Death was never pleasant. It became even more terrifying when poison was involved. While in King's Landing, she had not anticipated such a turn of events. She had thought she was living in a calm time when everyone was content with their lives. It came as a surprise to learn that this was not the case. It was made even more unsettling when Prince Richard Stark was named as one of the suspects. She could only imagine how Jeyne felt.
It was nonetheless somewhat uplifting to run into Tytos while strolling around the Keep's halls. "Roaming through these halls is the only source of entertainment we have right now," she said, a sigh escaping her lips. "I haven't found them yet," she continued, her gaze wandering around. "Though maybe in a cold, dark place if not on display in some of the rooms."
"And yet, the Red Keep is rather cramped feeling is it not? I imagine the rest of the city made it hard for Aegon, Aenys, and Maegor to expand it too far beyond Aegon's High Hill." Eyes roaming around the hallway they now stood in. "It's certainly not as open as Highgarden, and of course no castle could compare to the vastness of Casterly Rock. Though it is hard to make, what the Gods created naturally." Walking a few steps, he waited for Lady Hightower to follow him.
"Well if I remember right, my maester said they used to be kept in the room with the Iron Throne during the reign of the Targaryens. My mother said that her cousin by law, King Robert Baratheon had them moved to the lower levels. Then his kids, and her cousin Cersei kept them there." Rubbing his chin a little, "I would imagine that Queen Daenarys would have had them moved back into the Great Hall with the Iron Throne."
he hadn't asked, nor did he particularly care how tytos' evening was going - but steffon made the decision NOT to point that out. the last thing he wanted to do was give his brother a reason to act out, not that he ever seemed to need one. "you know damn well, i haven't offended anyone," his voice lowered, "unlike our father, i'm familiar with most of your tricks," he continued, this time his words were meant to serve as a warning.
"I thought it was wrong of me to presume, and I wouldn't want to assume that you didn't offend anyone." Raising his eyebrow, he laughed a little. "My tricks? What trick am I trying to pull on you? Besides if I could pull tricks on father, I would be the King of Westeros by now." Bringing his drink to his lips, he rolled his eyes at his brother. "You're grumpy tonight, grumpier than usual, what is vexing you brother, tell me? If I can help, I would like to." Tytos was being sincere, he wanted to help his brother, help his family how he could.
lorence’s lips curled into a soft smile, feeling a warmth spread through him at their playful banter. despite the longevity of their relationship, lorence still found himself pleasantly surprised by tytos. the audacious lion, who managed to turn every corner of the world into his own personal stage, who dared to dance so close to the edge of the precipice that held their clandestine affection. tytos was a melody in a world often too filled with silence, an enigma that lorence couldn’t help but find utterly enchanting. it was a trait he found equal parts endearing and maddening.
"bold words from a man who's had one too many glasses of arbor gold." he retorted, his voice barely a whisper, a flirtatious spark dancing in his eyes. the corners of his mouth twitched in amusement, resisting his own urge to kiss him right then and there, in front of the entire court. even though he wanted to, he knew he could never allow such an impulse to become reality.
at tytos’ reply to his question, lorence paused, his gaze softening. the thought of tytos as a commoner did little to change his affection for the man. in fact, it only made him love him more. he turned to one of the servants who was passing by, putting his half filled goblet onto the tray, signalling he was done drinking for the night. he waited for the servant to be long gone before turning and keeping his next words as a low whisper. "as a fisherman or a field hand, you'd still have the heart of tytos lannister, the heart i fell in love with. and that, my love, is all that matters to me.”
“if you were to tread the path of a courtesan, our worlds would be as distant as the sun and the moon.” he paused for effect, a playful glint in his eye. “not because i would think less of you, but for the simple fact that i couldn't afford your rates." he teased.
Tytos furrowed his brow as Lorence told him that he would still love him regardless if he was a fisherman or a field hand, because he would still have the same heart as he did now. It was a nice thought, but he was quickly confused when Lorence said that the sun and moon were distant from one another. It was clear to the plain eye that they were very close to one another, and in fact you could sometimes see them in the sky together.
"The sun and moon are neighbors though, they exist right next to one another. Are you sure they are distant like you say or is that just some sort of fancy expression?" He quickly smiled at what Lorence said after that. "Oh, and what makes you think you can afford my rates now? The tab you've worked up, Highgarden is going to be all but mine the moment you become the Ruling Lord and I call in your debts. Why I practically own the clothes you're wearing now. Maybe I should repossess them this very moment."
The Red Keep had gone from such a happy place, to lair of thick tension and mistrust. Tytos was also growing bored, and restless waiting for something to happen. He wanted peace, truly he did, he knew he was a tourney knight. If it came to actual war, he was certain he'd be useless. He was going for a walk around the Red Keep, trying to find the dragon skulls of old. When he instead found an old friend.
"Ceryse! What are you doing out here in the halls of the great red prison?" His smile was bright, she was after all the sister of his dearest companion in the whole world. They'd have grown up together. "I was off looking for the dragon skulls, you wouldn't happen to know where they are, would you?"
"lord lannister," steffon's brow furrowed at his brother's peculiar choice of greeting, though he didn't hesitate to use the same greeting in return. he opted to listen to all of what tytos had to say before even attempting a replying, though he quickly claim to regret the decision. "why do i get the feeling i should be asking you the same question?" he responded, this time with his eyebrow arched. "i sure hope no waynwoods have been offended," his voice lowered as he leaned closer to tytos. "do watch what you're saying, brother," he cautioned, "or you might find yourself confined to our quarters." a threat that steffon would make sure to honor.
Tytos smiled at his brother, suppressing a laugh. "I have been having a lovely evening, thank you for asking, brother." When he mentioned that he hoped no Waynwoods had been offended he shook his head a little. "Oh, no, no I was asking if you had done the offending. I haven't seen a Waynwood all night. I did however, see several Marbrands. They wanted to me to send well regards to you." When he was threatened to be locked in their rooms, he frowned. "Come now, that wouldn't be very brotherly of you, now would it? Besides you should know by now, father tried that many times on me, and I always found my way out, and when have you ever known me to watch waht I say? I think the Maesters regret helping me develop the power of speech."
leila gave him a feigned look of disapproval, a roll of her eyes and small scoff escaping her lips at his words. of course, he was the only one who she would let get away with speaking to her in such a way without much argument. hand went to place fingers upon the earring, trying to recall what she had chosen to wear for the evening.
"i'll save myself the pain and yield now." she taunted, a coy smile coming upon her face. the lioness tucked strands of golden curls behind her ear as she mirrored crossing her arms over her bodice now. "well, this evening certainly is something, don't you agree?"
"Good, you are wiser than most, sister. Many people have refused to yield, and learned all to well how painful I can be, though you no doubt know this having seen my many accomplishments in tourneys." He smiled at his sister especially when she mentioned the evening certainly being something. "You think it is something? Personally I've been growing more and more bored as the night as gone on. Why what have you been doing that makes things so interesting? Terrorizing children? Or old crones? Or the most obvious, you've been terrorizing both?"
lorence's eyes lit up as tytos approached, a hidden smile tugging at the corners of his lips. the pair had woven a delicate web of secrecy, concealing their love behind the mask of friendship. tytos's fingers brushed against one of his stray hairs, sending a shiver of anticipation down his spine. in that simple touch, they shared a language of love known only to them. amidst the revelry and deceit of the feast, their connection was a flame that burned brightly, casting a veil over the world that surrounded them.
lorence's gaze held a yearning, a desire to escape the political intricacies that entangled them. he longed for stolen moments in the comfort of their chambers, where they could bask in the warmth of each other's presence. he envisioned a stolen evening together, wrapped in tytos' arms, losing himself in the pages of a book with a cup of tea, pausing every so often to share plot updates with tytos. tytos was not much of a reader, but enjoyed when lorence read to him.
lorence's gaze darted briefly, his eyes scanning the room for prying eyes and listening ears. the weight of their secret burdened his shoulders, a constant reminder of the careful steps they must take to not reveal themselves. yet, amidst the grandeur and artifice, they found solace in stolen glances and subtle touches, their love an elusive flame that flickered in the shadows.
"blame the seductive allure of the arbor's finest golden brew, my love, for it seduces even the most noble hearts." he teased, his voice tinged with affection. it was a shared understanding, a quiet acknowledgment of their hidden desires amidst the facade they presented to the world. he turned to a servant who walked passed with goblets, reaching for one that looked like it was filled with water and handed it to tytos. "drink this. it'll help."
leaning in closer to tytos, lorence whispered with a playful hint in his voice, a secret shared softly. "i think i would take being a common flea bottom over my titles any day. the real question is would you still have me; if i was known as just peasant lorence, and not lord hightower?"
Tytos raised one of his eyebrows at Lorence, he was surprised at how bold the other was actually being. Perhaps he had finally started to rub off on him. As Tytos was nothing but bold always, he leaned in closer to Lorence, no doubt his breath smelled like the sweet wine mentioned, "Your love? Very brave of you to say that here. Almost as if you're begging me to kiss you right here, in front of everyone." When Lorence handed him the goblet, he took it, drinking the water. He felt like a child but knew better than to not listen to Lorence, less he wanted to hear his scoldings later.
Folding his arms over his chest when he was asked if he would still have Lorence, even if he was a commoner. "If that were the case, then I doubt we'd have ever even met. But if you were one of the common fisherman of Lannisport, or one of the men who worked the field, of course I'd still have you. What about you? If I was some mummer or Oldtown prostitute? Would you still have me?"
One of the biggest benefits that came from being raised at Highgarden meant that it was never odd when he spent more time with Lorence at feasts than with his own family. People knew they were good friends, many assuming their relationship was that of brothers then the truth of it. He finished his required duties, spoke with his siblings and now he found himself being drawn to Lorence.
His hands went instinctually to fix a fly away hair he had, before picking a hair that was resting on his shoulder off, and flicking it to the floor. "We can't have the future Lord Paramount of the Mander, Warden of the South, Defender of the Marches, High Marshall of the Reach and Lord of Highgarden looking like a common Flea Bottom peasant now can we?" Tytos quickly paused, a soft giggle leaving his lips. "I think I might be drunk, but it is entirely your fault for letting the Arbor produce such a good gold."
Tytos smiled when he saw his sister, and quickly moved into her personal space, his eyes scanning over what she was wearing in detail now that they weren't being forced to mingle and look at everyone else. His finger moving to her earring, he observed it.
"Is this one of mine?" Chuckling, he retracted his finger, folding his arms over his chest. "Or am I wearing one of yours? Regardless I think either of them would look better on me if we are being honest dear sister. Ask anyone here, I am quite sure they'd agree with me."
Tytos had always excelled in social situations, he enjoyed balls and feasts. He enjoyed them less than jousts and melees, but still enough that he would never complain about actually having to go to such an event. He was finishing a conversation with a lord of the Reach when he saw his brother Steffon. Smile on his face from cheek to cheek he finished his drink before slowly approaching him.
"Lord Lannister, are you enjoying yourself? Tell me, how much trouble have you landed us in since we dispersed into the crowd? Are we going to have to invade the Vale within a fortnight because of an offended Waynwood?" He chuckled a little, lightly smacking his brother's shoulder. "I think I've personally been rather charming all night, but I think I am about ready to go find a Hightower to climb." He mentioned the last part with a mischievous smirk on his face. Maybe he was being slightly bolder in his brother's presence because of the wine......but Tytos didn't care what his brother thought about his comments in the moment.
he made a mental note to speak to one of the gardeners later and have them answer his endless list of questions about the shrubs in front of him. but then, all at once, an earthy mixture of pine and musk filled his senses, causing his own heart to beat rapidly. lorence instantly recognized who that scent belonged to. all previous thoughts about the gardens were now lost. “why must your first thought always involve some sort of chaos?” he responded playfully.
he found himself instinctively leaning into tytos’ embrace, closing his eyes as a smile formed on his face. when he opens his eyes, he shifts himself slightly so that he can turn his head and gently press his lips to tytos’ cheek. “how long has it been this time?” he murmured, referring to how long since they had last saw each other. with tytos staying in highgarden as an official ward for house hightower, the two spent the adolescence years together, eventually falling for one another. they secretly remained together even when tytos eventually returned home to the rock.
the two remained intertwined for some time, taking advantage of having the garden to shield them away from any prying eyes. “what does your family think of the crown’s hope for peace with the north?” lorence wasn’t politically minded, but did find enjoyment out of hearing tytos’ perspective on the matter.
Tytos chuckled when he was accused of having chaos constantly on his mind. Lorence wasn't entirely wrong, he did enjoy causing mischief, he blamed it on the fact he was the youngest of four children. During their time together at Highgarden, he had always seemingly been dragging Lorence into trouble. Yet, it was also Tytos who talked them out of said trouble. His charm had always seemed a double edged blade. "Because I think this trip has been awfully boring so far, although my first thought was actually, my lover's backside looks incredibly good in these trousers."
He smiled humming as he held onto Lorence, just happy to have the other in his embrace once again. Smiling, he took in Lorence's all too familiar scent. His cheeks turned a light red when he felt the kiss against his cheek, "It's been, one year, and two and sixty days. The last time we saw each other was your father's nameday. If I recall it was a hunt, and we got lost in the woods for a night, because you swore you'd remember the way back after our tryst in that stream." His hands moved to Lorence's chest, cupping his pecs. "Not that I was keeping track, of course."
He chewed his lips when he was asked about the hopes of peace, shrugging his soldiers. "I don't know. I didn't ask my brother for his thoughts. I would assume we'd want peace, as peace has helped make us much richer." Pushing his nose against Lorence's, before he leaned in for a teasing kiss against his lips, before pulling away. "I don't care about that right now though. I missed my lover....I missed my friend....I missed you."
purposely rising before the morning’s rays overtook the night’s shadows, lorence hightower wandered aimlessly through the royal gardens; his hazel orbs darting back and forth between the stone path and ornate topiary. he took mental notes of everything, looking for inspiration for his eventual return to highgarden. he discreetly moved his gaze between the shrubs and the multiple exits. he had sent a note to tytos late last night informing of his plan to visit the gardens, hoping he would take the hint to join him.
he didn’t consider himself to be politically minded, much preferring to spend his time exploring the arts, and the history and culture of westeros, he was in high spirits at returning to the capital. while most houses were spending their time working on their official stance on the current peace talks, and even taking advantage of the uncertainty that comes from the death of the head of state to strengthen their position at court, lorence opted to leave that to his father. given how often the pair disagreed with one another, lorence figured it would be better if he let his father and his own lords to their devices.
he stopped walking to turn and look at a section of shrubs that appeared to be depicting a historical battle scene. “i wonder how long it takes to complete such a task.” he murmured to himself softly, unaware if someone was close enough to overhear him.
Tytos had been in the bath, soaking away the strains of traveling all the way from Casterly Rock to King's Landing, when he was walking back into his room, wrapping a robe around himself, he saw the note lying on his pillow. The handwriting all too familiar, it was Lorence who had mastered the art of writing in a way that made it easy for Tytos to read. The Lannister was illiterate.....but reading was a challenge for him. His parents had never seen the point in forcing him to struggle through it considering his natural gifts at the tourney lists. Better to hone what he was good at, then fix what he wasn't his father had always said.
So now he found himself awake early in the morning to meet his lover in a garden, he could hear Lorence talking to himself about the shrubs, shaking his head, Tytos moved silently behind the Hightower, and wrapping his arms around his waist pulled him against him. "How should I know? We don't even have shrubs at Casterly Rock." Smiling, he laughed as he pressed his nose against Lorence's neck. "Get me a match, love, and I could tell you how long it takes to ruin such a thing though. The Targaryens love fire and blood, I am certain they won't mind one lost shrub."
The dragon queen was dead. Now all of Westeros was gathering in King's Landing to discuss what would take place between the North and the South. The more pressing issue to Tytos right now were the apartments that the Targaryens had offered to the Lannisters. Surely they could have found better rooms to put them in. They were large, and spacious and he was certain most lords would not complain about them, but Tytos knew that there were better apartments somewhere in the Red Keep that they could have found for them. The attitude around the capital was incredibly gloomy, something else that was torturing Tytos, never one to enjoy when the atmosphere was down, he preferred when spirits were high. He was walking into the common room, when he found one of his older brothers.
"Steffon, please tell me your time so far hasn't been as torturous as my own. I am dying to find something to do to consume my time that doesn't involve talking about the passed Targaryen Queen."
