Though I’d promised myself that Hinge—and dating apps in general—weren’t for me, here I am again. I don’t go out much, and my social circle isn’t exactly bursting at the seams, so the apps have become my only real way of meeting people. It’s a recipe for disappointment, but what else can I do?
An afternoon brunch date, I’m sat at a Hawaiian restaurant, waiting for my latest letdown to arrive. The place isn’t bad, actually. The walls are covered with Polaroids of past diners— many titled, celebrating anniversaries, first dates, casual hangouts. As I sit here waiting, I catch myself wondering: could that ever be me? Could it be us, another couple plastered up on the wall? A year from now, we can come back and laugh and reminisce about our first date have our wedding invitation hung up like another couple head on the. How romantic to imagine, the fantasy barely has time to take root before he rushes in, at this point ten minutes late, we greet and hug, he opens his mouth and the fantasy halts in a an extremely corny record scratch fashion.
His teeth, his fucking teeth. There’s British bad, but this was a whole other level of fucked. Why did he have to have bad teeth. He was so cute, tall, muscular, casual athletic fit that added some charm, and then his teeth. Not only was it a massive under bite, but all his teeth seem to have a gap in it.
We continue our date we grab pastries. After the restaurant sit on a bench we talk some more life. He explains his family situation. He explained his family situation: his dad had moved back to Taiwan with his stepmom and younger siblings after he graduated high school. He’d only met those siblings a handful of times and wasn’t sure how his dad was doing now. Instead, his aunt and uncle stepped in as parental figures, with his cousins acting as his pseudo-siblings. His mother dying from sickness as a child, he doesn’t remember much of her. despite this, he doesn’t seem like a bad guy, angry resentful he seems pretty mellow, chill this part kind of confuse me. He seemed so content with himself, not needing a lot of outward validation connection to really feel one with himself I mean, no mom no connection with dad no siblings share a large family but even for Thanksgiving he’s just gonna rent visit some random cousin of his in Boston. I honestly found it admirable. How could he seem so at peace with himself with so little connection? It made me think about how much I crave validation—not from family, maybe, but from someone. Anyone. Was he truly happy, or just used to being alone? He seems pretty content with life, comparing his outlooks and life style to that of a golden retriever.
So, I try desperately to look past the teeth. There’s some real substance to the guy, despite the hints of awkwardness and lack of attraction. Though, I think it was really telling as we were sitting on the bench eating the pastries we had a hawk swoop in inches from us and kill a pigeon right then in there sinking it’s talent into the pigeon killing it almost instantaneously ever want walking by gas and we both froze as the hawk flew away after killing its game right beneath the benches we were sitting on.
So much for the Polaroid fantasy
