I believe the laureate receives a monetary award as well. As far as I know this case has already been widely publicised, I first came to know about it through my local news. I have seen a lot of men and (sadly) women criticising her pain but as she perfectly put it into words, shame must change sides. She has nothing to hide and much to be recognised and applauded for.

It's not "the male gene" that causes colorblindness. SRY, which triggers male sexual development, has nothing to do with colorblindness. It's a condition relating to the X chromosome. The reason males experience these disorders with such regularity is that they only have one X chromosome. Women, on the other hand, must have these disorders present on both X chromosomes for them to present - which is far less likely. The Y chromosome does not have much in the way of genetic material, comparably. They're basically just one X and some half-baked stuff that makes them good at providing and protecting genetic diversity in the species, which is their actual purpose in existing at all.

One could even say that this deficiency of a second X chromosome means that they were aborted at the gene stage.
