The terrifying view 73 stories above Los Angeles

If you’ve been anywhere near downtown, you’ve seen cranes towering above the city, as what soon will be the tallest building west of Chicago has gone from ground level to scraping the sky. 

Our video team wondered: What’s it like way up there, nearly 1,000 feet above Los Angeles? 

So we enlisted the help of the people who work up there. Over four days, three workers were given GoPros to wear during their shifts. Two were crane operators, and one was a regular steel worker. This vertigo-inducing view is what they saw. 

We used a special rig to attach the camera to their hard hats so that it didn’t get in the way. And since the guys were all the way at the top, they couldn’t just leave to return the GoPros to us. Instead, they’d summon the ball of the crane to their window, attach the GoPro to it, and lower it all the way to the road. In fact, if you watch closely, you see one time they did that in the video. It’s an amazing (and frightening) shot.
