Question: when people leave their tumblr on a fic, do they *really* want readers to talk to them? I don't know... i've thought about doing it before but it's always seemed kind of strange to just go up and be some stranger sending messages to someone on tumblr. Especially if their fic is old. Like is there a time limit on those sort of "feel free to talk to me about _fanbase_! i'm at _url_" things in A/Ns? It would be weird to get messages like a year after posting it, right?
Nope. It would not be weird at all.
Writers love the stories they’ve written sort of like children. They were created with love and each one has a special place in their heart. They’d very likely love to talk to you about their story or their writing in general whenever you happen to see it.
There’s really no time limit on giving your encouragement and support to your favorite writers.

I’ve had almost as much people sending me a message or starting a chat about my fics here on tumblr then i’ve had people leaving comments on ao3. (I guess they were more comfortable on this platform? dunno). And i’ve been delighted every single time! and even maintain loose contact (or friendship in one case) with some. So yeah, go for it, it’s a really cool way to give and get feedback!
As an author, it would delight me to pieces to have someone come and start a conversation, either about my fic or tangentially about my fic and leading into fandom. As a reader, I have done that one fics (with extensive reviews on the fic or by following to their tumblr) and have made some good friends that way. Either situation, highly recommend.
Also agreeing that as a writer I would be 100% okay with this.
Plus, AO3 doesn’t have any kind of direct message or inbox system yet for non-comment material. So if you want to have a meaningful or private discussion, people need to take the conversations elsewhere. You can only do so much in comments.
It’s also a great way to engage with writers in the fandom but for non-writing content! Fanart, meta discussion, gifs, videos, etc are easier to see on other platforms than AO3. It’s fun to share them. And even for writing, sometimes writers will put content on other platforms like tumblr that they don’t put on their AO3. I know I’ve done writing challenges and prompts on tumblr that take months to make it to AO3, if they do at all, because they sometimes don’t feel polished enough or like they fit properly into the ‘completed’ AO3 material I have.
In short, yes yes yes–talk to your favorite writers if they give you their tumblr. They want to hear from you!
