26 Sept Update

The letter is gaining some momentum, but we need to keep pressure up. Link to tweet ; if there are twitter users with a lot of followers who have been vocal on matters of racial justice/sports/the protests, kindly ask them if they could re-tweet the letter. Joe Manganiello & Michael Keaton are two prominent and vocal Pens fans - @ them to get them on board.

If you can, please also mail copies. I’ve also sent it to other players, with a note telling them how this relates to them also, even if it’s an open letter to Sid.

Feel free to also send it to news agencies you think might carry it, especially in Pittsburgh, Nova Scotia/Cole Harbour [and of course online].

Andi Perelman, director of new media at the Pens tweeted: “Re: White House tweets I see the disappointment, pride, disbelief, and praise. I’m reading it all. And I’m passing along everything.” Let’s make sure they are seeing more disappointment, disbelief, and anger than praise/pride.

The petition now has almost 17, 000 signatures! Keep at it!

And call, call, call. I know it’s hard to call (i hate it), but if you can, please do.

Update, 27 September

Mike Sullivan’s statement this morning is *so awful* I’m horrified. Summary: “a) U are wrong to think this is a stand; this isn’t Sid’s burden; we deserve respect; I don’t want to talk about this anymore”

Former Halifax poet laureate El Jones had scathing comments re Sid’s behaviour here, said he has greatly disapppointed black Nova Scotians and it’s an act of moral cowardice ; Pittsburgh Mayor said he is turning down invite to join the Pens at the White House.

Also - this whole idea that it’s ‘tradition’ is B.S. In 100 yr history of NHL, only 22 visits have been made. Call them on their b.s.

JT Brown & Josh Ho Sang have made statements supporting protests - Ryan Reaves and Trevor Daley said some variations of it. BUT the burden is on white players ; JT has already received death threats for his comments. Please put pressure on white players in AND out of the Pens ; this is bigger than the WH visit, they need to step up.

Update, 28 September:

1. Things continue to be horrible. Heh. While Joel Ward and Wayne Simmonds have come out with statements emphasizing WHAT these protests are about, white players continue to be gross. Phil Kessel commented that they ‘didn’t care and weren’t even talking about it’. I’m so mad I can’t even speak more about that dismissive awful comment right now.

2. SOMEONE CREATED A POSTCARD WE CAN PRINT AND SEND! LINK Please share it!

3. I think I left out Mario’s contact info, here’s his foundation. Hound him.

4. GMJR and the rest of the higher ups too!- but I dont have contact info for them.

5. Here’s an FB post someone else asked to share - signal boost, please share and tag if you’re on FB

6. I’m conscious that it’s mostly women (and maybe other minorities) who have to deal with all these messages that are really targetted at white men in their organisation. I wrote a thank you note for twitter, but feel free to use it otherwise too.

7. Keep our actions Visible, not just in our own fandom spaces. So tag, call, show up if u can, send letters and postcards. Do what you can with what you have.

Friends, I know many are angry, frustrated, sad, disappointed. I am too. It’s so gross watching the white male Pittsburgh reporters in full force essentially saying none of these guys need to care about social justice. (one guy almost literally said that). Mark Madden has been *awful* and abusive on twitter too.

Like I said before, this is bigger than the WH. I’m SO encouraged by all the conversations happening, people who’ve sent messages saying they never felt brave enough to call or write before now doing so because they are emboldened by our collective actions. If all our actions get more people thinking, talking, working to change the culture, then regardless what happens on October 10 (the White House visit day), these are important wins.

“Update” : 4th October

Six days before they leave. I was thinking yesterday about Trump’s hands on the Stanley Cup; not the first time the hands of a sexist, racist, misogynistic, white supremacist, sex predator has touched it I’m sure, but the deliverance of it in the face of how defiantly he is all of that publicly makes my skin crawl.

I know a lot of this has quietened down; I’ve posted a few times since this last post updated (some immediately relevant ones: x ; x ; x ; x) ; but I want to say that not everyone has given up; we realise this is bigger than the White House visit. We are fighting to make sure the door doesn’t shut again, that the NHL’s racism skeletons don’t get stuffed back into the closet. Let’s keep doing what we can with what we have.

Also - find your spaces of community. To grieve, to share, to cry, to create.

Be loving, rest, power on. You are not alone.
