking so much about it after officially ending my journey with ballet when I was 14. As less people pointed it out, less people noticed it.
A year later, I was watching the Next Top Model (don’t judge me), when a contestant with my kind of legs appeared on the show. I don’t remember why, but Tyra pointed it out (fiercely). I felt a bit better knowing that the model looked good, though not better, in the photo shoots. In someway, it wasn’t a hindrance.
December 2012, when I was in Korea, I saw a billboard advertisement for plastic surgery and aesthetic enhancement. A picture of a girl with legs like mine that then became “normal” again with surgical intervention. My family walked by without a second glance but it struck a chord in me. I was curious of why others were so strongly against my legs all my life.
So I decided once I’m back to search for the medical terminology.
Genu Varum, that’s what I have, and now I have a name to go along with it. Although it does scare me that this is a physical disability of some sort, now that I’m 18, I don’t really find it that frustrating anymore. Plus I can walk, run, jump, its a blessing that I’m slowly growing to accept.
Maybe, just maybe, one day I will love all of me.
