火 :: Although the wakizashi holds a preference of being a sword of few words, he is far from blissfully ignorant of those around him– Honebami is highly observant, all ears and eyes yet no mouth. Words would be wasteful when a blank slate such as him knows next to nothing about communication (particularly of the emotional type). Cold shoulders and absorbing the fluttery gossip of passersby suited his reticent lifestyle better. Much better.
Though that isn’t to say he’d break it once in a while.
“Ah…. yes, that’s me.” he answers softly, as if any further weight would crush the budding sprouts around them. A pause of movement is not spared; the silver haired boy continues work whilst conversing, lithe fingers cradling baby seedlings with bursts of featherweight touches. His hands have some sort of affinity for nature, you could say.
“You’re a f…. riend of Izumi’s, aren’t you?” The word is drawn out in a breath’s hesitation, an uneasy doubt having settled within his throat. “…. Kijinmaru Kunishige.” he adds.
“I’m surprised… you didn’t mix me up with my brother..”
The wakizashi’s voice is incredibly soft, and Kijinmaru finds that he had to strain his ears to clearly make out what he was saying. He doesn’t mind, though. It is a nice change of pace. Normally the other swords were so loud, so aggressive when they spoke. But here, in the middle of a silent field with only whispered words, Kijinmaru feelsmore at peace than he had in a while.
He blinks at Honebami’s words, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. “Aha...yes, I am. We used to battle side-by-side,” he explains. It seemed that was how everyone knew him - that one sword that is close to Izumi. It wasn’t surprising, though. He didn’t really talk to anyone, after all. Maybe he should try to be more approachable...
Kijinmaru can’t help but feel a bit proud at Honebami’s statement about him not mixing him up with his brother. Even though he doesn’t speak much, that doesn’t mean Kijinmaru doesn’t pay attention. And he certainly knew who these swords were.
“Ah...that’s right. Namazuo, correct? You two do look very alike!” He smiles a bit.

Hearing his friend say he wanted to be of use confused him. Well, truthfully, in the beginning, he did feel the same. After all, he was a blade – made to fight and all. Sitting still and being put on display didn’t suit him, especially him, considering his past, and it felt wrong. But now, he wondered, with bodies like these, couldn’t they enjoy life and not be of use like swords needed to be? Living like humans… would be difficult but… not impossible.
❝ Kijinmaru… ❞ For a moment, that’s all he can say. His mind blanks out and he doesn’t know how to form sentences or even think of letters that form words. But soon he regains himself and sighs, slowly starting to speak. ❝ … You’ve always been of use and you always will be, whether or not you’re fighting. After all, you do so much for everyone, for me, even without slicing enemies. A-And your worth isn’t based on your usefulness… I hope you aren’t worried about that like Kashu. ❞
This is fucking difficult.
Sighing, he raises a hand to comb through his hair, twisting and twirling it, wondering how to go forward and express himself completely without fault. And trust him, that was no easy feat for the sword of the awkward demon commander.
❝ This is hard… But… you’re pretty useful just being at my side. If you’re not there, things feel wrong… So just doing that is good too. Besides, ❞ He holds out his pinky and smiles, ❝ I’m kind of worried about all of you fighting again. I don’t want you or any of the others to get hurt and disappear. I’m sure you understand how I feel, right? So… let’s promise to stay together this time. ❞
His smile widens, ❝ And I believe you. It will be fine. Because we’re together again… Yoshiyuki included. And I’ll hold you to your word on him. Let’s help the Sage and all but… let’s also carve our own paths that we want to live from now on… Okay, Kijin? ❞
Kijinmaru was just a weapon.
That’s...what he had always been told. Metal has no need for emotions, after all. Even if he had found comfort among the Shinsengumi, his sole purpose was to cut down whatever stood in his master’s way.
Even now, with this new body, that duty has not changed. How could it? That was the only reason he was forged - to be of use to whoever wielded him. That was all he was meant to do...right?
Or was that wrong...?
Kijinmaru can’t help but fall silent as Izumi speaks. The tachi appears to be struggling for the right words, his hand nervously playing with his long hair. But what he says is exactly what Kijinmaru needs to hear.
“My worth...isn’t based on how useful I am?” he repeats incredulously. But how could that be? I’m just a sword. He wants to speak those words aloud, but they die in his throat. Izumi...Izumi needed him. The other swords needed him.
Maybe Izumi is right. Maybe they finally have a choice. Maybe they can do more than just fulfill their duty as swords.
Kijinmaru smiles despite the water slowly clouding his eyes. “Yeah...you’re right, Izumi,” he sniffs. “Now I’m...we can make our own paths. I-If that’s okay...” He quickly rubs away any tears with his hand. “...And I’ll be sure to look after you. Who knows what trouble you’ll get in without me stopping you.”
He holds out his pinky in return, wrapping it around Izumi’s. “...Let’s do this together. Okay..?”

❝ Bahhh, you’re such a pushover, Kijinmaru. You have to at least flirt. Otherwise you’re gonna be stuck in the grey forever until you both move on and then confess years later when you’re both married to other people and have awkward unresolved romantic tension. I’m just sayin’! How can you be sure without even trying? You won’t be bothering him, I’m sure. ❞ Tsukiyomi rolls his eyes and wishes he could collapse onto a couch dramatically right now to emphasize his mood.
He then raises his hands and shrugs, ❝ Besides, let’s say he doesn’t feel the same – which is fucking impossible but whatever – what makes you think Izumi wouldn’t just move forward and still stick with you? Our commander isn’t gonna bite your head off for thirstin’ for his ass. You’re his best friend, after all. He’s always watching you and looking for you, just as much as you do for him and if you think none of us have noticed that you do that Kijinmaru you are sooooo wrong. You and Horikawa are like the thirstiest people in our group and it’s for the same guy. ❞
It’s time to mock the poor blade further.
Mimicking Kijinmaru’s usual stony expression, he stands there before lighting up and looking as if he’s just seen Heaven on Earth. ❝ Izumiiiii! Hello! Do you need anything? I’d be happy to be of help… Anything you need! I’ll do anything for you! Ahh, Izumi, let’s go on a walk together! Izumi, can I help you work? Izumi, are you making dinner? I’ll help! Let’s train together, Izumi! Izumi, I made you a snack! Izumiii~ ❞
He stops now and smirks, snickering faintly. ❝ You always sound like a lovestruck school girl looking at the most popular guy she’s head over heels for. And only Izumi himself is dumb enough to not notice. I’m surprised you just don’t sneak kisses in and try to sleep in the same bed and stuff and that’s only because you’re not bold enough to do it. Anyways, I won’t stop teasing you until you make this happen and even then I’ll find a way to tease you two as a couple if you get that far. ❞
❝ Fufu, teasing is just in my nature, my dear friend~ ❞
Kijinmaru cheeks only burn an even brighter red as Tsukiyomi speaks, and for a moment he wishes he could just fall into the ground and never return. How embarrassing! And, worst of all, everyone else apparently noticed it...
Everyone except Izumi, it seems.
“I do try to flirt...a bit,” Kijinmaru replies quietly. “I always try to tell him how much he means to me, but I don’t think he notices.” He stares nervously at the ground, fumbling a bit with his fingers. “...You’re right...Even if he doesn’t feel the same, I doubt he would ever completely leave me.” They both had been through so much together, so even if a confession went awry, well...well, they probably wouldn’t break apart despite it.
Kijinmaru flinches as the yari continues to mercilessly tease him, mimicking his voice and actions. D-Does he really sound like that?! “S-Stop, Tsukiyomi!” Kijinmaru begs, waving his hands before his face in mock defeat. “I get it, okay!” He hangs his head in embarrassment, not daring to meet the yari’s eyes. “I...I can’t help it. He just makes me happy, you know?”
But maybe...maybe Tsukiyomi has a point.
“Well...like you said, I suppose I’m just not forward enough. Do you think I...I just need to be more bold? Would that actually work?”
He certainly hopes so. There’s no way he’s going to lose to Horikawa.

Izumi had told him a bit about an interesting pair of swords in the camp. Two wakizashis, to be exact. According to Izumi they were nearly inseparable, fighting and working side-by-side. Kijinmaru found that interesting, he supposed. Not that he would actively seek them out to make friends, but at least he had an inkling of who they were.
But then chores happen.
It was Kijinmaru’s turn to tend to the fields, not that he minded all that much, and he was helping another sword to pick out weeds and hoe the soft soil. He had never met this sword before, but he seemed familiar somehow...a short figure with shockingly white hair.
Ah...Izumi had mentioned this blade before hadn’t he?
Kijinmaru paused in the middle of his work, balancing his weight on the hoe he was holding.
“Pardon me...but you wouldn’t happen to be Honebami Toushirou, would you?”
stop teasing me!

❝ Are you sure? I was sooo certain you were trying to make Kanesada yours no matter what you have to do, you know? But I guess you’re not that into him or dedicated… How boring! C’mon, I wanna cheer for you, not Horikawa~ ❞ The yari sighs, pressing a hand to his cheek as he pouts and waves his free hand at Kijinmaru, ❝ If you want the guy, you gotta get out there and win him over! But I guess since you’re so shy and stuff it’s hard, hm…~? ❞
❝ Hmhm~ I think it’s very funny, Kijinmaru. You’re so stiff it’s so much fun to tease you. ❞
Now this is an embarrassing topic...!
Kijinmaru’s cheeks turns a light red, and he looks away from the yari with a huff. He did...like Izumi a lot, yes, but... “I couldn’t possibly chase him or try to win him over or anything like that,” he sighs. “I...I certainly do like him a lot, but I can never be sure he feels the same. And if he doesn’t, I don’t want to bother him, of course.”
It was exactly as Tsukiyumi said, he supposes. He’s simply too shy.
“Be that as it may, I would still appreciate it if you didn’t tease me so much...”

❝ Yes, they’re all there! Mm, well, some… We’re still looking for a few… ❞ Izumi goes on, smiling apologetically. He hopes to find the rest of the Shinsengumi weapons as soon as possible, he wants nothing more than for the group to be together again.
❝ But you are right, it’ll be just like home. Or as close to home as it can get… And that… ❞ He trails off, his smile taking a bittersweet, nostalgic tinge to it. He shifts his gaze from Kijinmaru to look out at the vast fields of Hakodate and sighs before shaking his head and turning back to his friend.
He doesn’t hear the last bit his friend whispers, merely responding to the first portion, unaware to the romantic feelings of not only Kijinmaru, but of any directed towards him, for he is Hijikata Toshizo’s, the famously attractive yet horribly inexperienced romantic samurai’s, blade! ❝ I’m sure they all will be happy to see you too, Kijinmaru. ❞
❝ Anyway, you woke up pretty peacefully, huh? That’s good… but, uh, we’re here for a reason. And that’s to help the Saniwa Sage make sure history isn’t altered. You’ll help too, right? I’d get if you don’t want to, though. I mean, ❞
He sighs and pouts a little, ❝ do you remember Mutsunokami? Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki. He’s with us now too. And, well, I mean… I don’t hate him… but… I just shut down around him… I wonder if you’ll be the same… Shit! I’m rambling. Damn. This won’t make much sense, huh? You might as well just ask Kunihiro to explain to you when we get home, he’s better at it than me… ❞
It was difficult to believe. For a few minutes Kijinmaru can only watch, perplexed, as Izumi continues to speak about meeting up once more with old friends. How...is this possible? Is it truly magic? Is this all the fault of the sage Izumi had mentioned?
Kijinmaru silently follows Izumi’s gaze, taking in the view. The field seems so peaceful now. It is hard to imagine such a bloody and violent battle had occurred here when everything felt so calm. ...Yet when Kijinmaru closed his eyes, he could see it all as plain as day The green grass dyed crimson with blood, the swords around him lied shattered all about the ground...Kijinmaru had made sure to commit it to memory. It was the least he could do as a survivor.
But now...it feels different. For once this place is not a land of death...but, rather, one of rebirth.
If Kijinmaru has to describe it, he will say it feels like a new beginning.
The sword tilts his head as Izumi continues to explain their duty, frantically adding that their other friend Mustsunokkami Yoshiyuki is even in the company of this so-called Saniwa Sage. Kijinmaru can’t help but grin, laughing quietly. “Don’t worry, Izumi, I will gladly help you. I want to see everyone again, and...” He pauses for a moment, gathering his thoughts. “...I want to be of use once more.”
“...And I’ll help you deal with Yoshiyuki, too,” he adds with a laugh. “It will be fine, Izumi.”

♛: Sharing a dessert
Izumi said this was supposed to be good and that Kijinmaru, even with his lack of a sweet tooth would enjoy it. ...Hopefully he had been telling the truth.
“So...this is green tea ice cream?” Kijinmaru muses, glancing down at the cup lying on the floor between both swords. He could recall seeing it many, many years ago, but he had never bothered to try it. It looks...interesting.
“You bet!” Izumi grins, picking up the cup gleefully. He pulls out one of the wooden spoons sticking from the dessert, waving it around a bit as he continues. “I know you don’t like sweets, but I promise you’ll like this! Okay? Can you trust me?”
Kijinmaru hesitates for a moment, staring straight forward at the green dessert before him. Finally, he smiles. “...Of course I can. I’ll always trust you, Izumi!”
“Good!” Izumi chimes in reply. “Now open your mouth!”
“E-Eh?”
“Open your mouth!”
Much too startled to argue back, Kijinmaru promptly obeys, opening his mouth and allowing Izumi to feed him the spoonful of ice cream he is holding.
E-Ehhh??
Kijinmaru’s cheeks quickly flare up into a scarlet hue and he swallows the dessert before covering his face with his hands.
Izumi blinks. “Hm? Is something wrong? Do you not like it?”
The other sword shakes his head furiously, his hands remaining firmly over his face. “N-No, I loved it! It...it was really good,” he admits, his voice soft.
“Not too sweet?” Izumi asks.
“No...not at all,” Kijinmaru sighs.
You’re the sweet one, Izumi...You’ll be the death of me!

❝ I’m suuuper resilient, just like Haradaaa~ ❞ Tsukiyomi muses, his words not really a reply so much as just talking to fill the silence. ❝ I’ve been doing very well, though. Thank you~! I worked really hard to not die, y’know? ❞ His words, while dark, are said with the brightest and joyous of smiles. He truly was an odd one.
Internally, upon seeing Kijinmaru’s reaction, the yari breaks out in a fit of laughter. However, externally, he merely gives a soft chuckle and wags a finger at him, ❝ Is that so? What a bummer~ Oh, but I guess this is still fun. I’ll get to watch you try and seduce him. ❞
His hands cup his cheeks as a smirk settles onto his lips, his uncovered eye glimmering with mischievous intent as he looks at his friend. ❝ Kijinmaru, you’re so naughty~ What’re you gonna do to woo your beloved I~zu~mi~? Welcome him home with dinner and ask him if he wants his dinner, a bath, or maaaybe… yourself? Or all at once?! You’re very daring, you know! Ahhh, but I applaud you and I’ll cheer you on! Let me know if you need help~ ❞
“Ah, well...I’m glad you worked so hard,” Kijinmaru replies, not exactly sure how else to respond. Tsukiyomi always was an odd sword. Not that that was always a bad thing, but it made it difficult for the already awkward Kijinmaru to carry a conversation all the time.
But this isn’t really a conversation...it is mostly the yari poking fun at poor Kijinmaru. And it’s working extremely well.
“S-Seduce him...?! That’s not what I’m trying to do...” R-Right? After all, Kijinmaru did love Izumi (who would’ve guessed!) but he can hardly imagine himself putting himself out there like that! “I-I-I certainly won’t be offering myself!” he cries, his cheeks puffing in indignation. “Tsukiyomi, this isn’t funny! If this is your idea of helping, well, it’s not helping very much!”

❝ Hmm, well… Everyone appears differently. We found Nagasone since he’d gotten captured, just like old times… but Kashu was summoned by the Sage first thing. They later found or forged Yamato, myself, and Horikawa… Basically, it’s okay if you don’t know. ❞ Izumi reaches out to pat Kijinmaru’s head comfortingly, giving a small smile, ❝ Besides! You look so peaceful when you sleep, like a little kitten~ Oh but I’m sorry for waking you up! But we can nap together at the base, okay? If you want to, that is. To make up for waking you. ❞
His fingers comb through his friend’s hair for a bit longer before he pulls his hand away to, instead, take Kijinmaru’s hand within his own. ❝ Let’s go there now! It’s much safer there and I already got separated from my group, so it’s fine if I go back now. More stuff will make sense then, I think. Because the Sages can tell you what’s going on. ❞
❝ Hm~ I bet the others will be happy to see you too! Are you excited? There’s also more of us, swords that don’t even belong to the Shinsengumi. My brother’s there! And so are Horikawa’s brothers and Nagasone’s brothers… It’s really packed! So it’s a lot like home. Remember? How packed the Kyoto base got so we had to move? ❞
E-Eh...this is all going much too fast. But Kijinmaru supposes that’s just Izumi. Once he’s excited he just goes on and on and on...not that Kijinmaru minds. It’s nice to hear him again. ...He really missed his voice.
Kijinmaru’s eyes widen at Izumi’s list of names. “They...they’re all here, too?” he stammers. So...he will be able to see his friends again? After all these years? He opens his mouth to speak more, but is abruptly cut off by Izumi patting his head.
Kijinmaru freezes for a moment, the smallest trace of a smile touching his lips. Right...he doesn’t know why he is here, nor how he got here. And truthfully he doesn’t understand anything Izumi is saying at the moment. But...his touch makes it all okay.
It’s okay that Kijinmaru doesn’t understand just yet. He will...and he has Izumi.
Izumi then pulls away, much too Kijinmaru’s disappointment, but promptly takes Kijinmaru’s hand in his own, that all too familiar, warm grin stretched across his face. So, Izumi was with others...that was good, thank goodness he wasn’t lonely. Hopefully these other swords could clear things up for Kijinmaru, as well.
Kijinmaru squeezes Izumi’s hand and smiles. He sounds so excited...”It will be just like home,” he agrees. “I can’t wait to see everyone again.” He chuckles, squeezing Izumi’s hand once more. “...I’m just so happy to have you back, too,” he adds softly, his cheeks turning the slightest shade of red in embarrassment.
There are so many of them.
Swords, that is.
Some are ones Kijinmaru knows all too well; they had belonged to fellow Shinsengumi masters, after all, so he can recall working side-by-side with them. He can remember it like it was just yesterday, in fact...how could hundreds of years possibly have passed?
Others swords are some he has never seen before, but he knows them by name. They are quite famous and to see them all in one place...Kijinmaru would have been lying if he said he isn’t somewhat starstruck.
Then of course there are the swords he has never seen before. ...He doesn’t know what to think of them.
But they all seem so happy. They are an eclectic group, to be sure, but they seem to be getting along like a family. But therein lies the problem.
Kijinmaru sighs and rests his chin on his knees, pulling his legs close to his body.
He doesn’t know how to strike up a conversation with any of them.
“...Just say hello,” he huffs under his breath. “It’s easy....”
