Preorder Ilyas Ahmed's ‘A Dream of Another’ LP

Geographic North is thrilled to announce Ilyas Ahmed's excruciatingly beautiful 'A Dream of Another', a masterful LP of minimalist mantras and slow motion sonatas. For nearly two decades Ahmed has spread out a tapestry of spectacular solitude, somewhere between off-kilter folk and grimly contemporary ambient music. Whether on his own, as a full time member of Grails, or together alongside the likes of Liz Harris (Grouper), Golden Retriever, and most recently Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Ahmed trudges through the murkiest sonic territories with patient consideration. With 'A Dream of Another', the Pakistan-born, Portland, Oregon-based musician sets out an even more oblique path than ever before, eschewing lyrics and vocals, incorporating a solemn drum machine, and charting a series of waking dreams that channel the moods and modes of Loren Connors, Andrei Tarkovsky, ECM, Eraserhead, and Vini Reilly. Stream the lead track "Little Devil" now and preorder the LP on shattered lapis blue vinyl as well as a hyper limited artist edition, featuring unique, hand-torn, cut, assembled, and signed collage by Ilyas Ahmed. A Dream of Another is out October 13th, with LPs shipping mid-November 2023.

Out today! Smoke Point’s debut charts a captivating cruise through heady ambient drifts and ruthlessly rhythmic loop dreams. Composed of Brian Foote (Peak Oil, Leech, Kranky) and Sage Caswell (Spring Theory), the LA-based duo offers five extended, cruise-controlled exercises that calmly violate the Venn diagram's overlap between boundless dance music and unfathomable ambiance.

Opener “Awakening” unfurls a dew laden thrum that blurs into the neon-streaked skitter of “Steam Machine”. A-side closer and album centerpiece “Waterwheel” wastes no time bobbing along a wave of tectonic low ends flecked with oddly angled melodies. “Spawn Point” is pure sunstreaked bliss and wide-eyed glee, colliding with the kaleidoscopic kitsch of album closer “Smiley.”

Tekla Peterson, ‘Heart Press’

Forever an associate of the American avant-garde, Taralie Peterson has been baring her soul on outward-leaning recordings as a solo artist (as Louise Bock and Tar Pet) and with a dazzling array of collaborators (most notably and fruitfully with Ka Baird as Spires That in The Sunset Rise). The Madison, WI based musician now steps out as Tekla Peterson with Heart Press, a garishly gripping set of songs that simmer in a stew of heartbreak and survival. Put simply in Peterson’s own words: “This music came from the fiery flames of pain from the ending of my 20 year relationship.” Matching these previously uncharted emotional areas are Peterson’s experiments with pop structures paired with fruitfully barren arrangements and vivid, pseudo-string textures. No polished ennui or overly gory details, just transcendent beauty and universal emotion.
