[Weekly OST] GFRIEND SINB "Sinb’s version of 'Loveable', Sweet charm" (Interview)
“Weekly OST” is a corner where we would talk about the OST released within a week that draws our attention amongst the one released this week.
“I’m hoping a lot of people to have ‘Oh, Sinb also have this sweet and fluttering emotion too’ kind of reaction.” GFRIEND’s Sinb who sings an OST for KakaoM Original Drama ‘A Love So Beautiful’ said.
Sinb’s ‘Loveable’ is a remake of a hit song by Kim Jongkook that was released in 2005.
Sinb told E-Daily, “I feel honored to sing a remake song that I listened a lot since I was a child and I also feel happy to be given the chance to sing an OST.”

Sinb gives a different charm and emotion to the song who tells a story about the thrill of first love with her clear voice. The Melo-mance Jung Donghwan who received a lot of love with songs such as ‘Gift’, ‘Greetings’, ‘Festival’ was in charge of the arrangement of the song.
Sinb said, “I remember I have a lot of thoughts about how should I sing a very well-known song with my own feeling.” She added, “I want people to feel the ticklish and emotional feeling when the song comes out in the drama. I focus on that point when I sing it.”
The drama "A Love So Beautiful" is a romance that depicts the story of Shin Sol-yi (So Ju-yeon), a cheerful high school girl, Cha-Heon (Kim Yo-han), his next-door childhood friend, and friends who shared their youth with them for 17 years. "Loveable" sung by SinB was made as Shin Sol-yi's theme song. The song lyrics match Sol-yi's feeling where she found Cha-Heon is lovely from head to toe.
SinB looked back on the preparation process, saying, "I looked up YouTube videos so that I could capture my emotions well in the song, and I also asked my friend who enjoys watching dramas." She added, "As much as I tried to sing the song as sweet as possible, I hope people who listen to the song will feel fluttered.”
‘Loveable is released on January 18, 2021. Not only the song, but they also release a video of the recording and an interview. Sinb said, “I haven’t sing an OST for a long time, I hope Buddy will listen to it. And I also hope that you can spend the upcoming spring freshly with my version of ‘Loveable’.“
“After finishing the year-end concert, I enjoy my days off and doing my best to take care of myself while preparing for the next promotion.” Sinb explained. There are a lot of times when I got a goosebumps listening to GFriend's song because it was so good but I was so pleasantly surprised when I listened to this existing song part remake (?) because I think it was the first time. How can you fill the rap part with such a beautiful melody...!
So, at first I thought that the composer did such a good arrangement...but after I looked at the title you are the one who changed the melody and lyrics yourself! Oh my god...I can't believe this perfect lyrics and melody came from Yuju! It was so surprising that I opened my mouth.
'Spring is Gone By Chance' has been released for 5 years without we realized it but I like the song that it's the first thing I look for and listen everytime spring comes, and the fact that Yuju did the remake makes me liking it more. It's so good that it's not an exaggeration but I've been listening to it for over than 50 times today...
Especially on the part 'I walk around this path dragging my tired body~' I really really like the 'walk↗ around↘" part! And also the 'The blowing wind, without I know, always' part, I don't know why the emotion of each and every word makes me feel emotional. Yuju who think about this kind of melody is sure a genius♡
Also at 'I miss you, I close my eyes again', 'I want to send you this song' etc. The lyrics are so beautiful together with the melody that it makes my heart flutter. This perfect melody and lyrics, plus Yuju's voice...this is without favorably a masterpiece in the music industry. I hope you release the official audio of it!

SOWON：This song has a lot of story built into it so please focus on the lyrics when you listen！
YERIN：During performances there's a part in the choreography where we show off the crossroads part. Don't miss it.
EUNHA：It's a song where you can really empathize with the feelings of a confused girl. Please pay attention to the delicate voices of the members！
YUJU：For my initial impression, the song caught me right from the start. They let us listen to it in the meeting room at first and my first thought was that I wanna do this song right away！Both the lyrics and the choreography are very impactful in my opinion.
SINB：From the very first time I listened to Crossroads I felt that it was the kind of song that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. As for what to pay attention to, I want you guys to focus on Yuju's final part！
UMJI：The more you listen to the song the more you appreciate its charm, I feel. The final guitar solo really gets me as well.
🍀「Crossroads」MV was shot like a drama, was there any interesting episodes during filming, please let us know！
SOWON：When we were filming for the fireworks it was really cold that day so our managers prepared heaters for us. But one of the heaters actually managed to burn Yuju's pants！It was so shocking that there wasn't anything to do but laugh.
YERIN：During the scene when I submerged myself underwater, I had these green hair extensions on, so when I went underwater the dye sort of turned the clear water in the tub green as well. We had to really rush filming that part before it turned even greener.
EUNHA：There's a part where they film me at various points in the timeline where the room is destroyed around me, and I had to keep my eyes wide open and stand there without moving while this was going on. But with all the stuff breaking and falling behind me, I couldn't help but blink at some point and I felt really bad for the staff because we had to redo itㅠ🥺
YUJU：During the aquarium filming, there was this one fish that kept staying in that one specific spot without moving away. I thought it was really cute so I took a photo of it.
SINB：During the first filming session for the music video, I had to film my solo angle shot on top of a roof. It rained all night until morning that day, so it was freezing and the wind was so strong that it kept blowing my hair into my face so it couldn't be seen. I tried my best to not express how cold it was, and thankfully on the final cut it worked out pretty well.
UMJI：During the campfire scene with the members, I was worried about the cold at first but the campfire was so nice and warm that we were able to finish filming that scene without feeling like we were freezing.

🍀It's been 5 years since your debut, please tell us which moment it was that felt like a major crossroads decision for your life！
SOWON：Before I joined this company, that time I spent worrying about what to do with my life was my crossroads moment I think.
I was in an acting focused agency and they tried casting me about 3 or 4 times. I did consider working towards an acting career but even after the agency called me into a meeting to decide my future, I was unable to fully let go of my dream to become a singer.
YERIN：When I had to decide on my high school path, I was torn between going to a performing arts focused school or just going to a regular high school, but I figured that if I didn't at least try it out I'd regret it, so I went for the performing arts school. Thankfully I was accepted to the school of my choice as well.
EUNHA：Probably during my high school days. I had a choice between staying a student and figuring out what else I wanted to do with my life after that, or enter this agency and prepare for debut. But now I feel like I really chose well back then!
YUJU：It was right before I joined this agency I think. There was a point where I wanted to give up on being an idol and branch into songwriting instead, but then I heard about the auditions for this agency and I really spent a long time thinking about which path to take before making my decision.
SINB：Umm… Actually isn't life itself a kind of crossroads? Whether it's when you're deciding on what to eat, whether or not to eat it, isn't that a kind of crossroads moment all the time？（lol）
UMJI：When I had to decide whether or not to enter this agency as a trainee！

🍀For Labyrinth's dance you had a bunch of backup dancers participating as well, please tell us how that felt！
SOWON：When we first heard the song I felt like it wasn't our usual style at all. But it was the kind of tune I like personally so I was interested already, and when the choreography for it came out I felt like it made the song even more perfect.
YERIN：It wasn't a song about your personal ego and it was interesting trying to process the many conflicting feelings within the song. Having this many dancers on stage with us made it very crowded but I feel like it brought out the GFRIEND charm even more during the performance.
EUNHA：It was a song with a lot of backup dancers, so you really have to watch the performance instead of just listening to the song on its own！
This might actually be the most powerful GFRIEND performance among our songs k feel. I really love it🥰
YUJU：When I first saw the choreography video, I had a moment of 「Wow, how am I going to dance to that？」because it left such a strong impression. But with every practice, the more I studied the choreography, the more interesting it got.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dancers who filled the stage with us as well.
SINB：When I was listening to the song, I really hoped that the choreography would look cool as well, and it turned out to be something amazing and quite unlike the usual GFRIEND style. You'll definitely fall in love with the song even more after watching the performance.
UMJI：This performance is where you see GFRIEND at their most powerful I think. The expressions of the members were even cooler than I imagined on stage, and I think we did really well expressing the essence of the song. It's really a song that allows you to discover a different side of GFRIEND.

① At the beginning part of Crossroads, the part where Sowon had her eyes closed really made her look like a goddess！When you saw this part of the choreo, did you think「This could be a new charm point！」？
⇒Nope！Actually because I'm so tall, I kinda felt bad because I was totally kind of covering SinB who was behind me. I spent a lot of time worrying about the pose. Since I had my eyes closed I had to wonder if I lowered myself enough？But I'm glad it all worked out in the end.
② In the MV, the car scene sparked a lot of comments that you looked like a movie star. How do you personally feel about this, were you satisfied by your acting and the atmosphere of the scene？
⇒ For my character, the stylists went with a darker style to express the atmosphere and it was really refreshing for me, I really liked it！
During the filming, the car wasn't all that big but we still had to fit the camera in there somehow, and I wasn't sure if the camera would be able to film me at my best angle, but I'm glad that in the final cut I turned out looking great.

① You had to go underwater for the MV in one scene, are you good at submerging yourself like that？
⇒I learned how to swim from a young age, so going underwater wasn't hard at all, but the problem here was that I had to submerge myself while lying down in the tub, so lots of water kept entering my nose and it was kinda hard.
② The green hair extensions really left an impression, and you also wore a beret as well. But there were also performances where you didn't wear a beret, which did you prefer, with or without it？
⇒If I really had to choose I honestly prefer the performances where I had the beret on. I'm really happy I got to show different sides of myself though！

① We were all surprised by your change in hair colour. How did you feel when you heard that you had to dye your hair pink this time？
⇒ Dyeing your hair is troublesome…that was my first thought！But I really like this colour and now I kinda don't want to change it to other colours now😭
② Among the fans there are comments that your hair colour and styling in this MV makes you look even more like the protagonist of a manga or anime, do you feel that way too？And if you were really a manga protagonist what genre would you be？
⇒ Personally I feel like I'd be the protagonist of a magical girl story. To defeat evil as a pink haired heroine..😎

① You had to run around a lot in the video, please tell us how you felt then！
⇒ Not all of it was actually included in the final cut of the music video but I totally ran way more than was shown. The director kept telling me to run faster so I really ran with all my heart！
② Also, the parts in the choreography where you cover your face with your hand, as well as the part where your hands were trembling, everyone realized it really added to the emotions of the song and the fans all went crazy for it！Is there anything else we should pay attention to in the dance as well？
⇒ Actually I didn't even realize it myself at first. It was only when I was checking the replay in the monitor that I realized my hands were shaking then. I was really focused on the lyrics in my part so it just came out naturally like that. I was really surprised that the fans were able to catch such a tiny detail as well！I'll definitely continue focusing hard on the lyrics in the future for all other performances as well！

① There was a parrot in the MV with you guys. As a dog owner, do you like birds too？
⇒ I'm not actually good with birds. Bugs, reptiles, birds, I'm kinda scared of them so I can't really deal with them…
② There's a lot of difficult dance moves this time round！Which one was the most difficult according to main dancer SinB？
⇒ To be honest Crossroads was probably the most difficult choreography to express correctly so far in my life.
It'd be way too easy to mess up on the choreo if I wasn't careful enough, so I really worried about how best to dance to it.

① In the MV you and Yuju were on bad terms. You guys are normally really good friends, was it hard to act out this part？
⇒ Thankfully the music was always playing in the background so I just had to focus on「the conflict」. But the moment the director yelled Cut! both of us would just end up bursting out laughing.
② Everyone was talking about how Umji's outfits for Crossroads really made you look like a princess！Which one was your favourite though？
⇒ I really liked the dress I wore for the jacket shooting, and I really like wearing a jacket over a shirt like that！！I also thought the white blouse with navy stripe outfit was really good！！

It has been more than 5 years since GFriend’s debut.
Teamwork is as important as group activity is more important than individual activity. We’re really close (with each other) like sisters. Instead of being considerate and not saying what needs to be said, I say what I want to say every time.
Looking at the album cover, the atmosphere changes a lot this time.
When dancing on the stage, we didn’t really care about the trend and just wore something fit to our body, but this time we make a bold attempt. I was worried that I will look like a ‘어깨 깡패 (lit. shoulder gangster, meaning having a broad shoulder)’ with an over-sized jacket but unexpectedly it looks stylish on the screen. When we were doing the jacket shoot, I also wore loose shirtdress something that I unusually wear and everyone said it looks awkward but it came out good in the picture. I look good with this look so I wore boyish white shirt on stage too. Music obviously, but we also try a new challenge with fashion.
The name ‘GFRIEND’ is friendly but in another side, it’s also hard to search.
Personally, I feel bad. The group name obviously, and my name ‘Sowon (lit. wish)’ are words that are commonly used. If you search ‘GFRIEND Sowon’ results that are not related to me, come out a lot. I hope there is a technology where we can search exactly what we want to search. I mean so that the person who wants to know us can find something only about us.
GFRIEND has a similar fans gender ratio, right?
About 6:4. Actually since we were debuted, I was worried if the female fans would have a prejudice because of our group name. It felt like we only aim for male fans but actually it also has the meaning that we want to be a good friend for female fans. But thank god as we do promotion we can worry about it less.
Is there any keyword that you want to be titled to GFRIEND?
For me, I always wanted ‘Improving GFRIEND’, ‘Cool GFRIEND’, but now I want ‘GFRIEND is GFRIEND’. Bang Sihyuk CEO said to us recently, “GFRIEND do the music only GFRIEND can do and I want to hear ‘As expected, GFRIEND is GFRIEND’”

What is the performance concept for the title song ‘Crossroads’?
We have a choreo that represent crossroads. If you see our performance, you can recognize what I mean right away.
Because all members are the youngest in your family, living together must have ups and downs.
Maybe because we spend time together, we become like a family and good friends now. Each member is different but there is someone who I’ve been friends for more than 10 years. Actually, when we’re together is the most comfortable and fun time. I’m thinking ‘Where can we meet friends like this?’
When members have different opinion, how do you manage it?
Actually, I really hate dispute and tend to follow the majority opinion. When I’m not certain of something, following the majority opinion is not bad. I’m not the decisive type so, if this seems right, I’ll choose this, but If I feel that I’m right, I’ll choose that.
What is the thing only GFRIEND can do?
I think GFRIEND is really good at expressing the concept that suitable for that age. When we were debuted, we were still minors but without our notice, we’re already at our 20s now. Now, it feels like the girls with school uniform concept is growing and standing on a different road. I think we’re going with something matches our age.
Is there any lyrics you like from GFRIEND songs?
I always say this but I like, “I’m definitely not going to break” part from Glass bead. I also like members’ young voice, and it looks like the lyrics contain our ambition. Just like the lyrics, we don’t want to break till the end. We’ll definitely not break!
Is there any change with the early debut days?
Long before, going to the broadcasting station, standing on the stage, standing in front of fans, everything was for the first time. Because it was the first time, I still couldn’t get used to it. But now, I think I’m getting proactive, ‘I should do this during this (situation).’ My attitude changed.

GFRIEND does more group activity than individual activity.
I think everyone wants to have a solo/individual activity. But we decided to focus more on this album promotion as a team.
GFRIEND lyrics are so lyrical.
When I keep thinking while listening to the songs, we have a lot of touching songs. Especially for me, I like Eunha unnie’s part ‘All the moments I’ve been waiting for pass by today. The night where I endlessly chasing for you. The night I can’t reach where I miss you.’ in ‘Time For The Moon Night’. The melody is good, the whole song composition is also good. As we perform it, I get touch with it.
What do you think people expect from GFRIEND?
As we take up various concepts, I think a lot about what we should do next. I saw the comments, they said this is the most GFRIEND-like album. There are a lot who say that only GFRIEND can do express the concept of overflowing emotion. I think GFRIEND’s color is firm in front of public’s eyes. And without throwing away that expectation, we want to show you our growth. A well grown GFRIEND.

If you have to introduce this album concept?
This album has 2 themes. ‘Coming back(回)’ and also ‘Labyrinth’ with a meaning of a maze. That’s why the album name is 〈回:Labyrinth〉. It’s painting the growing up story of the girls from the debut days until now, and in the process of growing up, while looking back at the pure days and thinking about what to do next, we come into a conflict. It’s similar with our real situation, and also something we want to tell.
Rather than team, I think there are times when you want to show your personal talent.
We didn’t really show each of our personality on our early debut days but as time goes by each of our personality become more distinct. We are on different broadcasts but on the same frequency. Even we have different disposition our code matches well. So, I think we found the common ground well.
Is there any lyrics you like in GFRIEND’s songs?
I like the first line from ‘Fever’ refrain, ‘I want to show you right at this moment without regret.’ There’s no strong word in that phrase, and it’s just a simple words combination, but I can feel the ambition and strength from it. In that part, Eunha unnie’s voice seems soft but it feels solid and powerful. It also contain something GFRIEND wants to tell. ‘Fever’ choreo is intense but, when I listen to that part and start performing, I just ‘Right, let’s show it without regret!’ and make up my mind.
Among the nickname given for GFRIEND, what is your favorite word?
Trust and listen to GFRIEND. Other group’s fans also said that. We changed company last year* but I haven’t felt it until before the preparation of this album. Our company changed but the compositions are the same so, there is no big change. But while preparing for this album, we got support from the company and Bang Sihyuk CEO also participate in the album making so I thought that we can show a better side.

GFRIEND is a group with a definite concept.
Our choreo is originally intense. We keep the intensity in this album too but also I think it’s a stage where each part can show our individual performance.
The strong teamwork is also famous, right?
Actually, there’s no one without persistence and ambition. Everyone has their own ambition but when we have to choose something as a group, we think differently (throwing the personal ambition). GFRIEND is not mine but belong to all the six of us. So, most of the decision made by majority vote. But it doesn’t mean that we ignore the minority opinion, if that opinion seems right, we’ll listen to flexibly and make a good choice. So, at some point we don’t think about ‘why we don’t make the decision my way.’ Each member has her own skill, we’ll try to listen the opinion from someone who’s good at it. Fortunately, our team has a good distribution of talent.
What do you think when it comes to ‘GFRIEND’s only color’?
Start from something small like, we used a lot of pretty expression in the lyrics with our language. To the point where there are lyrics published in textbooks. Among the lyrics in ‘Crossroads’, when I sing ‘No matter where I go, it all turns into you’, when I listen to it, and when I just looking at the phrase it’s good. Also, I heard that GFRIEND’s vocal is agitating. It looks like you’re doing it together as you listen to it. The vocal and the strength on the choreo are different. I think something like that is the GFRIEND only color.

The teaser video came out before the photoshoot. The response is very good.
Among the lyrics that came out on the teaser of the title song ‘Crossroads’ this time, ‘Even if perhaps you pass by quickly/I’ll find you/Then I’ll go back to you’, I don’t have the feeling of really liking it when I recorded it. But when it comes out on the music video together with the song, I feel like it really suits and really well expressed lyrics.
Do you have something you feel bad about the group name?
At first I do, but now I like it. Actually, before debut I was worried whether we can express the group ‘GFRIEND (girlfriend in korean)’ beyond the common word or not. I thought that it would be hard because it’s something used commonly. And now because people see the common ‘여자 친구(girlfriend)’ and GFRIEND differently, I think that we picked the group name well. Besides, it’s a name really suits us.
Which nickname given to GFRIEND that you like the most?
B-sides matjib (lit. place with good food)? I like that it means not only the title song is good but also the be-sides of the album.
GFRIEND express the song and performance that match the age, right? After few decades, can we expect to see 60 y.o GFRIEND?
Uhmm. If we are all vigorous? Haha. We’ll have to see!
