one of the worst things about the ghosts finale to me is how they just.... let button house be gentrified. a house with hundreds of years of history, displayed to us throughout the entire show.... only to be turned into a hotel, where they're gonna flush all that down the drain.
what's gonna happen to the books in the library? pat's stump? fanny's pet cemetery?
okay, fine, have alison and mike move out. that was probably gonna happen since the very start, it's a very typical sitcom ending. but to me, the obvious answer was always a museum. they could've introduced some kooky but well-meaning wealthy preservationist in season 5 that says offhandedly that the house would make a wonderful museum. And then that's when Alison realizes. That's what they could've done this entire time.
Because holy shit, there's just so much history in that house, showed to us time and time again. It's not just any average wealthy manor- people have lived and loved and died in there. It's such a perfect encapsulation of the gradual changing of Britain as a place and nation. From the Black Death to the Georgian extravagance to the Edwardian Glamour to the WW2 Haste and then to the 90's Charm. It's Button House. A little manor on the corner of England that has lived to see it change and grow over thousands of years. But now it's a hotel.
So the actual ending that was displayed to us just feels.... bleak. Like, this place can have thousands of years of history but still get swept up by the next highest bidder. It's a hotel, and now it's probably gonna remain a hotel for the rest of its existence.
Does that make sense?
Has anyone ever made a spreadsheet/table comparing different elements of the different versions of Ghosts? Or is that something I'm going to have to find the time to fixate on creating at some point?
(a sort of) Ghosts Google Drive Masterpost
...as well as just where to watch them in general.
sooo... I don't know if this has been done yet but I've decided to make a sort of compliation of google drives for all the different remakes of BBC Ghosts. Just in case it might be helpful, because through my other posts, I've learned that quite a few people don't know there are other versions of Ghosts. Disclaimer: I don't own any of these google drives, and I've mostly encountered them through Tumblr and Reddit posts so thank you so much to the people who made them!!
BBC Ghosts (UK Original)
Found on this Tumblr post. We thank you, o kind one. If you live in Britain, pretty sure it's up on BBC iPlayer.
CBS Ghosts (US)
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1kPxkuYkrqRv3IC4ZebPUn6Wu9kmlvgjN
(Dunno why Tumblr refuses to make this a big link.) Found on this Reddit post. fyi, this Google drive doesn't include the fifth season, at least as of now. I've found the fifth season on a pirating site called "lookmovie2". If you live in America, you can watch the recent episodes for free on the CBS website. The whole series is up on Paramount+, and apparently the earlier seasons are on Netflix in some countries.
ARD Ghosts (Germany)
(English subtitles are included.) Found this link on a Tumblr post—sorry to report that I don't know who made it, and have forgotten which post I've sourced this from. I do know who did the translations—that would be @rovermcfly. The English-speaking community thanks you. If you can speak German, the episodes are available for free on the ARD website.
Ghosts France
(English subtitles are included.) I sourced this from the same Tumblr post as the German remake. Unfortunately, I don't know who made this drive or who translated. I'm pretty sure you can watch this on Disney+ also... but only for some regions.
Ghosts Greece
(English subtitles are included.) Translations and Google drive by @ratnix. Once again, the English speakers thank you. If you know Greek (and live in Greece), the episodes are available on the Star TV website. Pretty sure they're free but can't tell 'cause I don't speak Greek.
Ghosts Australia
I found this one on this Tumblr post. I don't know any other legal websites you can watch this on.
uhhh hope this was helpful :)
An underlying theme/question in every iteration of Ghosts is: how does a man respond when there is something that plays an enormous role in his wife/girlfriend's life but that he is incapable of experiencing or even really understanding? How does a man deal with knowing that there are people who are important to his wife/girlfriend but whom he can never interact with directly? It's one of the reasons why it feels like the right choice to me that it's always the woman in the central couple who can see the ghosts. I'd say that, traditionally, there's less of a societal expectation on men to be interested in the things that matter to their female partners than vice versa.
In the different versions of Ghosts, the central man responds to the situation differently at different times. It's a situation that can prompt frustration, curiosity, jealousy, embarrassment, affection, and amusement. But it's a fundamental part of the basic premise that the non-ghosts-seeing partner consistently believes and supports his partner who sees ghosts, even if they might have some relationship ups and downs.
I think this is one of the things that's lovely about Ghosts, that it is built around a genuinely loving long-term romantic relationship but that relationship allows plenty of room for other significant interpersonal connections and interactions to be just as important in the narrative. It's a show which has a romantic long-term relationship as a key ingredient but which is really about found family.
And having just watched the Australian version of Ghosts, I think this is why I love Sean's proposal so much. Because he planned a proposal flashmob that he would be entirely unable to see or hear but that he knew would mean a lot to Kate. After stressing about doing a suitably big romantic gesture, he settled on something that wasn't really about him but was just about Kate's experience. When the ghosts are singing and dancing, the camera shows us Sean looking over to watch. But of course he's not watching the ghosts - he can't see anything they are doing. He's watching Kate's reaction, while she's looking away from him at what appears to him to be thin air. And this is how he looks at her looking at them:
I think that's a such important part of love, to be able to gain joy from someone's happiness, even when the thing that they are happy about isn't something you can share in.
once again thinking of the quiet grace of ghosts allowing a bunch of lonely souls who were never treated right to keep on trying, to get a second chance at being treated with kindness and respect, of patching together the holes in their lives and finding the tender recognition they never got while alive. none of the ghosts were ever cool in their lives: robin gets ignored by his caveman buddies, thomas is taken advantage of, pat gets cheated on, mary gets burned, fanny has a loveless existence and kitty is tricked by the people she trusted. humphrey tries his best to reach out and remains as lonely as ever, julian revels in cutting off everyone he loves and never gets to fix it, the captain shuts his soul down to keep doing his duty. there are people in their lives who love them but we get the sense the ghosts still aren't ever truly seen while they're alive. so to get a second chance at loving, to be a lonely person and allowed to have another go at being held—what grace. what infinite grace to live on like that, even if it's a half-life, because it's a life they were denied when living properly.
I actually adore that Mary's backstory episode (Season 4 Episode 2) wasn't focused on her death. I love that she was able to tell the story of her death to the other ghosts, but it wasn't really shown to us.
It's easy, both for us the audience and for the characters to fixate on how the ghosts died, particularly with Mary. Throughout the show, we've seen the other ghosts' eagerness to hear about the witch trial and Mary's unwillingness to talk about it. But in terms of themes about moving on from trauma, it's actually far more powerful that when we did get proper Mary-focused flashbacks, they were mostly about her experiences after her death.
Instead of focusing on how she was demonised and killed, the show showed us how she made a friend and came out of her shell. How she died is only really covered in a short cold open scene, and the witch burning itself isn't shown. And I think that's important, because Mary should not be reduced to how she died. Even after that terrible trauma, she made interpersonal connections, learned things, and grew as a person. She was more than just a person who was accused of being a witch - people are more than the awful things that have happened to them, and the show made an effort to show that.
Headcanon that Alison has a secret list of Cap’s possible names.
Furthermore, she just randomly says a name to him and he’s like “no” then she goes and scribbles out the name on her little list.

There was lots to be emotional about in the Ghosts christmas special but weirdly I find myself having a lot of feelings about Julian's daughter being a Green Party MP. Here's some headcanons:
I imagine she felt very distant from her father given how young she was when he died and how little he was around even before then.
When she was old enough for her peers to be aware of her father's scandal, she was probably bullied for it, which would have made her feelings about her father even more complicated.
She got into politics when she started researching her father's policies and realised how strongly she disagreed with all of them.
When she first started joining political groups and protests as a teenager, she was terrified about what would happen if people discovered who her father had been. For a while she gave a fake surname to people at political events. She had a plan to officially her surname by Deed Poll as soon as she turned 16, but in the end she changed her mind. She decided that hiding who her father just gave him more influence over how she viewed herself.
Once she managed to use her parentage to blag an invite to a Conservative party event, but she heckled every speech and caused such chaos that they never invited her again.
She has given a lot of very sassy responses to people who make snide remarks about her father.
In the early days of her career, a journalist asked her on live TV about the impact of her father's sex scandal on her own personal relationships. Rachel responded "Unlike my father, I happen to think that the future of the planet is more important than who I happen to be screwing. Let's get back to politics, shall we?"
Once, a Tory MP asked what her father would think of a social welfare policy she was campaigning for and she told him "I don't much care. I am evidence that hating poor people isn't genetic, so there might be hope for your children after all."
Rachel becomes such a successful politician that people think the most significant thing about Julian Fawcett is that he was Rachel Fawcett's father.
The thing about Julian's daughter becoming a Green Party MP is either Margot raised Rachel with left-wing environmentally-conscious politics or Rachel formed her political opinions independently of her upbringing. I honestly can't decide which option I like more. On the one hand, I love the idea of Margot teaching ideas that Julian would hate to their daughter. On the other hand, I love the idea of Rachel striking out on her own as the only lefty in the family.
no one talk to me. it's been 2 hours and im still crying over alison and the ghosts

Headcanon that Alison has a secret list of Cap’s possible names.
I like to imagine that she tries saying these names in his vicinity because he might instinctively turn around/answer to the correct name
Last night I had a dream that there was a new episode of Ghosts and we found out The Captain's surname and it turned out to be a quintuple-barrelled monstrosity (i.e. four hyphens) which is why no one in the show ever calls him it. Tragically I cannot remember what the name actually was, only that it was very long and weird.
Some more info on the episode I dreamt: there was a flashback which showed someone inspecting a unit which The Captain was leading on the front line in France. The person doing the inspection interviewed a low-ranking soldier who was really traumatised by the fighting (it was this soldier who said the Captain's name in answer to a question from the person inspecting).
When the dream-episode moved back to the present again, the same soldier (as a ghost) was sitting on a bed with the Captain and there was a strong gay vibe between them... So basically I dreamt a boyfriend for the Captain.

Rewatching Ghosts Episode 5 (and seeing Lady Button criticising the burglars' tactics) lowkey makes me want to write an AU where Fanny is the leader of a criminal gang
I was inspired by @bbcghosts's wonderful "BadlyDrawnGhosts" pictures on Instagram so here are some genuinely badly drawn ghosts :)
BBC Ghosts + GBBO = A Lot of Headcanons
The Great British Bake Off tent is always set up in the grounds of a stately home… Why not the grounds of Button House? Here’s how I imagine that would go down:
Lady Button is forbidden from entering the tent because she might show up on the cameras. She pretends that she wasn’t interested anyway and complains about the damage to the lawn.
Mike initially suggests banning all the ghosts from the tent, but Alison persuades him that (a) they can’t actually stop the ghosts going into the tent, and (b) it would be nice to let the ghosts watch what’s going on
Most of the ghosts pick a favourite contestant and they have extremely heated arguments about who ought to win (more headcanons below the cut)
I love this! Definitely think Noel Fielding would be convinced the tent was haunted because he’s a spooky witch in his own right!
