Home Sweet Home (Jim and Charlie)
Her penchant for wandering would have to be laid to rest. The nails were, quite literally, but mostly figuratively, being hammered into its coffin as the thought crossed her mind, and the thought crossed her mind because she had just blown back into town after another little ‘trip’ to see her new home being built.
Funny how things like that worked.
Charlie stopped dead in her tracks long before she found herself at a noticeable distance. She could still leave. She could turn around and walk anywhere in the world. She could go as far as her legs would carry her, and there wasn’t a Goddamned thing anyone could do to stop her from it, but she didn’t want to. For once, laying eyes upon her new, stationary home didn’t feel like voluntarily sticking her leg into a bear trap. It was liberating to want to stay there.
She allowed herself a smile as she stepped forward, unable to silence the heavy footfalls of her mechanical limb enough for her return to be a surprise.
“Are you planning on building this whole thing all by yourself?”
Jim turns, his smile warm and wide, touching his eyes. There she is! “Well..... You could help if you want.” Jim motions to the home. “Just don’t work too hard!” He turns back to his wagon and looks through the pieces to see if there was anything of interest to show her. “I just have a lot of material just for the outside of the home. Though I did find a chair that I brought back!” He grunts as he heaves it out of the rest of the junk. “I just thought it looked neat.” He shrugs one shoulder. Usually you would finish the house before putting in frivolous things like chairs... but the curling wood was lovely.
