GIRLS Location Scout

Finding the perfect new home for Hannah meant looking for something completely different. “This was an empty place that had the right look. It was far away from what Hannah is used to,” shared GIRLS location manager Suk Yi Mar. “It was just a great house with a lot of texture. We ended up dressing up the entire house from scratch and turning one room into a bathroom. That was probably one of the best locations because it was very peaceful. There were chickens running around. It was just nice to be there."

“When we started working on Girls six years ago, Lena Dunham, being a huge fan of Tracy Chapman, asked about using [the song] ‘Fast Car.’ We had to break the news to her that it was 100% off limits -- because Chapman hadn’t allowed the song to be licensed in the past. Fast forward to the series finale, we all agreed that, if ever there was a moment to ask Chapman for her song, this would be the right time. Nina Cosford’s GIRLS Illustrated

“I will miss following the characters in GIRLS and drawing their moments and mishaps. But no one stays in their twenties forever, and as sad as I am that the show is ending, it feels right that things are starting to round off and the characters are falling on their feet.

[This] group shot of all four girls was a sort of homage to the first GIRLS Illustrated piece I made. Episode 9 is the first (and last) time Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna appear together in Season 6. When crafting their looks, GIRLS costume designer Jenn Rogien says, “For the first time, their individual looks were more important to me than creating harmony between the four of them.” Above all else, “It was important that each girl’s looks is quintessentially her own.” As Rogien describes it: “Shosh is in this very current, fashion conscious dress. It’s the thing you’re supposed to wear to your engagement party. Hannah shows up in the thing you’re absolutely not supposed to show up in, which is your maternity overalls and keds. Marnie is in one of her classic long maxi dresses. And Jessa is in her ‘I don’t give a f**k’ look that’s still this great ‘90s dress.” The differences in clothing choice is meant to reflect the sad state of their friendship. Rogien explains, “The outfits do work as a foursome, but there’s also tension in the way they all look together. They are clashing.”

“I think it’s pretty obvious where Jessa is emotionally,” says GIRLS costume designer Jenn Rogien of Jessa’s strut down the street in a fuzzy bikini top. The bikini itself was difficult to come by. It was scripted as angora, but as it turns out [actor] Jemima Kirke is allergic to angora. Rogien sourced the top that made it on screen from a “rave shop” online: “When it came in the mail, I was like, ‘Oh god, this thing is not at all like the photo.’ It was ugly. And of course it ended up being the perfect thing, because it describes where Jessa is in that moment.”

GIRLS Location Scout

Crest Hardware, the sight of Adam and Hannah’s baby-proofing shopping spree, isn’t your ordinary hardware shop: "Apparently it’s a famous for having a pig living in the back where there is a big nursery for flowers and stuff,” shared GIRLS location manager Suk Yi Mar. Sadly, the pig wasn’t there, at the time of filming. “I think they sent it to a farm because it was summer time."

"We filmed there during Seasons 1 and 2, but couldn’t go back after because there was too much filming [in that location]. For following seasons we actually had to cheat another building in Brooklyn to match that building. Because this was the last season, I went to the mayor’s office to ask if we could go back just for one night. We wanted to match the scene with Adam and Hannah from Season 1, so it was important to go back to that same building." -Suk Yi Mar, GIRLS Location Manager

"It was beautiful shooting that night because they’re not usually open [at that time] and it was nice seeing the skyline with the bridge in the background. Plus, we actually met Jane. She was one that refurbished the horses that were there...There is a wideshot where people are riding around the carousal and we have her sitting there with her husband." -Suk Yi Mar, Location Manager

GIRLS Style

The seventh episode of Season 6 features the first of Hannah’s “maternity looks.” For costume designer Jenn Rogien, the outfit is “designed to be an ‘Okay, this is going to happen’ moment.” When it came to determining Hannah’s pregnancy look, Rogien explains, “It seemed very practical that Hannah would find things in her closet that would suit her circumstances.” Dressing a pregnant Hannah was less about sourcing maternity wear and more about figuring out clothing already in the wardrobe that could fit a fake belly!

"The pawn shop was this store in Midtown called Jean Silversmiths. It’s actually a silversmith store. It’s has really tight corridors, and was very narrow and deep. But [director] Richard Shepard liked it because it had a lot of texture." - Suk Yi Mar, GIRLS Location Manager
