"We found the sledge, and none too soon, and now had three eggs left, more or less whole. Both mine had burst in my mitts"
The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard

We slept not only soundly the greater part of these days and nights, but with a certain numbed pleasure. We wanted something sweet to eat: for preference tinned peaches in syrup! Well! That is the kind of sleep the Antarctic offers you at her worst, or nearly at her worst. (c)

I recently learned an old French euphemism for bisexuality. It means to be powered "by sail and steam," and it absolutely comes from a specific flavor of 19th-century ship.
HMS Terror and Erebus were bisexual, you heard it here first.
Happy Pride!
let's do polar exploration vessel gijinkas. take my hand.
"Though Cook is remembered today—if he is remembered at all—as the charlatan who lied about reaching the North Pole, he may yet find redemption in the next phase of human exploration: manned missions to Mars....When we do reach Mars, we will, in some small part, have Cook to thank."
-Madhouse at the End of the Earth, Julian Sancton
Frederick Cook's observations from the Belgica expedition, of the psychological impact of wintering over trapped in the Antarctic ice pack and his attempts to keep the crew alive and mentally sound, are still used as a behavioral case study for extended space travel conditions.

i think abt adrien de gerlache so often. man of all time. i feel like a big reason he isnt as ubiquitous on polarblr as amundsen for example is simply that people dont know abt him bc he is literally the most pathetic sopping wet little meow meow you can imagine
Got chained to the mast and flogged again #classicblunder
once again on websites god herself doesn't know about "although the cook society worked cooperatively with bryce and gave him permission to quote from cook’s papers, which they control, they attacked the book’s conclusions as false and written to a planned agenda" I ❤️ UNBIASED SOURCES AND THE TRUTH
