Alvin Ailey Research part 1
1) Where and when was Ailey born?
Alivin Ailey was born on January 5th 1931 in Texas, Rogers in the USA.
2) Provide some information about his parents and his upbringing.
He lived with his Mother who was Lula Ailey and gave birth at the age of 17 and his father also called Alvin but left and abandoned them when Alvin was 6 months old. He had a rough upbringing being to him as being African American and during the Racial segregation and during the Great Depression in America and Alvin and his mother had a hard time finding work. In 1942, Ailey’s mother migrated to Los Angeles, California, where she heard of work supporting World War two. Ailey at age 11 joined his mother by train, having stayed behind in Texas to finish out the school year.
3) Discuss the racial situation when Alvin was growing up and how he used thi’[s within his dances In the town he lived in Blacks was separated from Blacks such as Schools and Theatres which made him feel seperated from others
He this piece ‘Masakela Language’ which shows the experience of being black in South Africa and what it is like.
4) Where did Ailey first become interested in dance?
After seeing the Ballet Russe de monte carlo perform, Ailey was inspired and interested so he then pursued a career in dance.
5) Who did Ailey study with when he started dance?
Ailey studied with choreographer Lester Horton around modern dance in 1949 and then joined his dance company that year.
6)What musicals/dance pieces has Ailey performed in?
He first performed in Truman Capote’s musical House of flowers and also appeared in The carefree tree and Ailey served as the lead dancer in another Broadway musical,Jamaica, starring Lena Horne and Ricardo Montalban in 1957.
7)What dance pieces is Ailey most well known for choreographing?
He was well known for his major early works which was Revelations, which drew inspiration from the African American music of his youth. His others were Blues Suite and Masakela Language.
8) Ailey was influenced by many styles of dance. Modern, Jazz, Ballet and African American were his favorites. What dance practitioners influenced him from each style?
He was influenced by many choreographers with different various of dance furthermore one of them was Lester Horton who focused on modern dance and African american. Ailey was also influenced by George Balanchine who was a practitioner of Ballet. Jack Cole was a practitioner of Jazz and influenced Ailey aswell.
9) Give a brief description of some of these influences and discuss how they influenced Ailey
Horton mentored and teached Ailey in Modern dance and also asked him to be apart of his dance company.
George Balanchine was a practitioner of Ballet. He was the co-founder of american Ballet he was also a artistic director and chief choreographer of the New York City Ballet. He has created 465 pieces of work which have been performed by nearly every ballet company in the world.
Jack Cole developed Jazz-Ethnic-Ballet that is a major dancing style in today’s, films, televiisionmusicals. His film work includes ‘Cover Girl’, ‘On the Riveria’ and ‘Designing Woman’.
This is better work Jack however question 3 needs more detail as it is the discussion of the historical context behind the dance.
Alvin Ailey research part 2
1) What style of dance is Ailey’s Revelations.
Alvin Ailey’s revelations peace is a contemporary dance and shows African american ballet and jazz.
2) What is Revelations about?
It is about grief and isolation such as slavery and prejudice. It is also about his childhood aswell and the dance peace also simbolises hope
3) Ailey has been influenced by many dance practitioners and it is recognized within his work. Who are these people and what style of dance do they use? In 1949 Ailey joined Hollywood studio of Lester Horton, Horton helped and he was Ailey’s influence and Horton was his mentor and that where his style of dance came from.

5) Are there any themes used within the piece? If so, what are they?
Yes it shows American dance and shows contemporary and also can show emotion such as relief and hope.
6) Why did Ailey choreograph Revelations? He did this to show how he was growing up and how it felt for him as he said ‘blood memories’ and growing up in Texas and the baptist church.
7) What type of music did Ailey use? Why did he use this music? In revelations Ailey uses African American gospel music this is to show grief and has a slow tempo to it with a slight contrast of happiness and sadness.
8) What are the three sections of revelations called? Explain the theme of each section.
This is not enough detail to pass jack. You need to describe the key features of the piece by finding photos of the piece and DESCRIBE THEM. A lot of detail into the context of the dance, what it is about, the intentions behind the piece. It is also incomplete as you have not answered all questions.
