As a former practicing Chiropractor, I get asked regularly about how to relieve low back pain (LBP), which I call an acute low back or intense low back pain associated with inflammation. There is nothing like ice and manual manipulation to decrease swelling and relieve pain. However, there is a non-pharmaceutical application that I've used in practice to achieve such measures. This is called the McKenzie protocol or treatment. In Chiropractic school, I was taught that this protocol focuses on relieving the symptoms associated with a disc protrusion as well as diminishing the size of the protrusion all together. I, however, have found that a great level of pain relief can be achieved by following this protocol/treatment even if the LBP is non-disc-related, especially when followed by the application of ice to the affected area. For those suffering from LBP, check out this link to an article in Spine Health on the Mckenzie Protocol/Treatment. It's helped me relieve LBP in myself and others. I hope it helps you too.
