you can call me Gen. 28 and long time Tumblr veteran, I guess (I keep dragging myself back here). What is a fandom space?

Little bit of education considering what unfortunately happened to Agustofwind’s Zero Cycle.

A fandom space is a space for fans to interact. It has no other purpose beyond catering to fandom. Good examples of these are AO3 and Tumblr.

So are Twitter and Tiktok also fandom spaces then? A lot of fans are on there to post content, no?

WRONG.

Twitter and Tiktok have purposes beyond fandom content. There are influencers on tiktok filming their GRWM’s. There are journalists on twitter posting their articles. That is NOT fandom content. And thus they are NOT fandom spaces!

The only thing you will find on AO3 are fics written by fans for fans. Same thing goes for wattpad, fanfiction.net, etc.

Tumblr can be seen as sliiiightly more versatile, but even then it is almost entirely catered to fans! You will not find an athlete or an influencer on here, unless theyre looking specifically for fandom content.

When an author asks to keep their fics in fandom (or rpf) spaces ONLY, that almost always means Tumblr and fanfiction sites themselves.

On twitter you could always mention the premises of a fic or a part of a fic that you liked, or even vaguely recommend it, but you have to do this by NOT sharing the title or author, and instead sending it through private dm’s if someone proceeds to asks for said name in your replies.

#probably the most basic advice I’ve seen on this #so gets a reblog #especially for some younger ppl on here or new to RPF #the basic rule of thumb is just remember these are real ppl. and protect and respect the authors #do what they ask! and don’t be weird. gatekeep the RPF as much you can #be deeply embarrassed but don’t but be embarrassed you know #lmao
