Jynessa had wondered when she would catch a glimpse of another fellow Dornishman, or in this case a woman, and she was fairly acquainted with lady Nymella Toland. In fact, all of Dorne was acquainted with her, as her gardens were said to be the most beautiful in all of Sunspear. Nessa noticed the fire-haired woman talking to someone, but the usual amused spark was gone from her eyes and she appeared to be stifling the boredom from seeping through her features. She smiled at the image in front of herself and wondered if lady Nymella would appreciate her interrupting them.
She couldn’t know unless she tried, so she glided towards the older woman, a wide smile gracing her features. “Lady Toland! It is such a pleasure to see you here.” She exclaimed, her smile widening as she laced her arm through Nymella’s. “Do pardon me, I hope I’m not interrupting anything?” She smirked, looking at the lord lady Toland was speaking to, her eyebrow arched as if to tempt him to dare and say she was interrupting.
---
Her rescuer’s voice was a familiar one. Nymella had barely managed to turn her head to greet her savior, when the woman snaked her arm through hers. The Toland smirked, looking absolutely delighted at the sight of Jynessa Blackmont. “Lady Blackmont, it has been ages.” She noticed with a kind smile, her eyes resting upon the brunette. She was quite grateful for the interruption, because if she had to listen some more about the lord’s gout and his wife’s excessive appetite for sour cod, she would probably say something she might regret later.
As she turned to the lord to excuse them both, she had found that the man was already muttering an excuse and shaking his head at lady Jynessa’s words. Nym’s smirk grew as she turned back to her more enjoyable companion. “Lady Jynessa, I cannot thank you enough for intervening. Please, do me the courtesy of walking with me. These gardens are no Dorne, but they are pleasurable enough.”

Her comment that she was no longer bored brought a smirk to Aurane’s lips, and he chuckled lowly. “That gladdens me, my lady. It was hardly my intention to subject you to more of the same.” His silver brows raised as she countered that a man should be bold, and he laughed once more. “Well said, Lady Toland.”
Aurane peered down at her with clear intrigue as she spoke, the smile ever-present on his lips as he observed her. “By all means, my lady. Do thank me.”
Nymella’s smirk only widened as he spoke. “That is good, because I doubt I would have survived any more of it.” She replied with a chuckle, but then she shook her head. ”Please, do call me Nymella. There is no need for such pleasantries here.”
“I believe I just did, unless there was another way of thanking that you would prefer.” Nym deadpanned, not really being the one to beat around the bush. “Subtleties are so utterly tedious, would you not agree?”
Daenerys loved King’s Landing. Her mother taught her to. Loving King’s Landing took labor of the heart. It had been the land of Kings - Targaryen Kings. Her ancestors inscribed their legacy onto their very walls of her home. Daenerys had always loved the history of her House and yearned for a past that would never return: when they could ride mightily on the back of fire-breathing creatures. And yet men who lied and killed walked in and out of the halls of Red Keeps like flood. Snakes who killed and raped women. Cowards who whipped and slapped children. Daenerys did not miss the cruelty of the lords and ladies who inhabited the land and exploited her people in Flea Bottoms. Five years the Princess was free from such ugliness of King’s Landing. Five years away from this wretched place she both loved and loathed.
Daenerys had gotten used to the constant floods of people. Every two steps she took, someone would stop her to pay their respect and welcome her home. All of them wanted an audience or to have afternoon tea with her. Daenerys had lost count how many she had turned down. Lady Nymella of Ghost Hill however, did not seem impressed by her presence. “Am I boring you with my family’s history, Lady Nymella?”
The blonde Targaryen princess in front of her seemed so out of place. Yes, she certainly looked and behaved the part, but there was something about her that just reeked of exasperation; whether it be of people or circumstances, Nymella did not know. But, what she did know, was that the Targaryen history was a long and eventful one. “Overwhelming would be a much more correct description, lady Daenerys. I apologise if I appear bored, that is not my intention.” She apologised to the princess with a reassuring smile. “But, I do agree that it is a shame there are no more dragons. I admire the creature deeply.”
“I am happy to hear it, lady. If I remember correctly, there is much difference between Dorne and King’s Landing. Though I have only visited once or twice,” Renly said, smiling. Though Nymella Toland seemed the type who would quickly get bored with conversation, she seemed to still be willing to talk to him. He saw no reason to ramble on and on about his own upbringing in Storm’s End.
Renly thought back, for a moment forgetting how long he had been at court. “Oh, a few years. Seems to be forever ago that I arrived. But that may be because I never quite felt at home in Storm’s End,” Renly said, shrugging. “And now my nephew will join me.”
“You should visit it again, it is lovely there.” she smiled, nodding at his word. “Much different, yes. For one, women hold all the power there, and if I may say so myself, we are much happier that way.” She chuckled, a slightly mischievous tone underneath the giggle. Yes, women held all the power openly, but she reckoned they held it here as well, although a little differently, more subtly. She wasn’t a fan of such subtlety.
Nodding, she pursed her lips. “I can understand that. Often a person doesn’t feel at home when home. I did not feel at home when I was married, but then after a few years thing simply clicked to place and Ghost Hill really started to feel like it.” Nymella confided in the Baratheon. At the mention of his nephew, she wondered which one it was and whether or not a certain other Baratheon was joining him. But, those questions she did not voice. “He is happy to have someone to govern him here, then.”
For as long as could remember, Leonette had found an ease around other people. There was something soft and charismatic about her, an ease that allowed her to talk freely with others and not fumble over her words. Sure, she had a way of losing focus, of not truly involving herself in the conversation before she began to grow bored, but she was never unkind about her intrigue. So when welcoming others into the circle of communication, it did not seem a daunting prospect…the more the merrier!
“Marvelous, Lady Nymella!” she gushed, looking out at the clear skies and bright sun. It was beautiful, but she had seen fairer things before. “I would happily accompany you on your exploration.” Her desire for the food had lessened, since she’d been picking at for a while. So instead, she settled a little more comfortably into her chair, cup of tea warm in her hands.
Nymella smiled as she slipped into the seat next to the Tyrell woman, crossing her hands on her lap as she turned her head, and her posture, towards her new companion. She was a sweet soul, at least she appeared as such, but even if she was not, the Toland liked knowing as many people as she could, and lady Tyrell seemed like a good start. “How are you enjoying the capital, lady Leonette?” She asked.
“I am glad to hear that! Exploring places is always better in pair than alone, if I may say so.” Nym smiled at the girl, as she toyed with her fingers. She wasn’t of the fidgety kind, but she rarely knew what to do with herself in such situations, so she often laced and unlaced her fingers.
He could not recall who it was that had told him the name of the fiery-haired woman – perhaps it had been one of the girls he’d danced with at the festivities for Lord Stark – but nonetheless, Aurane had learned something of Lady Nymella Toland. He had heard she was a Dornish widow of some wealth, and he had heard she was rumored to keep lovers as if she were a King. Perhaps, if nothing more, she would be someone with whom to pass the time.
Aurane breezily approached Nymella as she engaged in conversation with a man he did not know, and brazenly caught her arm. He tossed a meaningless word of apology to the man he’d pulled her from, and hurried off with her, turning a corner as they went.
“Forgive my boldness, my lady,” Aurane spoke, dipping his head in a show of respect as he came to a stop. “Only…it seemed to me that it must have been impossible for you to have been truly enjoying that man’s tale – even despite your best efforts to look amused. I do not think the boredom you must have been feeling would have been betrayed to him, with how enraptured he seemed in himself. However, I consider myself to be a profoundly talented judge of character.”
Some men were boring, like the lord she spoke to, and some men were bold, like the silver hair man who charged in to her rescue - more or less. The nerve, the audacity, of the man almost made her smirk in appreciation, if it were not for the audience in form of a chatty lord. She watched the brief interaction between them with an amused glint to her eye, her eyebrow arched as her eyes danced from one man to the other, more Targaryen-looking one. She remembered, as she was led into a direction opposite of the dull lord, that someone told her about the bastard son of the house Velaryon, the same in which princess Daenerys was wed.
That was enough to spark her interest and the, almost regal, air in which he held himself held her intrigue. And if there was anything she loved, it was a good intrigue. She could still remember the disappointment in her when she realised that Ghost Hill was not, as she had hoped, haunted and that it held alarmingly little adventure. Of course, after her husband had died, there was a lot more adventure and fun. Nymella all but smirked to the man as he spoke, her eyebrow arched in entertainment. “Well, now I am certainly not bored.” She added in an amused tone.
“A man should be bold, so it is forgiven.” Nym replied with a dismissive wave of her hand, as she tilted her head to inspect the man. “Then I would hate to disagree with your talent, especially since it is correct.” Her smile was a radiant one, even a little teasing. As much as she hated men dragging her around like a marionette, she had to admit that the silver haired man’s initiative was a rather welcoming step out of the ordinary for her. Especially since she no longer had to endure a tale about lord’s whatever-was-his-name six horses and ‘’that one fox situation he had in his vineyard seven moons ago’’. “Now, I think I should thank you for saving me so gallantly from boredom.”
“Oh, please. You don’t want to hear about any of that,” Renly said, shaking his head. His smile was wide and easy, unshadowed. He had been telling a story of Storm’s End, one that while he believed it to be funny, was perhaps not all that kind of him. The truth was, he simply wanted to entertain the Lady of Ghost Hill. She was a fascinating woman, truth be told. Perhaps it was his exposure to Margaery and Olenna, forces to be reckoned with both, that had made him so admire women who took their ambitions into their own hands.
“Tell me more about yourself, Lady Toland. How are you enjoying court?” he asked, sweeping an arm to gesture towards the room they were in. He was unsure how long Lady Toland had been at court, if she had arrived merely for the funeral. Rumor was that she was staying, however. Rumor was she was seeking husbands for her daughters, who were lovely. Renly himself was considering who might be a good match for his nephew, were his nephew to grow up a little.
“But, I find it rather entertaining.” She protested, if only for further conversation’s sake. The lord was of the more approachable sort, without his ego standing in the way and taking up more space than a wild boar let loose in a small, claustrophobic Sept. She enjoyed the conversation, regardless of the topic, and she was pleased when he changed the subject, indicating he would like to continue chatting with her.
Nymella smiled, briefly rounding the room in a single gaze. “It is a welcome change from Dorne, but so very different. I am enjoying myself for now, it has been greatly entertaining these past few days. It is interesting to see a man in place of power.” She added the latter with an amused wink. “How long have you been at court, lord Baratheon?”
King’s Landing sounded a lot more pleasant back in Dorne. She was thrilled by the palace, of course. The extravagance of the Targaryens was equal to one of Lannisters, and one can only imagine what to expect when they united - and she was far from disappointed. Her taste had been more of the warmer kind, much like the climate of her motherland, and it was the reason why she turned the somewhat gloomy Ghost Hill into such a lush and prosperous place. Of course, that could not have been accomplished without dicing into her late husband’s funds, and now her resources were coming to a rather disturbing end, alarmingly fast.
Hence, why she was here in the first place - looking to marry at least one of her daughters off to someone wealthy, and to further establish the prestige of her castle. If she finds someone tolerable enough, then by Gods, she might marry as well. As long as the man did not hold any silly thoughts of controlling her.
Nymella listened to her current acquaintance speaking, a seemingly funny tale, and she chuckled where is was necessary. Just because she thought it was not that funny, did not mean she could not pretend it was. Her companion’s wide smile only made it all that much easier to pretend to be truly amused. “How entertaining!” She exclaimed with a chuckle. “Please, do tell me more.”
A soft hum on peach toned lips, which melted into the buzz of noise which came from crowded places. Fingers were coated in sweetness, from where tart berries poured out of the sides of a delicate pastry. Such indulgences were favoured by her, and she could not deny herself them - they had become something of an addiction. The spread before her was well made, strong cheeses and lemon cakes, salted meat and the finest arbor gold. It was a meal set out for more than one, but her original companion could not attend. Such was the fast paced life of the capital, although there was a longing in her heart for the beauty of Highgarden.
Recognising a familiar face, Leonette smiled. Extending her arm out, in invitation, she swept it over the food as she made her offer, “Would you care to join me? There is more food than I can bear to eat.”
The place was so different from Dorne, and her Ghost Hill. People were a lot more sinister, children were seemingly more well mannered, but that was debatable, and even the food was dangerous. Yes, poisons were not uncommon in Dorne, either, but at least there one knew who was a friend and who was a foe, who was an ally and who an enemy. Here, people wore many masks, and each was more deceiving than the other. This was not a place for her daughters, but Nymella did not really have that much of a choice - they had to marry, sooner than later, and she would have spared them the bother if she had found anyone she would deem tolerable enough to marry herself. But, she really hated changes, and she hated men thinking they could control her, which is why she is so content with her life as a widow - no one controls her and she has the power to run her home as she deems fits, and it is exactly what he deserves. To be in charge.
Her silent rant was interrupted by a woman’s voice, and Nym turned around, greeting the other with a friendly smile. It was the Tyrell girl, the married one she remembered seeing at the feast. “If it is your wish, lady Tyrell, then I cannot leave you hanging.” She chuckled softly, as she joined her by the table. “Splendid day, is it not? I was planning on exploring it a little. Would you care to join me?”
She watched with an envious look, from a small distance so as to stay out of sight, not that that was a possibility. Brienne was hardly inconspicuous in any setting, towering above every woman she had ever met, and nearly every man. But she hoped to at least avoid any more direct commentary on her person. The indirect tittering gossip and mocking commentary she’d evoked had been enough.
The practice yard that she had her eye on was filled with a small assortment of men and boys, both trained and training, and she itched to join their number. She had not let much stop her prior to her arrival in King’s Landing, but coming to court was something different, and even Brienne knew that there had to be limits, if only for her father’s sake. The capital was not Tarth nor Storm’s End. It would be even less accepted for her to maintain her usual habits instead of embracing the tasks that all daughters were required at court. Had it not been for Renly’s kindness and the acceptance of her excuses to follow, Brienne would have to have returned to Tarth. Though so far, her attempts to balance duties and wants was a poor blend and she clung to feeble hopes for something that might change the paths laid out for her by virtue of her sex.
She had nearly made up her mind to join those that she watched anyway when she felt the presence of someone else join her. Blushing, Brienne turned to face whoever it was that had caught her and interrupted her thoughts.
Nymella was rather pleased by her decision to remain at court, even if she missed her daughters. But, the setting and the people had to be assessed by her, first, before she would choose to throw her darlings to these savages. She had no doubt that the civilised court snakes were as venomous, and deadly, as she Sand Snakes of Dorne, but in Dorne people knew her and she knew them, and she did not have to watch herself too much. Here, the rules were different, and her daughters were still too innocent to be left alone here. That was the reason why the fiery haired woman walked around the palace, her eyes scanning the place and her lips holding a soft smile, as she looked at the unrefined beauty of the court, and the way people addressed and behaved around one another.
She found herself outside, near the training field, spotting a rather tall, blonde woman. She remembered seeing her keeping mostly to herself, and she heard how people mocked her for her size and it made Nym all the more determined to befriend the woman. One’s size was certainly not a reason to mock them, and as she approached the lady, she wore a friendly smile on her face. She stood closely behind her, her eyes raking over the training men for a moment, before she was noticed by the blonde. “Quite the sight to behold, are they not?” Nymella chirped with an almost conspiratorial tone to her voice, as she motioned towards the men with her head.
If her sudden turn of mood had been noticeable than Lady Toland had been kind enough to act as though it wasn’t and for that Alynna could only be grateful. If her uncle was to be believed than shows of weakness of any kind were not recommended in this place. There were many women here more skilled at this game than she was, more familiar with the inner workings of court and she feared them and admired them all in the same breath. She admired kindness a lot more than ambition though and she was glad to see this woman possessed a modicum of the former.
Alynna found herself speechless once Nymella was done speaking, she could only agree with the women’s thoughts even though she could hardly imagine anyone else sharing the same views. The dragons were remembered as the tools that brought greatness to the Targaryen house, at best they were deemed to be companions but not equals. For all the reverence people paid them not many thought dragons were smart. Imposing and menacing, yes. Those were the words that had come to define these creatures but as they were made to be subservient to men few were the ones who considered their intellect, their emotions. She couldn’t blame anyone for thinking that way, she hadn’t considered it much herself until now. “I think you are very wise, my lady and there must be some truth in what you say. I must say speaking with you has been rather enlightening.”
She could clearly see that her words surprised the girl. Not many shared her opinions and her views, but Nymella was never the one to care about the opinions of others, especially since she had a house to governs and daughters to raise - if she cared about other people’s thoughts and opinions, she would have gone down with her husband; many thought she poisoned him, but even if she did not love him, she did not wish death upon him, so it was, indeed, all nature’s doing. This girl had her younger daughter’s innocence, and Nym knew she could probably influence her a lot more if she liked so, especially seeing show she responded her her words. It was an intriguing thought, but for now she decided to put her scheming aside and converse with the girl normally.
At her compliment, Nymella laughed softly. “I am glad I could be of some service to you, but please, do me the courtesy and simply call me Nymella.” She gently requested, a kind smile settling firmly onto her lips.
The sort of smile lady Toland gifted her with was one that reminded her of her mother. Whenever Alynna needed reassurance she could turn to Jeyne and her lady mother was the only one that could calm her down. The two of them had the sort of close bond that only mothers and daughters could have and words were hardly needed between them. Alynna used to think she knew her mother’s mind well and the secrets that had been hidden from her, the pain in which her mother had wallowed alone for years without even confiding in her about it were an unbearable blemish on that bond of theirs. Lady Toland had been well meaning in smiling in that manner Alynna could tell but it brought thoughts of her lady mother forth and she felt herself sadden considerably. She could not let it show, she thought and smiled back in kind although sadness reached her eyes.
Thankfully the conversation provided her with the perfect distraction and she turned slightly towards the skulls, trying to find in her that feeling of awe she had felt a mere moment ago. “If I can be frank with you, my lady then I’ll tell you that I do not think such creatures were ever meant to be owned or domesticated. I doubt they were born loyal to anyone but their own kind until men decided to appropriate them. They were given no choice but to curb their wilder instincts to survive, I’d say that loyalty you speak of was borne entirely out of necessity.” She voiced her opinion on the matter as logically as she could but on the matter of freedom she felt quite passionately and her voice was more assured than it had been before, more assertive. “I am lady Alynna Baratheon. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance” She replied remembering her banners and bowed slightly before the older woman. Her name was not one that she knew but the lilt of Nymella’s accent was one she recognized as Dornish.
There was a sudden change in lady Baratheon, a sort of sadness which crept into her eyes, but lady Toland knew better than to comment on it. The young woman did her best to keep her sudden mood swing hidden, so the fiery haired woman played along, her kind smile still firm on her face. With every passing moment, the dark haired lady reminded her more and more of her own daughter, her little dove that she left in Dorne - these sad affairs were not a good place for her daughters, especially since it would be their first time at court. Nymella had to make sure she knew who the snakes and enemies were, before she would nudge her daughters to appear.
“The pleasure is all mine.” She smiled a little wider as lady Baratheon stood in front of the skulls, and she turned to observe them once more. A knowing smile blossomed on her lips as Alynna spoke, nodding along to her words. “Then the real dangers come from those who controlled them. Dragons, like any other animal I am sure, are honest creatures. We all know what they want - to feed, to keep warm and to procreate, it is the people with hidden agendas. I think, if I may be so bold, that the dragons were smarter than we give them credit for. A tamed animal did not lose the wilderness in her, it just chose to tone it down. After all, they were fed and protected without even having to fight for it themselves. I think they were always in control. Only intelligent animals allow themselves to be tamed, and remain so wild.”
“Lady Nymella Toland, a pleasure to meet you. Tales of your successes with your house have reached us even here in King’s Landing,” he said smiling. Of course he knew little about her, beyond what people said. He was sure more than half of it was untrue, but even the least fantastical rumors of her had Renly impressed. “But please, Lord Baratheon is my older brother. Call me Renly. Or, if you must, Lord Renly.”
Briefly, he looked back over at the clumsy couple, only to restrain a second chuckle himself. They were truly amusing, one of both of them had to be drunk. “As do I. Though I must say I prefer the old lords to the old ladies. The ladies give you words of wisdom you do not want. But it is a party, so we can ignore them,” he said, laughing lightly.
At his words of admiration, Nymella smiled, feeling even more proud for successfully managing her house; she never doubted her skill, only her funds, as it turned out - her late husband did like to gamble a lot, and she did enjoy luxurious trinkets, after all. “I am glad to hear my reputation precedes me.” She chuckled, but at his following words she nodded. “Of course, but only if you shall call me Nymella in return.” She proposed. New friendships always brought smile on her face, especially is it was a somewhat prosperous friendship.
Taking a sip of her wine, Nym placed the goblet back onto the table as Renly spoke, and snorted out in amusement at his comment. “That depends on the lord. I was married to an old lord, Gods rest his soul, and he often nagged even worse than an old lady. But, I do agree -- ladies tend to speak as if they drank from the well of wisdom.” She said with a chuckle.
Following the lady’s eyes, he chuckled softly. The couple she was referring to really was amusing, apologizing every few seconds for stepping on someone else’s toes. They seemed to be greatly irritating the people around them. They seemed to be enjoying themselves, all the same. He turned his attention back to the lady sitting by herself. If judging others was her amusement, Renly could understand that. It was a great past time in the capital.
He sat down, took a sip of his wine. He had to admit he’d had a bit more than he normally did already that night. His attention kept getting dragged away, back to Loras or his niece. He had done plenty of business during the funeral itself, he deserved a break, even if that meant sitting and making fun of people.
“I’m Lord Renly Baratheon, and pleased to make your acquaintance, my lady,” he said, bowing just slightly from his seat. “I must say, this is a far more entertaining rest than listening to some of these old goats rhapsodize about their glory days.” Renly leaned back a bit in his chair, stretching his shoulders.
Nymella had found herself greatly amused by the lord. After he had introduced, she found that she had privately guessed correctly, in a way; that dark hair was a sort of a trademark to both the Baratheons and the Starks and she was pleased her knowledge of foreign houses still served her well. “Pleasure is all mine, lord Baratheon. I am lady Nymella Toland.” She returned his introduction with her own, as it was only a proper thing to say.
His words made her chuckle softly, and she nodded her head in utter agreement. “Indeed, it is!” She all but exclaimed, her chuckle prolonged by yet another ‘dancing escapade’ of The Clumsies. “Such conversations are hilarious, but I fear it is in the people’s nature; to brag about things long past and thus re-live them and, as the surely hope, prolong their lives and vitality. I find it most tedious.” Nym commented with a small grin. “Besides, we are still both far too young to vex ourselves with such tales, are we not?” She added, amused.
