Letter from alpha hair salon #2! They’re starting to be my veritable pen pals by now. Actually, I think they just have a policy of mailing endearing notes to all their customers. Anyway! It doesn’t matter because I get to practice my mad Japanese reading skillz. I’m not competent at Japanese by any means but they wrote it simply enough that I think I can translate without too many egregious errors.
“Rebecca-san, Hello! Thanks for coming to the store the other day! It was the first time you let me cut your hair … How about later on (too)? If anytime you’re in the mood, please give us a call, ok? It’s really too bad that you’re returning to Canada this July :( Bring back lots of memories of Japan. If it’s all right with you, please come back for another cut before you leave! I’m looking forward to seeing you again.”
ねこあつめ ("Cat Gathering") My latest phone app. It's about collecting cats. It's like Japan KNOWS me.
It's been solidly into the high twenties for a couple weeks now. Which means it's picnic season in Kairakuen Koen!
The crappiest photos of one of the most beautiful festivals I've been to -- dedicated to yaezakura, or "double layer cherry blossoms". The lanterns at night were to die for.
Kasama Inari Shrine, where there is a 400 year-old wisteria currently in full bloom.
Japan Beach Jam in Makuhari, Chiba
Nemophila and tulips at my favourite park, Hitachinaka Kaihinkoen. People from all over Japan come to see the field of blue nemophila flowers every spring!
Yes, I wear the stupid masks when I'm sick.
Cherry blossom festival in Mito! There were SO MANY food stalls selling booze, candy apples, fried noodles, chicken, squid, and tons more. Plus there was outdoor karaoke and live shows on stage in front of the shrine. Sorry for the crappy photos, but it was actually really nice. The love for cherry blossoms is real here!
Yabusame (horse-back archery) festival! See the procession? Originally it was just the year's "princess" on horseback, plus a bunch of workers and government officials. But since we were standing around in a big group and obviously foreign, we all got invited to walk in the procession, too! We went up and down a few times, then went at a brisk run, and I high-fived like a million impossibly adorable children and one of them gave me candy.
Spring time in Japan! April, 2015
I've neglected this blog for two months so now I'm just gonna throw some pictures up on it and hope you get the gist
:)
New teachers, new school year, new lessons, new dramas. I think I'm going clinically insane. On the plus side, I can now stare at the new beau-sensei who just arrived out of the corner of my eye and then I feel like all is right with the world.
Spent last weekend at the Haneda airport listening to some sweet music and looking at some awesome costumes! Cassi and Emily dressed up as Gon and Killua from Hunter x Hunter and I stupidly didn’t get a picture of them. Just imagine two adorable people dressed as two adorable cartoon characters and you’ll probably be pretty close though!
My friend Rachel introduced me to a new conveyor belt sushi bar where they serve cheeseburger sushi!! It was actually not bad, all things considered.
Hi, for some reason I can’t message you privately, but I had a few questions! I’m going to Japan next month and I’m looking for destination ideas as well as restaurant suggestions. Be great if we could talk. Thanks!
Hey! Sorry I missed your message for so long! I’m glad you’re visiting Japan -- I think you’ll really like it here :)
Honestly I’m ancient and I don’t really know how to tumblr and so my ask box was closed up until now. If you still want some recs, try my ask again! Thanks!
I got these from two of my male students during Valentine’s Day at my International Club! I almost flipped a lid because they’re so adorable. Also notice the one kid’s kick-ass handwriting. It’s a bit hard to see the top one’s handwriting in the photo but here’s what it says — Happy Valentine’s Day Rebecca! I hope you work at this school for a long time! And I love you! My heart!! These kids!! It’s too much!! (Edit: reposted in the interest of confidentiality. When you're trained in the medical field, you can never be too careful!)
