It was an early morning in the ministry, many were still asleep but not the couple of Terzo Emeritus and his favorite ghoul who also just so happened to be his fiancé.
The two of them were cleaning up in the chapel that had held a black mass the night before, it was an easy mess to clean; Basic dusting, picking up and scraping melted candles from the tiled floors, burning fresh incense that enveloped the un-holy building they found comfort in— they were all tasks that were pretty much routine to the Papa. As mundane as they might have been sometimes, things were always better when he had the help of his large ghoul, Omega.
They loved each other very much despite rules of the ministry stating that is was forbidden to date ghouls— let alone engage with one, swearing to stay by their side and protect them until death one day would painfully do them apart. This was especially prevalent if you were of emeritus blood- much too pure to be mixed with that of a hell spawn. but nonetheless, their love prevailed in his unholiness's dark church.
The two of them have a nice time cleaning, basking in the sunlight that draped in through stained glass and painted terzos face with color that made Omegas heart flutter. Eventually the building is reset and ready for future use, meaning the two can go off on their way.
Terzo suggests they meet in his brothers garden for a cute lunch, away from everyone in his secret spot, where they could get up to some mischief if they felt like it. (they always felt like it)
Omega agreed and silently told himself he was going to go to the earth-ghoul greenhouse and pick out some black roses that he had begged for the other ghouls to plant for him to one day give to his, love.
Omega decided to hit up a shower before meeting him out on the shaded lawn, and Terzo went off on his way to snag food from their kitchen. It was decided; a lunch date in the garden across from the chapel, at 12:30.
After his shower, Omega stepped into the cold bathroom air, feeling the way stray water droplets ran down his skin making him shiver. Nothing like the shivers that Terzo could get out of him, making Omega feel like he was a small weak ghoul under Terzos dominance.
The time is 12:20 as Omega quickly dresses and heads out to pick up the flowers for his lover.
When Omega snips the roses and ties them together with a small bow, he looks upon their dark color, resembling the perfect raven hair that he always seemed to admire when he was around the third Emeritus.
Its already 12:30 by the time he's hurrying back to the hidden lawn beside the chapel, but- but when he arrives, a confused look captures the ghouls face as there is no sight of his fiancé. okay— he's running late— maybe he's in the kitchen? omega checks the kitchens, their shared room, and even asks the other papas and ghouls if they know where he is at the moment. walking back towards a hall leading to the garden, there's a frantic Cardinal by the name of Copia who looks distressed as he stares out the window and at the church. Omega leans down, not wanting to scare the already seemingly timid man, and asks him if he knows where he is. there's no response from the Cardinal but as his gaze flicks back again and again at the building, there's no harm in checking... right? although- Copia was quite frantic and must've been caught in thought about whatever was going on in the chapel.
Omega sighs and clutches at the flowers with his strong hands, not wanting too seem eager to rush over to the church and make a fool of himself if nothing was there, but also— something just wasn't right. something within him screamed fight or flight but he didn't know why.
he steps up to the chapel and slowly opens the creaky large wooden doors, his eyes widen at the sight of his beloved, laid across the alter with a determined sister imperator next to him wielding the rope to what could only be a guillotine.
he could only watch for a moment as any of the right words or things to do got trapped in his throat. but after a second of blinking and trying to figure out if what he was seeing was some kind of sick prank- he could suddenly feel the tears running down his face as he heard the scared voice of Terzo calling his name... something that would normally draw a deep groan out of him but now it dawned on him that this was in fact happening in front of him.
Omegas legs moved faster than he could possibly imagine, a benefit of being a ghoul. he raced towards her, screaming for Sister to get away from him and he pushed her to the ground- his nails digging into her skin as she screamed out from not only the large claws tearing her flesh open but also the pang of her skull being forced into the cold tiled floor.
He didn't think before pushing her out the way, nor did he realize that she was the one keeping the blade from befalling upon his lovers neck. In a flash, he threw her limp body to the side and couldn't reach out but for a second before witnessing the fault of his actions. He had let a mix of not only adrenaline, but also his love for Terzo, get in the way of rational thinking.
the jet-black roses he once held for his lover, were now on the ground, wilted, trampled, and riddled with the blood of the man he swore to protect. a jarring difference between the black petals and red blood, all on white tile.
as he stared at the situation before him, feeling the unglamoured rage build up within him. it shouldnt have happened- why did she do this? why?... why?!
in a small, meek voice he heard a woman begging for help only to turn around and see that sister was unfortunately still holding onto what little life she had left.
engulfed in feral minded wrath, omega could only see the scared, pale, and bloody head flashing before his eyes so he did what he felt was necessary.
omega launched at her body that was small and quivering compared to his. He grabbed her by the shoulders and dug his nails in, to the point that his fingertips could feel the raw muscle tissue ripping underneath them. he shook her vigorously asking her- no- demanding for answers she couldn't possibly give. not like this... not now. not now that it was already done. He continued to attack the already deceased woman's body with enough vigor, you would think she was actively fighting back. Her body bled onto white tiles as her body was utterly and completely mangled. not to mention his fiancés head was bloodied on the floor, any expressions of fear, gone from the face.
what had he done? it was all his fault... he killed both of them- surely once the clergy found out it would be him next... he didn't want to die but- but he also didn't want Terzo to die! why was this happening to him...!
Omega continued to spiral, leaving the scene as hooded clergy men burst through the front of the chapel and omega bolted out the back, clutching his chest, panting and almost doubling over at his lack of willpower. Omega stood there unable to move just gagging as he thought about Terzos headless body and the way his face was numb and hollow. He wanted to lay down and die in this moment but knew he needed to get somewhere safer, somewhere that wasnt out in a field where anyone could see his bloodied white outfit and stained body.
As omega rushed back to his and Terzos shared chambers, he could feel his soul losing whatever grip it had began to form on this life, this purpose he was supposed to serve. It was Terzo that truly tamed him when the vicious ghoul was summoned. Terzo risked his life helping the scared ghoul but— where was he now? where was Terzo now that he was once again just a scared ghoul in need of saving?
On the first day, he stayed holed up in his room, crying his eyes out with what little strength he could manage. He couldn't even look at himself in the mirror knowing he killed Sister, and in turn, he killed the man who once looked up at him with such a pure and beautiful love but was now surely looking down upon the ghoul with confused hatred. Eventually, the fear and paranoia that the clergy was coming for him, set in and any sense of rational thought was escaping him.
The other ghouls were a bit confused why he had never left his room and were even more perplexed to hear that their papa was missing on some "clergy business". But Omega knew— and he knew that Cardinal knew as well... they were the only ones who were burdened with the truth and it made him want to strangle the feeble cardinal with his bare claws for not telling him that Terzo was going to be put down like some 17th century witch. He had done nothing wrong, hell— he was basically with Terzo 24/7 like a right hand man of a sort. The man was innocent (of crimes against the clergy that is) the only thing that the clergy might not have approved of was their love. Terzo wasn't supposed to fall for the ghoul but when it happened they both knew that they were the others second half.
Thoughts clouded Omegas mind as he stayed curled up in the blankets of their shared bed, inhaling the scent of his lover that used to comfort him so. It reminded him of early mornings and late nights, spent holding each other and not having a care in the world.
Things were different now... eventually the familiar smell of his lover would fade and he would hold onto anything to make it feel better. But for now he just wanted to sleep and pray to any spirit below to just kill him, take him to where he could be with his love again.
Ghouls and sisters of the clergy grew worried about Omegas sudden shut in away from everyone but that was all overshadowed when Nihil begrudgingly made an announcement to the ministry, informing them that their Papa was dead and not only that but Sister was found dead too. He explained that someone was to blame for her death but never mentioned who was at fault of killing Terzo... but Omega knew, And when he looked across the church and saw Cardinal standing there, they locked eyes, knowing the truth.
At the end of the announcement Nihil explained that they still needed a Papa to be the face of the ministry and the role would now be filled by the Cardinal with the second most employee of the month awards, Cardinal Copia.
After Nihil let everyone return to their lives there was a shroud of sadness and mourning over the ministry but Omega just felt anger. How could they just forget about him so quickly, dismiss him like nothing happened? like his head wasnt just cut off by their supposed loving Sister Imperator!
He made the walk back to his room to sit in the dark and succumb as the pit spoke to him in his head, making the ghoul fight against his demonic nature. He hadn't felt like this in a long time, he was becoming unstable, only meant to appear like this in the darkest reaches of hell where he once belonged.
Omega snarled and growled as he tried to push away his instincts, he dug his fingers into his skin, marring the beautiful silver flesh. Droplets of crimson began to form and he pulled his nails away quickly, trying to find something to hold onto, something to bring him back to reality...
But nothing did. As people came and went trying to ask him if he was okay and even the newly appointed Papa IV paid him a timid visit. Who knows what would have happened if Omega let him inside...
The third day is always the hardest, especially when you're a feral ghoul pacing back and forth, unaware of what time it could possibly be. He had shut the lights and the curtains out, not wanting the world go by without Terzo... without the thing that made his world go by.
Everyone in the ministry carried on like life could just keep going, forgetting about the deceased papa, and the ghoul who clawed at the walls, mind flashing with images of the moment his head split and the life left those gorgeous mismatched eyes, any of Terzos remaining tears soaking into dead flesh.
Omegas words just turned to upset growls and his eyes darkened in the state of his feral minds return. (idk wtf writers mean when say say "his eyes darkened" but I literally mean his eyes blackened)
His Quint magic was shot, causing his already heightened senses to rise agonizingly, and his mind to swarm with an overload of energy and nothing to do with it.
"Please, Hell below- hear me- I can't live like this... I can't live without him... give him back! Please dammit don't you hear me? give him back!"
Omega slammed his fists into the floor where he was on his knees. The force of his fists and the buildup of quintessence, came out like an electric water ripple, hitting everything in its path with a faint glow.
When his fists hit the floor and the pent up energy was released, it felt- it felt good. If he was gonna get these emotions out he was gonna do it himself.
The combination of his fists hitting the floor, and his heightened senses sent painful shock waves through his body that he knew could never compare to the pain of seeing your lover be the reason you lose your head.
Omega cried broken, gruff, roars as if to communicate directly with hell itself. His voice was so broken, too rough, like it wasnt him...
"Please... I'll give it up- I'll give up my magic, my element, I'll give up my mind and my soul, but I- I need to see him... bring him back..."
This time when he let out a burst of energy into the ground- it was different... Like something had listened for the first time in days...
The faint shimmer of his quint magic traveled along the walls before sinking into them like the building was absorbing it.
"Dont- dont go..." Omega was tired, he was defeated, his eyes blackened with ghoulish instincts taking over.
His eyes shut for a second, maybe it was longer as was prevalent by the raging headache in his brain.
After who knows how long, he woke up and there was a knock at his bedroom door... it was weak, feeble, but someone unsteady was certainly there.
Omega nearly roared, begging anyone to stay away but- that knock... that faint pattern...
"You aren't real... youre a trick I know it I fucking know it..."
Omegas mind spiraled as he clamored to the door, falling to his knees when he saw a weak, pale Terzo standing before him. Bloody bruising and scars marred his poor neck wrinkled with beautiful time passed.
"Youre dead- I killed you! You aren't real this- this is"—
Terzo stepped towards Omega, causing the normally strong willed ghoul, to flinch back, pupils slitting as he snarled.
Terzo didn't flinch. He didn't even flinch at the ghouls feral size, partially glamoured and half pure hell beast
Instead, he knelt down, bringing himself lower than Omega — a gesture of submission, of patience, of understanding.
Oh god- Omega thought. He sounded like Terzo and he looked like Terzo... but he saw the blade fall- he couldn't catch the rope in time it- it was his fault... This is impossible...
Omega made a low ticking sound and growled as Terzo surrendered weakly to him. Parts of his brain were trying to tell Omega to destroy anyone who tried to get near him but the part of his heart that belonged to Terzo, could never truly die. Not when the man was standing right here—
"Omega, I am right here... Mi amore, please..."
Omegas chest heaved, his blood thirsty mind begging to get rid of anyone who dared to mock his mate. But the other part of him was crying at the sight of seeing him alive and although not particularly well— he was alive.
He dug his claws against his temples fighting his urges and temptations that drove him in 50 different directions, ripping his train of any sort of thought, to shreds.
"Not real! God damn— it's not real! It's not real!"
He repeated this like a mantra that replayed in his head without stopping. Was it real? Was it a trick so he would surrender to the pit?
His claws continued to dig at his skin until suddenly he paused, feeling a warm hand on his wrist. It was Terzo... Right? A hallucination couldnt be so warm... so alive...
Yes, it was warmth. Not imagined. Not a hallucination sent from the pit to lure Omega back into the dark.
"I— I let you die..." The ghouls voice was a gravelly sob, broken with cracks and gasps. "I watched it— I killed you..."
At the words and tears, Terzo did not flinch at his feral mate, he just moved closer— urging the ghouls claws away from his marred silver skin and into the fragil man's own palms. He bared his ruined, scarred neck. He had died. It was certainly no doubt.
"If you killed me... why would I be here right now?"
Terzos voice whispered, still cracked and shifting with disuse from being dead for multiple days.
"I saw your eyes... I saw the pain and how you reached for that rope... In no universe was it ever your fault... There was nothing we could do..."
Omega stayed still in shock, a wave of understanding and humanity washing over him like the breeze on a salty ocean. He just flinched and shut his eyes as Terzo put his face against the ghouls claw, letting Omega cradle his head. It was too much— the thought of having Terzos head in his hand- no he couldn't handle it.
Omega roared and inched back away from Terzo with pain in his expression as he bared fangs. He wasn't angry. He could never be angry, except for at the universe who caused his pain.
Even as Omega fought him, Terzo clung to the ghoul. If he wanted to hurt him he would, but Terzo knew that Omega would never— could never- hurt him.
"Please- let me go... let me go, I can't hurt you again- not again, not again, please mi amore- it's killing me"—
Omega was a wounded animal, confused by fate and consequences. The only thing he was for sure that could heal him was the touch of his lover whose existence right now was a mind altering mystery.
No matter how much the ghoul begged and shook The Emeritus off of him— he held on strong. Or— what was as strong as he could muster up.
He suddenly spoke, causing Omega to hush, listening intently to every word in case it would be his last breath.
"Omega... you are not what killed me. You are what I came back for. And I need you to come back for me too... Okay, mio ghoul?"
Suddenly, it dawned on the ghoul, truly dawned on him. This man was too warm, too vocal, too perfect and yet broken to be a hallucination from the pit. And if it was a trick? He was the damned fool.
Omegas growls shifted to a low rumble before Terzo moved to hold the ghoul, placing one of the silver claws over his slow, shallow yet undeniably beating heart.
"Please hear me, mi amore. I'm yours, Omega."
There was a moment of silence and a long pause that hung heavy before strong, bloodied arms enveloped Terzo, holding their bodies together with enough force that ensured the clergy couldnt take him again. Never again.
"I'm sorry, Terzo..." Omegas voice was low. His boisterous demeanor, shallow and pale similar to the complexion of the recently resurrected Terzo.
"Shh, shh— you have absolutely nothing to be sorry for, Omega..." Terzos body gave into the ghouls, his energy depleted and run dry.
Finally— Omega sighed and shoved his head in the crook of Terzos neck, the smell of blood and pain enveloping the ghouls body with enough sympathy that the whole clergy could mourn for a month. But nonetheless, no matter the pain and no matter the unanswered questions- he was relived and in love. That was all Omega or Terzo could ask for.
And for a handful of moments- that was all that held them. Just pure relief that they weren't separated by death any longer.
The longer they sat together, the deeper the realization that Terzo was alive, came back to Omega, causing the black fog of Primal energy to fade as well as...
"Terzo. Terzo I— I don't have magic. I— I- did I actually somehow trade it for you?"
Terzos eyes shot open, his breath stuttering. "My ghoul... amore did you really offer that up in place of me? That's your entire being... It's your well— everything!"-
with a heavy sigh and a hand held to Terzos body, pressing him closer— he whispered, "No Terzo. You- are my everything. That was only elemental magic. I would have given my life if it meant I could find you again, I'd give it up 100 times over."
Terzo brought his face closer to Omegas, his warm lips on the ghouls. Lips that shouldnt have been able to be warm, they shouldnt be alive. But Omega didnt care for questioning Hells magic. Not when his fiancé finally had a head on his shoulders.
They kissed like they had never done before, any ideas of lust or desire gone and replaced with just the ever taking need to make sure the other was just as alive as the next person.
When they broke the kiss, Omegas body nearly collapsed against Terzos but he held himself strong for his fragile lover. "I almost lost you forever... I can't I"—
Terzo caught his lips in a searing kiss.
"Focus on now. Focus on me."
And that's just what Omega made sure to do for the rest of not only that night, but forever.
