“You’ve never been here before?” Georgia asked, surprised. She watched the other girl for a moment before deciding it didn’t matter. “Thank you for bringing me here,” she said.

River nodded, grinning. She gave the shop one more perfunctory glance, then headed for the exit. Serenity would probably finish fueling soon. It was time to go.

"You're leaving?" Georgia asked, following the other girl out. 

She slipped a copy of Maya Angelou's I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings out as well. She knew she'd never be able to afford it, but it was too beautiful to leave behind. She couldn't afford to get caught stealing either, but Georgia wasn't thinking too much about that when she stole it.

“I have a writer,” she said, before she really thought about what she was saying. “John Locke? Oh, and I don’t have any paper with me, so if you want me to write the recipe down, you’ll have to supply some.” She paused a moment, then she felt inexplicably guilty that she wasn’t better prepared. “Sorry.”

“Oh that’s fine. You’re better prepared than most who come in here.” He smiled, “Come over to the desk…” He motioned for her to follow as he began to plod away.

Georgia mutely followed where she was led, thinking. Better prepared? Really? How more ill-prepared could she possibly be? More than likely she was just a better liar.

The man who approached her was… well, he wad smaller than she was used to. But he also looked like he could beat her up easily. 

“No,” she said carefully, wondering what she wanted to ask him. Georgia didn’t want to look like a moon brain, but she was probably going to have to. “I have no idea where I am. Where am I?”

She hesitated for a second before adding, “Perhaps more importantly, is there anything dangerous nearby that I should know about?”

“There’s nothing dangerous around.”

Fili smiled, rising to his feet again and offering her a hand to help her get up.

“These are the Blue Mountains, and you are close to my uncle’s halls. I’m Fili, son of Dís, nephew of Thorin Oakenshield, king under the mountain.”

Without a mountain, he added in his thoughts.

“Well, there might be a few drunks around, but nothin’ that could pose a real danger, I guess…”

Georgia bit her bottom lip and nervously twisted her ring around her finger. None of what he said sounded familiar. The blue mountains? Didn't make any sense. And a king? Under a mountain? No place in the Verse had any kings. 

She needed more information but didn't want to ask any more questions. The more she revealed her ignorance, the more this Fili would think to take advantage of it.

She continued twisting her ring around her finger and thought. She needed the basics. Food, water, shelter. It would require giving up a little more of her pride. "Well... I think I need help. I'm a cook, so if you need one, or know of someone who needs one, I'll gladly work in exchange for room and board, at least until I get my bearings."

And then she could get off of this rock. Georgia was never happy working on the dirt. People living planet-side were all too stagnant, and they expected you to stay in one place. Working on a ship meant she could travel around as much as she wanted.

Georgia slowed down after she got the first batch of sausage rolls in the oven. Even so, she still had about ten minutes before the first batch would be ready and she could but the second batch in. 

Seeing no point in preparing a third batch until the first was out, the cook covered her baking sheet with a towel and walked up on deck. 

It was such a calm morning. She went to the railing and felt the Etherium ruffle her hair. Georgia took a deep breath and enjoyed the moment. She tried to ignore the little corner of her mind that reminded her it was perfect pirate weather.

They didn’t have any cargo yet, she reminded herself. Pirates didn’t strike ships without cargo.

Tarzan spots Georgia out on the deck and a small smile tugs at his lips. “Firefly!” He calls to her. “Shouldn’t you be making us breakfast?” He asks her in a teasing tone. Despite his dreams the pleasant morning has lighten his mood, and he feels more like himself once more.

"It's in the oven," Georgia said, not turning to look at him. She wished he wouldn't call out that stupid nickname so loudly.

"If you keep calling me that, I'm going to have to retaliate, you know." People didn't usually think about this, but there were all sorts of ways a cook could seek revenge. It didn't have to be something drastic like poison. She could just accidentally (on purpose) burn or scorch the captains food. Over-spice it. Under-spice it.

Dancing

Georgia used to like dancing. She was never very graceful, and she always thought she looked incredibly dorky and stupid when she danced.

She hardly ever danced where people could see, but dance she did. Jerky movements to music that weren't supposed to look good. It took the pent up energy out of her muscles and made her smile. 

She doesn't do that anymore. These days, when she feels the need to move, she practices punching and kicking instead. She's just as bad at self defense as she is at dance, but this is a more practical use of her time.

It's not about smiling anymore.

Fili had just been on his way home from the ‘Forge’ - which was, of course, not a real forge, but his and Kili’s favourite tavern, cleverly disguised by its owner to provide a place of refuge for people wanting to escape a hard day’s work but without having to lie at anyone when claiming that they had been… at the forge.

The evening was still young and the sun had hardly set when he slowly walked towards home, quietly humming to himself.

He stopped humming, however, when his look fell upon a young woman sitting right in the middle of the road.

After a short moment of hesitation, he approached.

“Hello there…? D’you need any help?”

She seemed human, but not actually hurt, only confused.

“‘ave ya been robbed or somethin’…?”

Book of Mysteries | ofteaandmagic

The smell of dust and old paper was heavy in the air as Georgia poked through the library's dusty shelves. She was surprised by the size of this library's occult section, and it certainly looked promising. 

When the book dealer had told her how much he'd be willing to pay for the book Libro Mysteriis, she'd been unable to resist looking in every library and book shop she stopped in. Normally she only looked for things she wanted to read, but this book would buy her a theft free life for at least a year, maybe two if she continued to work as a ship's cook.

Or, she could use the money to buy her life back. She didn't know how she would go about doing that, but not being so abjectly poor would be a good start.

Her eyes alighted on an unassuming book, it's cover made of blue fabric and worn around the edges. Libro Mysteriis was printed in faded black letters on the spine. Was this it? Georgia snatched it off the shelf and flipped to check the copyright date in the front of the book. 1933. 

This was it.
