I’m so tired of hearing takes on why Lizzo faces the backlash that she does because almost everyone is disingenuous. They either pretend it’s ONLY because she’s fat and black or they pretend it couldn’t possibly have anything to do with racism or fat phobia, and the real answer is both.

Racism and fat phobia undoubtedly shape the narrative here, but to pretend that Lizzo herself hasn’t fed into some of the backlash and/or invited the backlash at times is just ridiculous. She’s put herself into a few situations where there should’ve been SOME backlash, but racism and fatphobia ratcheted that “Some” up to “A lot”.
